  • 66 - Geriatric Millennials and HR Influencer Lists

On episode 66 of The HR Famous Podcast, long-time HR leaders (and friends) Tim Sackett, Kris Dunn and Jessica Lee  come together to discuss the Top 100 HR Tech Influencers of 2021 and whether geriatric millennials are coming to save the world or not!

Listen below (click this link if you don’t see the player) and be sure to subscribe, rate, and review (Apple Podcasts) and follow (Spotify)!

    SHOW HIGHLIGHTS:

1:00 - JLee is in the DC metro area and is currently being overrun by cicadas!

3:00 - JLee, Tim, and KD were all named one of the top 100 HR Tech influencers of 2021! Our podcast has influence!

6:30 - Tim is getting reached out by not so reputable HR tech companies to be on their “top 10 lists” but he only wants to be on the robust, well-researched lists.

9:45 - JLee doesn’t know if any of the other hundreds of other HR employees at her company know about her being on this list. She asks the crew the question “does this event matter?”. Tim thinks it’s great for the speaker bio.

15:00 - JLee hasn’t been on lists for awhile but she’s back since starting HR Famous and starting back on the conference circuit. She says that getting back out there has helped her open her eyes and see what else is going on in the world.

18:00 - KD says that he may not get more business from being on this list but he’s at the company he’s at now because of being out there in the HR space.  HIs last 2 career opportunities have come from being more active than normal in the HR space.  He also considers the HR Tech/HR Executive Magazine list to be the gold standard.

19:45 - An article has been going around JLee’s office and it’s about “geriatric millennials' ' and their eagerness to go into a world of hybrid work.

21:00 - What’s a geriatric millennial? They were not digital natives and remember a time before cell phones and other technological advancements. JLee is the resident geriatric millennial of the pod.

23:45 - Geriatric millennials have the ability to go between the online and offline world where older and younger generations may struggle at being online/offline. Also, they have had to learn how to adapt to different digital technologies quickly.

30:00 - KD calls BS on the concept that everyone in a generational slice is going to have impact in the world, noting that high performers throughout time in the 35-40 range are always "next up" in the world of work. But not everyone within a certain age group is going to save the world. There will always be high potential earners in every group, and they’ll rise to create change.

  • 65 - When Execs Share Leadership Clickbait With The Team

On episode 65 of The HR Famous Podcast, long-time HR leaders (and friends) Tim Sackett, Kris Dunn and Jessica Lee come together to discuss electric vehicles, leadership porn, and ride sharing companies ramping up signing bonuses for drivers due to wait times and fares being up significantly.

Listen below and be sure to subscribe, rate, and review (iTunes) and follow (Spotify)!

3:00 - KD asks JLee what the first electronic vehicle (EV) she’ll own will be. JLee’s husband wants the Tesla Model Y. Tim wants the Hummer EV Edition 1 but he might have to get it used.

8:00 - First topic: CEO and leadership clickbait! All HR people have seen a leader that will create a big email thread about an article they’ve become obsessed with.

10:00 - This is the CNBC article about 5 quick tests to hiring. Some of these tests include the “good person”, “energy”, and “another offer” test.  KD thinks it's a hoot and representative of everything that's wrong with leadership content.

12:30 - Tim thinks that Reffkin sounds like he’s trying to hire a grandmother with some of his rules. Do we really want everyone to live by the golden rule? And how do you freaking figure THAT out in an interview process.

14:30 - Reffkin discusses in the article how the term “culture fit” can be a disguise for discrimination, then proceeds to add ways he can hire who he wants with his own, made up principles.

18:00 - KD says the problem with “leadership porn” is when it gets passed down to the masses that don’t maybe have the experience or expertise to critically look at the lessons getting passed down.

    20:30 - Don’t try to match your navy’s folks!

21:30 - Time for the CHRO move of the week! Snap (formally known as Snapchat) hired Darcy Henry as their new CHRO. She was poached from Amazon.

24:00 - If you want an entry level HR job, try recruiting!

27:00 - Driver shortages are really crushing the ride-share companies like Uber and Lyft as reported by The Verge.  KD reports that ridesharing companies are adding their own stimulus program by way of signing bonuses for drivers.

