Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation have officially greenlit a second live-action , scheduling it for release on June 24, 2027.

This film will be a sequel to the first live-action adaptation (which is a remake of the first animated film), currently in production and set to release on June 13, 2025.

Dean DeBlois, the writer and director of the original animated trilogy, is returning to write, direct, and produce both the first live-action film and this newly announced sequel. It is expected that this second live-action movie will adapt the storyline of the animated How to Train Your Dragon 2.

The first film stars Mason Thames as Hiccup, Nico Parker as Astrid, and features Gerard Butler reprising his voice role as Stoick the Vast in live-action. The confirmation of the sequel indicates the studios have confidence in the franchise's live-action potential even before the first film's release.
