Today I’m starting off talking about Will Smith’s career and the interesting space it’s come to and how he is being phased out. However, the decision to start an Instagram account was such a smart move on his part. I haven’t encountered an instagram feed in a while that is so full of life, energy, and ‘super-stardom’. It has allowed him to connect to this new audience and new generation in a way that helps him relate to current culture.
The biggest lesson we can pull from Will Smith is when you are tackling a new platform to try and be more relevant, don’t try to be like everyone else!
Can target markets be racist? In this day and age, a lot of businesses are being called into question for targeting a certain group of people. Here’s my take on it: serve who you feel you are meant to serve. I’ve got some thoughts on what I think the real issue is and how you can adjust your business and marketing accordingly.
If you know that a specific type of advice you have is only for a specific type of person, it may be time to expand your advice to serve more people. It’s also not about who you want to serve but what set of problems you want to solve. There is a wide variety of people who may have these problems and that is your target market.

One of the most fascinating parts of ‘Stranger Things’ to me was watching it’s meteoric rise. Netflix has very limited advertising and relies on word of mouth. They knew they had a good product, so they just put it out there and waited for it to grow. How can we use this example of what to do in our business? A lot of it is about being really good at what you do and really clear in your messaging and waiting for the word to get out about you.
If you don’t want to spend a lot of money and advertising time, you can just make sure you are very clear in your messaging and are doing great work for the clients you have. When you have happy clients who find your product easy to talk about and explain, you can ask them to spread the word.
Are you fighting to stay relevant in your industry? Are you still the ‘go to person’ for what you do? I’m using Keanu Reeves as an example today as we talk about how to stick around as a business owner and how to make your work specific enough to keep your audience coming back to you. I’m sharing my brand strength and how I dig deeper into that instead of trying to expand what I do.What is that thing that makes you special? I’m also answering the question of the week!
Are you someone who asks for the trade before asking for the sale? Are you wondering why the money might not be coming in? I take a no-bullshit approach to money mindset in this week's How's Business Going!
In this week's Brand Is The New Black, Shenee talks about the importance of introducing yourself to your audience the right way by looking at character introductions from some of your favorite movies!
