Lens Rental Services Offer More Help Than You May Think

If you haven't used any lens rental services before, you may want to take a look to see what you're missing.

In this episode of The Photo Flunky Show, Lee and I discuss some of the benefits of lens rental services that may not be apparent, but could save you some hassle and frustration.

Why Rent Lenses?

There are some standard reasons to rent a lens:

* You want to try it out before you make a purchase decision

* You don't need it often enough to justify purchasing one

Other reasons to rent:

* Your lens is in for repair

* You need another copy of a lens for a job

* You don't want to travel with your own gear

While good reasons, those aren't the only ways you can take advantage of rental agencies. That's because they have more than just lenses for rent.

More Than Lenses

In addition to a large selection of lenses for popular cameras, many of these lens rental services also carry things like:

* Camera bodies

* Video cameras

* Lighting Equipment

* Underwater housings

* Tripods and support

Candid Family Photos Take Patience and Practice

Candid family photos can be more than snapshots, and they can delight your family and friends who enjoy the way you captured a moment to preserve their memories. If you have distant relatives or friends, these candid family photos are a way of sharing the moments they're missing and making them feel included.

So what's the difference between a snapshot and a candid family photo? Snapshots tend to be random and poorly executed. We've all seen shots that were taken without any forethought, and it shows.

Your family and friends will often look past those problems and be happy to see the photos, but you know that you can do more.

Family Moments Are Events

In a sense, capturing candid family photos is like being an event photographer. You're anticipating moments to capture.

Before those moments arrive, you position yourself to get the best background or lighting that you can have when the special moment arrives.

Make sure you're ready before someone opens a special gift so you can capture their expression. You don't want to give directions, since the photos are supposed to be candid and natural. However, that doesn't mean you can't position your camera to make the best use of lighting, background and composition.

Remember that candid photos of your family are a gift from the heart. It's OK if the photos aren't technically perfect. What's important is that you're preserving memories for your family, sharing with those who can't be there, and giving you a chance to practice event photography with the ones you love.

Canva for Photographers is Like Strength Training for Runners

Thank you for listening to The Photo Flunky Show. We decided to have a discussion about using Canva for photographers, particularly those of us who aren't trained as graphic designers.

Canva is a design tool. So how does that help photographers? In much the same way that strength training helps runners improve their sport. It strengthens an area where you may be weak and helps you become a better storyteller. Suddenly, you find yourself thinking about how you may use your photographs to make a statement, rather than as just a pretty picture.

The truth is that you can do everything in Photoshop that you can do in Canva, and much more. In fact, Canva isn't a tool you use for post processing or finishing your photos.

It has very basic filters for exposure, contrast, blur and other global adjustments, but it really doesn't have any brushes or local adjustments as you would find in Lightroom or Photoshop.

So why would we recommend Canva for photographers?

It's because Canva does a great job of helping you create graphics and documents using your photos. It has layouts for different types of documents, social media platforms, ads, and marketing materials.

Best of all, you can use the basic version for free.

I upgraded to Canva for Work, which includes some additional benefits. Canva for Work allows me to upload my own fonts, create my own templates for social media or other documents. I also have a Brand Kit that let's me easily choose my own color palette and fonts so I can be consistent from one message.

Canva for Work also lets you provide some organization to your saved designs. Since I have multiple web sites, I have a brand kit for each one and can store my designs separately.

Improve Your Photographic Composition Using Fundamental Elements

Thank you for listening to The Photo Flunky Show. In episode 60, we talk about how you use composition to tell a story by arranging art and design elements.

Instead of talking about things like “Rule of Thirds” and “Leading Lines“, we have a different approach. We use simple questions like Why, What and How.

The answer to “Why” you need a composition is pretty simple. You're trying to communicate, to tell a story, that fits in a given format. Part of your answer to “Why” includes the format you need your photo to fill when you're done. That could be specific dimensions for artwork on your wall, social media, print publication, or another use.

We think of the art elements as tools that are at your disposal. These elements answer the “What” part of your composition. As in, what are you going to put inside your frame? Here are a few examples.

* Color

* Shape

* Line

* Texture

* Space

We think of the design elements as styles or techniques that you can use. The design elements describe “How” you're going to arrange those art elements in your frame. Here are a few examples.

* Balance

* Contrast

* Movement

* Pattern

* Emphasis

These are just a few examples you can use in Art and Design. Some of them may be different than you've heard before. For example, we didn't list light as one of the elements, but we mention how you can use it to provide contrast.
