When Samana and I worked together, one part of her job involved calling people she didn't know and had never spoken to before, and I have NEVER heard someone be as good at talking to people as she is. She has this way of making every single person she speaks to feel like they've won the lottery. In this episode I call my uncle, Bill, and I tell him a joke.

My Uncle Bill is my Mum's brother, and he lives in South Africa, so we weren't in each other's lives much when I was a kid.

After not seeing him at all for almost 20 years, I got a short job contract in South Africa and asked if I could come and visit him for a week at the end of it. It turns out we were both very nervous about how it would go, and if we would get along or have anything in common, but after about 15 minutes we decided we absolutely loved each other, and we haven't stopped since.

I hadn't spoken to Jez for a while when I made this call, so after the jokes I said to him, "Hey Jez, let's say pretend goodbye so I have it recorded, and then we can just chat for a bit." Sometimes I think I should be paying Nikki for the amount she saves me on therapy - talking with Nik always ends with me feeling more calm, more grounded and more prepared for whatever's coming than I was when we started. And when we go walking she brings her adorable dogs and I get to pretend they're mine when people compliment them.

In this episode I call my friend, Robin, and I tell him a joke.

Robin is a pilot, hence the awful airplane joke, and one of the smartest (and kindest) cookies I've ever met. Robin was supposed to get married this year, but couldn't because, well, you know. The grace that he and Siobhán have taken that with is genuinely inspiring, and I can't wait to celebrate them properly next year.
