  • Talking Identity Politics, Bernadette Mayer, and Social Justice with Nancy Klepsch
    Nancy Klepsch is a local poet and a teacher. Her poems have been published in Oberon, 13th Moon, Poetry magazine, Salvage, 200 Proof and Chronogram among others, and online on Barzakh and Albany Poets. "god must be a boogie man" is her first book of poetry and is available from her website at nancyklepsch.com. She has been reading at featured readings or open mics in the Albany area for the past 20 years. Klepsch is the co-host, with Dan Wilcox, of the Second Sunday @ 2 open mic for poetry and prose at Collar City Mushrooms in Troy, NY.
    On April 12, 2015, Nancy read her poem "A Queer Horse" at the "Up The River, Issue Three" launch reading at McGeary's.

  • Remembering Colia Clark
    Colia Clark, a pillar of the American civil rights movement passed away on November 4 at the age of 82. She worked with the NAACP alongside Medgar Evers in Mississippi. Then, as a member of the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), she played key roles in the effort to establish equal voting rights in Selma, Alabama and the Birmingham Campaign. Later she worked with Cynthia Mckinney in her Presidential Campaign and ran for the Senate from New York twice on the Green Party ballot line. She was more recently a vocal supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement and chair of Grandmothers for the Release of Mumia Abu Jamal.
    She was also a professor at SUNY Albany. In March 2013, she spoke at the Sanctuary for Independent Media about the importance of Troy and this area in the underground railroad and the the resistance to slavery.

  • Election Reformists Want NYS to Adopt Ranked Choice Voting
    NYC has recently adopted ranked choice voting for its primaries in local election and several states (Maine and Alaska) are using it for races including federal elections. Over 100 communities nationwide are now using RCV, where voters ranked candidates in order of preference and the winner must end up with a majority of the votes. Howie Hawkins discusses the status of the effort to promote such election reforms in New York. With Mark Dunlea for Hudson Mohawk Magazine.
