  • Alexa PenaVega & Carlos PenaVega, authors of What If Love Is The Point
ABOUT ALEXA PENAVEGA, CARLOS PENAVEGA AND WHAT IF LOVE IS THE POINT

Carlos PenaVega (Nickelodeon's Big Time Rush and member of boy band Big Time Rush) and Alexa PenaVega (Spy Kids, ABC Family's Ruby & The Rockits) will release their debut memoir "What If Love Is The Point?" on June 28 via HarperCollins. The title is currently available for preorder. During the course of their careers, the popular actors, along with their successes, faced many difficult challenges: Carlos was struggling with the influences of Hollywood and was reeling from a broken relationship. Alexa was healing from a divorce and an eating disorder she kept hidden. They felt lost and wondered, what's the point of it all?

While overcoming the many financial, emotional, spiritual and marital challenges after the pair met and married, the two have countless TV and film appearances under their belt - including an influential season on "Dancing with the Stars," where they made history as the only married couple ever to compete against each other. Those appearances in Season 21, which are powerfully chronicled by Alexa, brought the two to a whole new national audience, and gave them weekly opportunities to witness about their faith and talk about marriage as a sacred commitment people should still believe in, led thousands of people of all ages to write in, thanking them for taking a bold stance and even, in some cases, helping reignite the marriages of some viewers. With all of the buzz around them, Alexa and Carlos had offers to do a reality show, but they wanted to steer clear of that world because they felt a heartfelt inspirational book would be the ideal way to chronicle their amazing lives.

Says the couple: "We wanted to talk about it all. We wanted to write about all the junk, the 'norms' in society that aren't good for us, how to navigate friendships, what it's like becoming a parent, and how we learned to draw healthy boundaries at work. But we mainly want to ask, 'What's the point? What's the point of all of this living?'" They freely admit that as 30-something human beings, working performers, husband and wife, and now parents of young children, life is not easy - and staying committed to each other and their faith is often difficult and stressful despite the love and beauty at the center of their relationship. It's a choice that they must make daily.

"What If Love Is the Point?" is the PenaVegas' shared story about the true joy they've experienced and the insights that have changed their lives, showing how:

. Putting faith at the center has helped them in their marriage, their parenting, and even their career choices.

. Giving to others, instead of focusing on themselves, brought real fulfillment.

. Loving unconditionally and living selflessly helped them find each other--and in the process, discovering who they really were.

Filled with open, honest, and vulnerable discussions, "What If Love Is the Point?" provides insight and guidance for others who may be facing similar challenges, helping them feel less alone and like someone has their back. Says Alexa, "Choosing to be consistent is what takes the fear out of our life. We no longer worry about what people think about us on social media. If we mess up, we own up to it and apologize for it. We don't just show perfect moments. Writing this book was a wonderful, awesome and healing way to talk about the many things that have gone on in our lives up till now."

    ABOUT CARLOS

Carlos "Pena" PenaVega starred as Carlos Garcia on the Nickelodeon series Big Time Rush and then traveled with the show's band, Big Time Rush. He is the voice of Bobby Santiago in the Nickelodeon cartoons The Loud House and The Casagrandes, was the host of the network's game show Webheads, and has had guest-starring roles on several prime television shows. He and his wife, Alexa, appeared on the twenty-first season ofDancing with the Stars in fall 2015. In January 2014, Carlos and Alexa married in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, combining their last names to form PenaVega. The couple shares a YouTube channel, LexLovesLos, and are the parents of two sons, Ocean and Kingston, and one baby girl, Rio.

    ABOUT ALEXA

Alexa "Vega" PenaVega is best known for her role as Carmen Cortez in the hit film series Spy Kids, and then reappeared as a grown-up Carmen in the fourth film, Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World. She has performed on Broadway in Hairspray, played Ruby Gallagher on the ABC Family television sitcom Ruby & the Rockits, and has held roles in several other films. Most recently, she starred in a series of Hallmark made-for-television films. When she and Carlos Pena married in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, the couple combined their last names to form PenaVega and are now the proud parents of two sons, Ocean and Kingston, and one baby girl, Rio.

  • 100 or Nothing Series: "Building Each Other Up" Romans 15:1-6
    Romans 15:1-6
    New International Version

15 We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves. 2 Each of us should please our neighbors for their good, to build them up. 3 For even Christ did not please himself but, as it is written: “The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.”[a] 4 For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.

5 May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, 6 so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The "shepherding/pastoral" gifting gives Paul the unique ability to cultivate rich dialogue and process the difficult questions of life. While he has many stories to share of his own journey of learning who God is, who he is, and what that means for his life, he knows God can use any conversation to do "abundantly more" beyond simply telling his stories.

Paul enjoys sharing what it means to take crazy steps of faith, how to persevere through hardship, and how to hold firm to the belief that "God is God and God is good", no matter the circumstances.

