July 01, 2025Returning to Faith after Religious TraumaI grew up in the deep south where religious trauma runs rampant (though I honestly think most of us have our own version whether you lived in the Bible Belt or not). So even as someone who used to feel at home at Bible Summer Camp (was it just the sense of belonging? tbh, prob), I couldn't stand the hypocrisy I saw with so many people acting up and then feeling fully absolved by showing up at church every week, or the heinous acts that happen in the world in the name of religion. And I know I'm not alone in being SO removed from the church/religion for YEARS....and I also know I'm not alone in feeling an intuitive pull back to God. But I first had to figure out what was underneath the resistence I felt and how to unravel the "bad" that I still saw wrapped up in religion to even begin to be ok to say the word God, much less have a practice of connecting. And TBH, it's still a work in progress...if you're on a journey back to faith, I'm right there with ya. This episode is for you no matter where you are on that journey - maybe you still immediately push something aside if it in any way has a connection to God/Jesus/Faith...maybe you're intrigued by being able to surrender to faith, but anti-organized religion and dont see a way around that...maybe you're actively in a practice again but still feeling a disconnect...or maybe you are well established in a practice but have some feelings about how religion/faith gets abused as a rationale for not so nice things... No matter where you are, I hope this epsiode helps you feel a bit more seen and heard and well, validated.
