When there is something happening in a child’s life and we want to protect them, our adult tendency is to smooth things over as quickly as possible, minimize things, and in essence, lie to them. Perhaps someone is drunk and sleeping it off on the couch, yet we might say "Oh, they are tired and sleeping late.” What we are telling the kid is, “I will determine your reality so do not trust your instincts.” We set them up to trust external information rather than internal instincts. This episode explores how to use the 4 R’s, Reflect, Redirect, Reassure and Repeat, when explaining difficult subjects to children.