  • MSNBC anchor and trial lawyer Katie Phang, host of podcast Class Action
    ABOUT CLASS ACTION

iHeartRadio and Sound Argument LLC Announce the launch of "Class Action," a New Documentary Series About the Next Generation of Lawyers

iHeartRadio, the no. 1 podcast publisher according to Podtrac, and Sound Argument LLC have launched a new documentary podcast titled "Class Action." Hosted by Katie Phang, a trial lawyer, anchor, and host for MSNBC and Peacock, the 12-part podcast series will track a diverse cast of outstanding law students who are battling it out in mock trial competitions across the country. The first two episodes debuted on June 7 and can be heard on iHeartRadio and all other major platforms.

The budding young lawyers on "Class Action" are extraordinary, bright, ambitious and sometimes ruthless. They are poised to enter a justice system that is under intense public scrutiny. And jury trials-a bedrock of a fair justice system-are becoming rare. Prosecutors aggressively push plea deals on defendants, while defense attorneys, often untrained in courtroom procedure, urge them to accept. But in the wake of high-profile verdicts like the George Floyd case, and with the growth in trial "mooting"/mock trialing at major law firms, trial advocacy training is gaining popularity. Mock trial tournaments are quickly becoming a necessary and exciting kind of collegiate sport. One tournament director, who works full time as a homicide investigator, sees it this way:

"All of a sudden we take lawyers, they graduate law school, and we expect them to walk into a courtroom and talk about life and death and millions of dollars without any practice. Think about music, playing the violin in your basement. And then, all of a sudden, walking into Carnegie Hall one day and playing for the first time. It would never happen in music. It would never happen in sports. Why should it happen in law?," said Jared Rosenblatt, Hofstra University.

Host Katie Phang will guide us through these young lawyers' stories, disentangling the complexities of American law along the way. Listeners will meet Andy Vizcarra, a first-generation American whose parents emigrated from Mexico to Texas and have worked tirelessly at their restaurant to put their daughter through law school; Tyler Volesky, a young Native American politician, now a law student in South Dakota; Ellie Sands and Anjani Shah-part of a team of activists from Brooklyn Law-who battle for justice not only in mock trial but in real-life legal clinics; DeAndre Bell, a self-styled "church boy" from Houston, who plans to run for President in 2040; and Lajeanne Shelton, the powerful lion of the Dillard team who bristles at comments that she's too aggressive in court.

"Working on this podcast and meeting these trial students and coaches has re-affirmed my faith in the crucial roles that jury trials play in our lives," said Phang. "Over the course of a year, I've met a group of inspired coaches who recognize the value of investing in the next generation of trial attorneys. And I am thrilled to witness students who have overcome significant obstacles to learn and honor the craft of courtroom procedure. 'Class Action' is a breath of fresh air in these troubled times. It's a reminder of why I became a trial lawyer in the first place--- to defend our democratic judicial system."

Producers Lisa Gray and Kevin Huffman spent a year recording the grueling bootcamps, scrimmages and competitions with law teams from Brooklyn Law, St. Mary's University in San Antonio, and the University of South Dakota. Listeners will hear the young lawyers reach near-exhaustion arguing cases at high-stakes tournaments. The producers also followed an undergraduate team from Dillard University in New Orleans trying to bounce back from the twin disasters of Covid-19 and Hurricane Ida to make a Cinderella run at the national championship. Lawyers, law students and any listener who loves a good story will be caught up in the drama that unfolds, armchair-quarterbacking the cases. Judging judges. Predicting decisions.

We'll hear from St. Mary's trial coach AJ Bellido de Luna, a former US Marine, turned cop, turned advocate. He loves his job and protects his students like the warrior he's always been. "I put them through a boot camp in the summer," he said. "I want them to be good workers, willing and if they have a chip on their shoulder, fine, I can deal with that. I have a chip, too." At South Dakota University's Knudson School of Law, its coach, Professor Laura Rose, herself the daughter of a legendary advocacy coach, who relentlessly prepares her team for the big leagues-to knock the "South Dakota Nice" out of them. And in New Orleans, beloved coach Adria Kimbrough reveals, mid-season, that she is leaving her team at the end of the year. But first she wants that national championship for her HBCU students.

"Class Action" plunges listeners into a rich verité-driven soundscape, replete with mic'd-up behind-the-scenes drama, in-depth character scenes and immersive courtroom battles. It's a "cinematic" podcast: listeners are immersed in the action, it's direct and emotional. The music swells, stories play out. Coaches urge players on the sidelines, as Katie and a team of noted trial attorneys-including Preet Bharara, Elie Honig, Lara Bazelon and Tony Serra- help break the code of American law. "Class Action" is a co-production of Sound Argument LLC and iHeartMedia and is distributed by the iHeartPodcast Network. Follow us on Twitter at @ClassActionPod.