29:00 - JLee reports that Peter Capelli says that companies need to stop complaining about the labor shortages because they “broke trust” with workers in his new article. KD acknowledges that JLee is simply reporting what he said, then mocks Capelli for blaming companies for eroding trust that either had to cut payroll or go out of business because of a GLOBAL PANDEMIC.

31:30 - Tim says that once the stimulus ends in September, hiring is not going to get magically easier and it’ll still be hard to hire hourly workers.

  • 64 - Apple Fires New HIre Based on Employee Petition, Cursing in the Workplace

On episode 64 of The HR Famous Podcast, long-time HR leaders (and friends) Tim Sackett, Kris Dunn and Jessica Lee come together to discuss Apple's firing of a new employee based on an employee petition.  Also: Cursing in the workplace.

Listen below (click this link if you don’t see the player) and be sure to subscribe, rate, and review (Apple Podcasts) and follow (Spotify)!

    SHOW HIGHLIGHTS:

1:30 - The whole gang's back together again!

3:30 - KD is on the recruiting trail for recruiters! He’s learned a lot about the current market and he says the biggest thing he’s learned is that a lot of recruiters viable recruiting jobs aren't really that into the world of recruiting.  Many don't work to create their own professional network, which means they're just farmers, relying on direct applies.

6:00 - Tim thinks that there isn’t that big of a difference between a recruiter with some experience and a recruiter with a ton of experience that may be getting paid a ton more.

8:20 - When is it okay to swear at work? Shoutout to friend of the pod, Suzanne Lucas for writing this piece for Inc about when is it acceptable to drop some f-bombs in the workplace.

10:00 - BTS: KD wouldn’t run Tim’s episode of Best Hire Ever because he swore too much.

12:30 - JLee shares that when Marriott was vetting Tim to come speak, one of the lawyers said that Tim had to watch his cursing.

13:30 - Back in the day, Tim auditioned to do a “kitchen nightmares” type show but for fixing businesses. The feedback he got was that he needed to curse more.

18:00 - Next topic: Apple terminated Antonio Garcia Martinez, author of Chaos Monkeys, a very successful book. He was fired from a paragraph in his book that some Apple employees found to be misogynist.

22:00 - Tim asks the question “Do platforms like Slack and Teams give people an opportunity to speak online in ways that they wouldn’t speak in person?”.

26:00 - KD thinks that the burden has never been lower and is easy to pile on. KD has read the book and talk about the fact that the book is written in a form of persona by the author. Also, Apple hired AGM even though he wrote a tell all book on Facebook, which is interesting.

29:00 - KD says that Apple will likely settle with the author for $10-15 million, based on the fact they knew about the book, had talked to references about the book and AGM is now unemployable in tech based on Apple's actions.

  • 63 - Motherhood On The Resume (MOTR)

On episode 63 of The HR Famous Podcast, long-time HR leaders (and friends) Tim Sackett and Jessica Lee come together to discuss Motherhood On The Resume (MOTR), time off from working, and how being a parent raises your levels of empathy.

Listen below (click this link if you don’t see the player) and be sure to subscribe, rate, and review (Apple Podcasts) and follow (Spotify)!

    SHOW HIGHLIGHTS:

2:00 - JLee was out last week because she was vacationing in a tiny house! She wasn’t the biggest fan of it…

4:00 - Have you ever seen anyone put being a parent as an experience on a resume? Tim has seen it a few times for people coming back to work after taking an extended break away to raise a family.

5:30 - There is a new movement to “add mother to your resume” in hopes to destigmatize the duty of being a mother in a workplace environment.

7:00 - Are you okay with your kids’ calling you by your first name? Tim’s son calls his wife by a nickname that is similar to her first name and she’s alright with that but Jessica thinks it would be weird if her kids’ called her by her name.

10:00 - Tim thinks that there are going to be lovers and haters regardless if you make a decision like putting “parenthood” on your resume. He says go do it if you want!

14:00 - MOTR: Motherhood On The Resume! Check it out here!

15:00 - JLee came across a viral LinkedIn post about getting asked ‘what you have been doing to occupy your time’ after being laid off.

