Post processing techniques are as much a part of your art as your photography.

We've heard that good artists copy and great artists steal. That may be true, but I think there's something else to consider.

Like all art, there are trends and styles. They come and they go.

If you're on the tail end of copying or stealing, your art just doesn't have the same impact as something original or new. Post processing techniques are like fashion. Some are timeless and others are past their prime.

In this episode, Lee and I discuss some of the post processing techniques we think it's time to stop using. Are we wrong, or are there some post processing techniques you'd like to add to the list.  Please let us know in the comments.

William:   Today we’re going to be talking about post processing techniques whose time has passed; things that were once interesting and unique and now have perhaps been a little overdone.

There are post processing techniques – things that people have been doing for a while because they have seen someone else has done it and it really looked great.  It was very creative the first time you saw some of these things and now we’ve seen enough of them and it’s kind of time to move on and do something different.  And we’ll start off with a perennial favorite for things that people love to hate and that is selective color.

For this episode, I'm not pointing any fingers without admitting that I've done it, too.  There are some subjects that photographers have shot to death and it's time to move along.

Lee and I discuss a handful of photo subjects that we tend to shoot too much because, well, everyone else is shooting them, too. The problem is that these subjects aren't really all that interesting, or being photographed in interesting ways.

William:   And today we’re going to be talking about subjects that photographers have shot over and over and over again.

William:   I suppose it is and it’s not that the subjects themselves are bad.  It’s just they’ve been overdone.  They have been shot to death.  Not necessarily in a unique or creative way.

We've all seen some really great black and white photography, but is it necessary or useful in a modern age? After all, every digital camera defaults to color photography.

Why are some people still using black and white for their photography?

It's not that we don't like black & white photography. It does a great job of eliminating color as a distraction and allowing you to focus on form. However, it isn't a cure-all technique to turn a bad photo int instant art. There is a time and place for black and white photography.

Lee and I discuss how black and white photography fits in the realm of modern photography. We'll cover the types of photos that work very well in black and white, and also discuss when black and white is a mistake for your photos.