  • Former NBA player-coach Ray Scott, author of The NBA In Black And White: The Memoir of a Trailblazing NBA Player and Coach
ABOUT RAY SCOTT AND THE NBA IN BLACK AND WHITE

A memoir of hard lessons learned in the racially segregated and sometimes outright racist NBA of the early '60s by celebrated NBA player and first Black Coach of the Year, Ray Scott.

Ray Scott was part of the early wave of Black NBA players like Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain who literally changed how the game of professional basketball is played, leading to the tremendously popular financial blockbuster the NBA is today. Scott was a successful 6'9" forward/center after being chosen by the Detroit Pistons as the #4 pick of the 1961 NBA draft, and then again after he was named head coach of the Pistons in 1972, winning Coach of the Year in the spring of 1974-the first Black man ever to capture that honor.

Scott's is a story of quiet persistence, hard work, and, most of all, respect. He credits the mentorship of NBA player and coach Earl Lloyd and talks about fellow Philly native Wilt Chamberlain and friends Muhammad Ali and Aretha Franklin, among many others. Scott has lived through one of the most turbulent times in our nation's history, especially the time of assassinations of so many Black leaders at the end of the 1960s. Through it all, his voice has remained quiet and measured, transcending all the sorrows with steadiness. This is his story, told in collaboration with well-known basketball writer, former college player, and CBA coach Charley Rosen. Racism in the world of sports is still all over the news-from Brian Flores's racial discrimination lawsuit against the NFL, to Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva being allowed to compete in the Olympics while African-American runner Sha'Carri Richardson was banned, to the prolonged detainment of Black WNBA star Brittney Griner in Russia. And while we still have much work to do to make equality a reality, The NBA in Black and White answers the question "How did we go from there being only white players in the NBA to the highest paid athletes in the NBA being Black?" and reminds us of the progress we've made toward equal opportunity and fair compensation for people of color.

Philly native John Raymond "Ray" Scott's college career began at the University of Portland. After three seasons in the professional Eastern Basketball League, he was chosen as the 4th pick in the 1961 NBA draft by the Detroit Pistons. He spent six years with the Pistons as a stand-out rebounder and deadly shooter from the perimeter, and another five years playing for the Baltimore Bullets and the Virginia Squires. Then, in October 1972, Scott was promoted from Assistant to Head Coach of the Detroit Pistons, thanks in part to strong support from former coach Earl Lloyd who, a decade earlier, had scouted Scott and recommended that he be the Pistons top pick. Two years later he was named NBA Coach of the Year, the first African-American to win the coveted award. From 1976 to 1979, Scott was Men's Basketball Head Coach at Eastern Michigan University. Today, he lives with his family in Eastern Michigan, not far from Detroit. This is his first book.

ADVANCE PRAISE FOR THE NBA IN BLACK AND WHITE

"Scott, who became the first Black coach to be named NBA Coach of the Year in 1974, delivers a moving reflection on his influential career.Fans of the sport will relish Scott's insights, including how the game's been changed by the emphasis on three-point shooting.A valuable addition to hoops history." - Publishers Weekly

"This is a truly wonderful book that reveals the difficulties of the quota system and all the other obstacles that African American NBA players had to face when the league began to integrate in the mid-1950s and beyond. It also tells how Ray and many other great Black players managed to achieve the fulfillment of their respective talents. Indeed, Ray was the rare successful NBA player who became a successful NBA coach. Along the way, the plight of 'ordinary' Black citizens who succeeded and/or tragically failed in facing their own racial barriers is addressed. Above all, Ray's honesty, intelligence, and deep understanding of how social injustice influences every aspect of all our collective and individual lives, makes this narrative totally relevant today. There's enough wisdom in here to enlighten and inspire even people who have little or no interest in basketball. Incredibly powerful-a must read." - Hubie Brown, NBA Coach of the Year (1978, 2004), member of the Basketball Hall of Fame

"Ray Scott has chronicled his four-decades-long basketball odyssey beautifully. It is a thoughtful and well-written book about the transforming landscape of the NBA. He shares his firsthand knowledge and experiences and adds value to an era not so often discussed. I have been blessed to have known Ray, and blessed even more to have someone who trudged through the early days of the NBA take me along with him for the journey."- Marques Johnson, twelve-year NBA player, five-time All Star

"I first met Ray Scott in 1965 when I was a rookie player for the Detroit Pistons. I was scared to death of the challenges I faced trying to make it in the NBA, but Ray welcomed me to the team. As one of the veterans, he organized all the players to work out and prepare for camp together. It meant the world to me, and I have never forgotten how he treated me. Ray's book brought back so many good memories from my NBA days. He was and is a leader and a wonderful example of how we should all respect, get along, and love each other. Ray is a good man."- Tom Van Arsdale, 12-year NBA player, three-time All Star