16:45 - Tim thinks that it’s a valid question to be asked from a TA perspective because you never know what could be going on in that person’s life, even if it’s in the middle of a recession/pandemic.

21:00 - JLee asks Tim what’s the longest gap where you’re feeling extra weary. He says he only gives executive employees 12 months of a break on their resume before he gets curious.

24:00 - JLee mentions that empathy training for recruiters and TA pros could be really helpful in order to get honest answers from candidates.

28:00 - JLee and Tim both note how parenthood has made them more empathetic in job interviews and recruiting settings.

32:00 - Thanks to JLee and Tim for shouting out my (hi, this is Cam!) first BuzzFeed article. You can check it out here!

  • 62 - Should We Expect Employee Loyalty?

On episode 62 of The HR Famous Podcast, long-time HR leaders (and friends) Tim Sackett and Kris Dunn  come together to discuss the concept of employee loyalty, whether employers should expect it, the 2-way nature of the concept and how to grow employee loyalty at your company.

Listen below (click this link if you don’t see the player) and be sure to subscribe, rate, and review (Apple Podcasts) and follow (Spotify)!

    SHOW HIGHLIGHTS:

2:00 - No JLee today because she’s out on vacation (at least we think).

4:00 - Tim, KD, and JLee always volunteered to coach or lead their kids’ groups because they wanted the job done right. Any other fellow HR pros like that for their kids?

7:20 - First topic of the day: employee loyalty. Many employers feel that employee loyalty is dead but on the flip side, many employees feel that their employers are not loyal to them. Tim doesn’t think that people just showing up to a job is loyalty.

9:00 - Tim talks about one of his employees (shoutout to Lori) that has been at his company for as long as he can remember and shows extreme loyalty to him and the business.

12:00 - Something that Tim thinks shows employee loyalty and something he sees in Lori is her protectiveness over the company. She’s the first to point out someone’s bad behavior, but not in a narc way.

14:40 - KD thinks that a quality manager is essential for any employee loyalty to exist.

17:00 - KD asks Tim “does a loyal employee ever become a part of layoffs?”. Tim says absolutely not.

20:30 - Tim thinks that only about 10% of employees are truly loyal, but companies with great cultures can go up to 50% of employees that are loyal.

22:00 - KD says that if you can poach someone for little to no salary increase, that means they’re running from a burning ship.

25:30 - Tim’s TedTalk conclusion: the breakdown of employee loyalty rests out business environment and performance.

  • 61 - Should We Force Vaccinations in the Workplace?

On episode 61 of The HR Famous Podcast, long-time HR leaders (and friends) Tim Sackett, Kris Dunn and Jessica Lee come together to discuss Clubhouse, how do you get people to get the COVID vaccine, and what remote vs. hybrid work will look like.

Listen below (click this link if you don’t see the player) and be sure to subscribe, rate, and review (Apple Podcasts) and follow (Spotify)!

    SHOW HIGHLIGHTS:

1:45 - Are you on Clubhouse? JLee recently deleted the app from her phone. Tim really wasn’t a fan of the platform either.

5:40 - Tim notes that Clubhouse is good for these “shop talks” that you would be having at a conference or other places in person in the pre-pandemic world.

9:00 - Next topic: COVID vaccinations. JLee asks how much we should be encouraging it in the workplace. KD says we should absolutely be encouraging it to get to a post-pandemic world.

12:30 - JLee asks “who should be the voice of encouraging vaccines at your company?”. Should it be the CEO or someone who maybe is lower down the corporate ladder?

15:00 - Tim mentions a corporate tax rebate that can be given so workers have PTO to go and get the COVID vaccine.

18:30 - JLee gives Tim a great marketing strategy to get people to get vaccinated. She said to take the “we can hug again if you get vaccinated” angle!

22:00 - Is hybrid work the same as virtual work? JLee does not think so and she worries this is going to be a cluster.

25:00 - KD mentions how everyone he has talked to has said that the commute is a huge concern for people going back to work. Tim says his commute has gotten significantly easier and he doesn’t think it will ever get bad again.

