Last March 8, the world celebrated International Women’s Day. In the Philippines , the whole month of March is National Women’s Month according to the Philippine Commission on Women or the PCW. Its website states that this year’s celebration theme is “We Make Change for Women” to highlight the empowerment of women as active contributors to and claim holders of development.

Furthermore, PCW states that  this pursuit of development is also anchored on the commitment of “Malasakit at Pagbabago” or True Compassion and Change. 

As a way to celebrate Women’s Month in the context of homeschooling, we are featuring today homeschool moms from a sector with its own unique journey and challenges: Overseas Filipino Working moms who also homeschool their kids. We have invited three OFW homeschooling moms to join us today.

Homeschool or not we have an important job as parents of shy kids to intentionally provide social interaction. In one school of thought, self-directed learning (SDL) is based in the autonomous, independent individual who chooses to undertake learning for personal growth or some say "Unschooling"

While learning approaches are gradually accommodating self-learning methods, there are some prevalent controversies over the meaning of self-learning— whether it can be implemented in formal education; to what extent learning should be self-directed; whether learning happens in a holistic, organised manner or in isolation and chaos; and whether teachers have a role to play in the process. This has led to the rise of a number of myths about self-learning, which cause parents and curriculum coordinators to shy away from implementing such learning methods. It is important to correct these misconceptions so that today’s learners can meet their own needs and aspirations with personalised learning styles. 

That is why we invited Jhoanna Villarama to discuss this misconceptions. She is the founder and President of Abot Tala, an alternative yo mainstream high-school and member the Liberated Learner's network .
