The U.S. government shutdown is now official, after Congress failed to pass its latest spending bill. Only essential services will continue until Congress can agree on a new bill. In the meantime, President Donald Trump has announced he plans to use the shutdown as an opportunity to cut government spending and shrink the federal workforce.