29:30 - KD thinks the next big thing for “informal meeting time” is a phone call, not a Zoom call so people don’t feel the pressure to prepare themselves for the call.

34:30 - JLee is a beef jerky eater and she’s found that many women do not snack on that. She asks KD and Tim if their wives snack on beef jerky and they both do not. Tim and KD are fans though!

36:40 - JLee is a fan of Two Chicks beef jerky (a woman owned brand!).

  • 60 - Unspoken Career Rules

On episode 60 of The HR Famous Podcast, long-time HR leaders (and friends) Tim Sackett, Kris Dunn and Jessica Lee come together to discuss vacations in St. George, UT, the crew’s favorite career rules, and an update on hourly hiring in the USA.

Listen below (click this link if you don’t see the player) and be sure to subscribe, rate, and review (Apple Podcasts) and follow (Spotify)!

    SHOW HIGHLIGHTS:

3:30 - KD recently visited Tim in Utah. During their time there, they found out that KD might have a fear of heights.

5:00 - Tim’s wife (and son) are obsessed with the soda shops that are big all over Utah, especially Swig. All they serve at the small shops are soda with a million different combinations and cookies. KD doesn’t understand the hype.

9:00 - Tim and KD learned they vacation well together!

12:30 -  Since it’s graduation time, the crew shares their favorite “career rules”. Tim’s favorites are “don’t leave a job until you have a job” and “the 1 year rule” for career hoppers.

13:45 - JLee’s career rule involves not giving a large window between the job offer and start date.

17:00 - KD thinks that a 3-week buffer between job offer and start date is perfect. Tim thinks maybe 4 would be better.

18:00 - KD’s rule is “the most important thingis to take care of is your boss”.

21:20 - JLee has recently come around on Tim’s “12 month at a job” rule. She recently read something that has said that maybe these employees are just in high demand and they’re not really a job hopper.

24:30 - Tim asks JLee how many one year stints in a row is too many. She thinks more than 2 of them in succession is a little worrisome.

25:40 - TA leaders are talking a lot about how hard it is right now to hire hourly workers. JLee says this is a very hot topic at Marriott.

30:00 - KD notes that hourly hiring even in more white collar spaces is difficult. Companies will need to pull out all the stops to keep their employees around.

  • 59 - Amazon's PIP Plan is Branded! Meet Focus and Pivot

On episode 59 of The HR Famous Podcast, long-time HR leaders (and friends) Tim Sackett, Kris Dunn and Jessica Lee come together to discuss the fact that Amazon AWS has branded performance improvement plan programs called "FOCUS" and "PIVOT".  They alternate between being impressed horrified and entertained by this branding.

Listen below (click this link if you don’t see the player) and be sure to subscribe, rate, and review (Apple Podcasts) and follow (Spotify)!

    SHOW HIGHLIGHTS -

3:30 - Gary V recently did a post about the impending doom of meetings in a hybrid world and KD wrote about it on the HR Capitalist. Tim doesn’t care if people want to be remote for the team meeting but he’s going to be there in person.

6:15 - JLee thinks there will be some proximity bias in meetings to those who are actually there at the meeting.

7:00 - Congrats to the newest Girl Scout troop leader on the pod, Jessica Lee!

9:30 - KD thinks that teams will have to choose to do either all zoom or all in person (with people dialing in and being second class citizens), or the manager/facilitator of the meeting is going to have to be really, really good to manage it.

12:45 - Next topic: Amazon. KD wrote another post, this time about the Amazon union issues. KD brings up Jeff Bezos’ shareholder letter.

13:30 - Bezos has a mentality that every employee should start the job like it’s “day 1”. Tim is a big fan of the mentality.

15:45 - JLee points out that Bezos says he needs to create a “better vision” for his employees.

18:30 - KD pulls out one more thing he likes from Bezos’ letter. The message is consistent with the “day one” mentality and talks to “not being typical”.

21:00 - Tim’s son’s friend works at Amazon in supply chain. This friend was led to believe when he was interviewing that he would be working at the Amazon plant in Detroit but he found out after accepting the offer that the job was in Gary, IN.

