Today we have two lovely ladies from Asheville on the show: Jess Williams and Miranda Allison. Jess and Miranda are good friends who found each other through the comedy scene in Asheville where they’ve been performing standup over the last year. Jess is from NY/Philly area and Miranda is from Hendersonville, NC. In today’s interview, they share their comedy origin stories…Miranda describes how she got on stage after living in a van traveling across the country and how she’s found a comedy home in NC, and Jess shares the motivation she received from friends and acquaintances in NY before doing her first open mic at a sold out show in Johnson City, TN. We also discuss relationships, donating plasma, how comedy helps you grow as a person, and they share tips they learned from Becca Steinhoff who runs a standup comedy class in Asheville. Our guest today is Ivan Judas, our first native Mexican comedian on the show! Ivan was born and raised in Aguascalientes, Mexico. In 2023, he spent several months visiting Asheville where he regularly performed standup and quickly became a favorite of audiences and the local comics. Ivan is a native Spanish speaker and the only comic I know who can perform in both English and Spanish, getting big laughs regardless. In this interview, Ivan describes the differences between standup in Mexico vs. the United States, we discuss which body part we are most ashamed of, Ivan shares what he would do if he ran the Illuminati, and much more. On today’s episode we welcome the man in black himself, George Wagner. He dresses like Johnny Cash (or an Olive Garden waiter). Now living in Canton, originally from Toledo, OH, George is a regular in the Asheville and Greenville comedy scenes who has been doing standup since 2017. By day, George owns a computer consulting business. Geo uses observational comedy with a twisted take on things he encounters to bring laughs to crowds both virtually and in real life. He’s the founder of Buttondown comedy which hosts virtual shows, as well as shows live & in person at the Boiler Room in Asheville. Geo also has an angelic voice you can catch on the Karaoke mic @ Sharkey’s downtown Greenville. On today’s interview, we learn by Geo is a geek, hear stories about his time at Dragoncon, Geo explains Y2K, we learn tips to stay looking young, and Geo walks us through a traumatic car accident story. One of my favorite people in Greenville joins the show today: Samiha Islam! Samiha is a Bangladeshi born Asian-American engineer and data specialist. She grew up in NYC and found her way to Greenville, SC 3 years ago for her career. She is a student of life and constantly challenges herself through pageantry, modeling, public speaking, teaching Zumba and experiments here a there in the music and comedy scene. She is a founder of a nonprofit-New Yorkers for Bangladeshi Mutual Aid. And she volunteers with Rescue Exotics-an animal sanctuary based in Easley, SC. She is Miss South Dakota Earth and was recently featured on a documentary by Vice News. Kelby is father, nurse, Army vet, Yogi, actor, and comedian. On this interview, we reminisce about early memories of standup, and Kelby tells his comedy story, beginning in El Paso, Texas when he first was inspired to try standup, through his time in Greenville, Tennessee, and now Hollywood. Historian, seamstress, and comedian Madison Braswell joins the show today. Originally from Charlotte, Madison moved to Greenville and got on stage for the first time fall of 2022 after splitting with her fiancé, and getting peer pressured by her friend Alexis Ramirez. After getting on stage she fell in love with standup. Madison developed a vocal chord disorder over COVID (spasmodic dysphonia) that limited her ability to speak/interact with people, and standup has been the perfect outlet to express herself. This interview was a blast – in addition to learning Madison’s comedy story, we discuss ugly duckling phases in high school, at what age we want to die, Madison’s conspiracy theory about “The Lost Colony of Roanoke,” childhood trauma & how to get over it.
