When you start photography, you spend a lot of time learning the technical skills. Most educators teach you technical skills. After a while, you find some soft skills that nobody else seems to discuss.

Hi, welcome to the Photo Flunky Show.  I’m William Beem.

 

Lee:         Hi, I’m Lee.

Today we’re going to be talking about five secrets beginning photographers should know, and this is kind of an add-on to what I had posted earlier this week on 101 Simple Secrets for Emerging Photographers.

 

Let’s start off with one of Lee’s favorites.  Number one: you can still take bad photos with a nice camera.

 

Lee:         And I know because I did it!

 

William:   We all do it, and that’s something to keep in mind.  Just because you’ve got your shiny new nice camera and maybe you’ve stepped up from taking photos with your phone or a point and shoot or something like that and you’ve got your DSLR doesn’t mean that you are guaranteed to have nice photos.  Your odds of taking nice photos are probably much better because you have more control, but the camera itself isn’t what’s going to give you a nice photo out of it.

 

Lee:         No, that’s shocking.  I thought it was quite outrageous.  You spend all this money on a nice camera and then you have to do something to help it.  I mean I expected the good camera would take the good photos.  Well, that wasn’t quite the case.

 

William:   And I’ve tested this. I put my camera down, I told it to go take some photos and it didn’t do a damn thing.

 

Lee:         Stupid camera.

 

William:   I know.  Here’s what we’re trying to get at.  Just because you’ve got a nice camera doesn’t mean that anything has really changed other than that if anything, you have to work harder for the nice pictures because you’...

Welcome to the Photo Flunky Show.  My name is William Beem, and with me is my co-host, Lee.

 

Lee:         Hi!

 

William:   Today we’re going to be talking about where you can go to get your photography information.  And that is kind of leading into a change from when I was first thinking about getting into photography.  Back when I was in high school I was pretty much guaranteed that I knew I wanted to be a photographer, and to do that I wanted to go to photography school.

 

I was looking locally here in Florida, Daytona Beach Community College had an outstanding program (it’s now Daytona State College) and Brooks Institute, which is out in California.  Both of them were just fine schools.

Reviewing, Editing and Post Processing by Lee Beem

Reviewing, editing and post processing are critical parts of the photo assignment. Once you come back with a card full of photos, it's time to pick the winners and get them ready for the article.

In this episode, Lee Beem discusses her workflow to whittle over 700 photos down to a final 15 images for her article and what post processing she used to prepare them for publication.

She also reveals how some of the images left out of the article still live on for social media and other promotional methods.

Welcome to the Photo Flunky Show, Episode number sixteen.

 

Today’s topic:  We’re going to talk about a walkthrough of assignment photography.

 

On today’s show we’re going to talk about reviewing, editing and processing your photos.

 

Hi, this is your host William Beem.

 

Hi, and I’m Lee Beem.

 

And today we’re going to continue on our discussion from episode fifteen.  If you haven’t heard that one yet, you may want to go back.  The topic is really about an assignment that Lee took on to do a review of Epcot’s Flower and Garden show and last episode we talked about all the planning to go out there and take the photos.  This time we’re going to talk about what we did with all those photos; or more likely, what she did.

 

 

Just a reminder before we get started with that discussion that we’re going to be changing the format of the show just a little bit.  As you heard, Lee is joining me now and we’re going to change this from three times per week to once a week.  We’re going to be showing it on a Wednesday.  So this is coming out on a Wednesday and our next episode will be coming out the following Wednesday.

Lee had a photography assignment to cover for a web site. We discuss how she prepared for the event with little notice, as well as her strategy for dealing with getting the shots she wanted during a crowded day with changing light.

Today’s topic:  We’re going to talk about a walkthrough of assignment photography.

OK, before we get into our topic, I’m going to announce a little bit of a change of format and schedule.  We’re going to be moving from three short episodes per week to once a week, but probably a little bit longer; about 20 minutes or so, and we’re going to start coming out on Wednesday.  So this week you’re going to have a show on Monday, you’re going to have a show on Wednesday; there’ll be nothing on Friday and then following next week, Wednesdays from then on out.

 

Alright, today I’ve got a guest.  Actually it’s my wife, Lee Beem.  Lee recently had an article to do about the Epcot Flower and Garden Festival.  It’s an annual event at Walt Disney World and she was able to make it there for the first day, so she had an assignment to write for one of our other sites – it’s called orlandolocal.com, and we wanted to go and do a review for that.  So basically I kind of wanted to do an interview with Lee over what she did to prepare for it and how she handled her...