22:30 - A leaked Amazon AWS memo shows program details related to performance improvement plans. KD breaks down the branding programs, called "Focus" and "Pivot", as reported in Business Insider.

26:40 - JLee says that getting rid of 6% of employees is nothing and people are a little sensitive about 6%.

29:00 - The crew can’t stop making jokes about the different career help programs at Amazon ‘Pivot’ & ‘Focus’.

On episode 58 of The HR Famous Podcast, long-time HR leaders (and friends) Tim Sackett, Kris Dunn and Jessica Lee come together to discuss what happens when HR pros get harassed in the workplace. JLee shares her story of being harassed at work as an HR pro, the process that followed and then discusses the situation and process with KD and Tim.

    SHOW HIGHLIGHTS:

1:30 - Tim got his first COVID vaccine. He’s the first of the crew to get it! He got it at an old Sear’s!

5:00 - First topic of the day: JLee shares her story about being sexually harassed at work.

12:30 - Tim asks JLee what percentage of women have experienced harassment in the workplace. She says well over 50%.

15:00 - KD asks JLee what happened after she reported the harassment. JLee asked HR not to do anything about it and she confronted the harasser herself.

19:40 - JLee says that she felt like she needed to handle it herself because she was a strong female leader. She also notes that she didn’t have confidence in the HR employees to handle it effectively.

21:50 - Tim asks JLee if she thinks what this person did was a fireable offense. She says that from her HR perspective, it seems like this employee shouldn’t be working there because of the repeated offenses.

23:00 - KD says that he misses employee investigations. JLee doesn’t miss them and Tim doesn't miss the lose-lose investigations.

26:30 - JLee says that her boss at the time was very protective of her and she worried that the boss was going to do something if she didn’t handle it herself.

30:20 - KD asks JLee if she thinks other global cultures have caught up with workplace behavior and treatment. She thinks that some pockets of the world are more progressive than others but overall, they have not caught up.

33:00 - Tim mentions how as a society, we’ve started the practice of guilty companies into doing the right thing. He mentions the example of disparities in the NCAA March Madness tournament with the men’s teams and women’s teams.

40:00 - JLee remembers that she has all of the email correspondences of her dealings with her sexual harrassment. . She’s an A+ HR employee!

On episode 57 of The HR Famous Podcast, long-time HR leaders (and friends) Tim Sackett, Kris Dunn and Jessica Lee come together to discuss hiring for government clearance positions, Amazon monitoring employees (drivers this time around) and how the unemployment rate of 6% feels high based on what they are feeling from a recruiting perspective.

Listen below (click this link if you don’t see the player) and be sure to subscribe, rate, and review (Apple Podcasts) and follow (Spotify)!

    SHOW HIGHLIGHTS:

4:00 - JLee says that she feels like a yuppie with her Peloton and her (soon to hers) electric vehicle.

5:00 - Everyone’s favorite cult, Amazon, is discussed in a new Business Insider article about their AI-equipped delivery vehicles. Delivery workers for Amazon are claiming this a privacy issue. JLee thinks there is no such thing as privacy in the world that we live in.

8:00 - KD thinks this is more of a jobs economy issue. It falls under the issue of job quality and automation of jobs.

12:00 - JLee thinks there’s a difference between surveillance and capturing data. She doesn’t think that the AI in the delivery trucks are surveillance and they’re using it more from a data perspective.

15:15 - KD thinks the more commodity driven a job is, the more you’re likely to be monitored.

18:45 - Tim asks JLee if Marriot is seeing a huge increase in hiring. She says not yet but they’re anticipating it coming in pretty soon. They’re expecting revenge travel to be a major thing.

22:45 - Tim says that certain industries still are struggling to find qualified candidates and the overall employment rate is elevated. He’s heard from enterprise leaders that recruiters are having a crazy amount of recs open.

26:00 - Tim says that Oracle and Workday launched big internal mobility tech and they found that employees are wanting to stay at the same company. Tim thinks leaders need to career path their employees or they’re going to get poached.

30:45 - KD thinks that recruiters need to be aware of where the marketplace is at and be able to communicate that effectively to execs.

31:45 - We had a business school lesson today on HR Famous!
