Taylor is well-traveled (having visited more than 45 countries), and has embraced mentorship within the travel advising profession, being trained by Shelby Donley, the founder of Camelback Travel. John Diorio has spent his entire career in travel, from the tour operator and wholesale space to Hotels.com and, most recently, Virgin Voyages.

Despite this, Diorio – now the vice president of North American sales for the cruise line — said his relationship with travel didn’t start until he enrolled in travel school at age 19; prior to that, his jaunts consisted of yearly family vacations from his hometown in New York to the Jersey Shore.

But after his very first flight (to Dayton, Ohio, in his early 20s), Diorio was hooked, and he hasn’t looked back since.

In this episode of Humans of Travel, Diorio reflects on his professional journey leading up to his role at Virgin Voyages, which included the lessons learned in travel school (which teaches students how to work in every sector of the industry), and some of his favorite memories from his career. He’ll also share his thoughts on mentorship in the travel industry, and what it was like starting with Virgin Voyages three years before the product had officially launched.

Today, we're sitting down with Sam Johnson of Prescription Travel, an independent affiliate with Montecito Village Travel. Johnson credits his early success to growing up in Big Sky, Montana, where he held many hospitality jobs and was exposed to the work of travel advisors. Since he became an advisor himself, Johnson's sales have jumped from $100,000 last year to a projected $1.2 million this year. And while many wait to give back, he's already launched an internship program with the University of Georgia, and has coached 12 interns.

In 1994, before the home-based travel advisor was a popular career choice in the travel industry, Michelle Fee co-founded Cruise Planners, a franchise travel agency model for home-based professionals, that would grow to become a staple in the industry.

In this episode of Humans of Travel, Fee will reflect on what it was like during Cruise Planners’ early days — when the first cohort of advisors comprised only five people — to its present state of supporting and training hundreds of travel advisors on what it takes to open their own businesses.

Grace McBride got her start in the travel industry earlier than most — as an undergraduate at Cornell University. During her sophomore year, McBride worked as a marketing intern for JetBlue, where she helped write marketing and ad copy for the airline. After catching the travel bug, she joined MilesAhead, a travel agency founded by Cornell classmate Rob Karp.

But it was an entrepreneurship class that ultimately gave McBride and her friend, Sarah Peters, the idea for an entirely new travel business: TripKit, an itinerary builder and assistant service for luxury travel advisors (a company that the pair eventually sold in 2022).
