The I Love Kelowna Podcast is an interview-style talk show about the fabulous and fascinating people that make up our great city and the Okanagan. In-depth, intimate conversations with entrepreneurs, executives, thought leaders, creatives, and anyone who has an interesting story to tell about how they're contributing to our wonderful home. 

We've recorded over 170 episodes and there are currently 93 episodes you can listen to. We are going to take advantage of this time of social distancing and release many more episodes in the coming days and weeks.

A Successful Career in Commercial Real Estate

It was great to reconnect with Meghan O'Mara! She began her career in commercial real estate in her early 20s. Today she brings eleven years of business experience, with the past seven years as one of the top leasing agents in the Okanagan Valley. 

Since entering commercial real estate brokerage in 2011, Meghan has facilitated hundreds of transactions in excess of a half-million square feet leased and a combined value of over $70 million. She has a clear understanding of commercial real estate trends and an intimate knowledge of the BC Interior markets, coupled with an education in marketing & technology.

A Passion for Real Estate and Education.

Jason Moseley is a fan of building stuff, connecting people, and playing outside! Jason and his family moved to Kelowna 4.5 years ago with the goal of improving their lifestyle and creating the very best environment for their children. Kelowna made a lot of sense to them on many levels.  They love the size of the community, the breadth of amenities, and of course, the scenery – and the wine! 

Jason has a very diverse background, having worked as a Journalist, Ski Coach, Construction Worker, Banker, Real Estate Investor, and Public Speaker. He has also started 5 businesses! He loves new challenges, building organizations, and connecting likeminded people.  Since moving to the Okanagan, he has been fortunate to partner with some amazing people to build the Okanagan Real Estate Investment Group.  This group focuses on introducing people to Real Estate Investing, education them, and creating strong networks. 

While Jason is still heavily involved, he recently stepped down from the Board of OREIG to focus on building the Big White Freestyle Team.  As the Program Director for BWFT, it is his job to ensure they offer the very best program, facilities, and coaching possible to develop strong Freestyle Skiing athletes in the Okanagan. Freestyle Skiing has always been a passion of Jason's and he is excited to take this Club to the next level and weave it into the fabric of our community!

Tara Godwin (Tara Alex) has always pursued detail-oriented endeavours.  Her 12-year business as a custom costume and clothing designer in Winnipeg taught her to rely on her critical eye to produce the best possible results.  She is very detail oriented and her work ethic does not allow for an unfinished job. 

Since 2003 Tara has renovated multiple properties. She did all aspects of renovations including demolition and framing, full kitchen renos, full bathroom renos, electrical and plumbing, concrete excavations for new plumbing installs for bathrooms and pool equipment, drywalling, finishing (tiling both wall and floor, rolled flooring, interlocking laminate), concrete forming, retaining wall installation, and flagstone installation.

Tara was a stay at home mom until 2015, when she began her schooling to become a home inspector.  She is now in her third year in the business. She really loves what she does! We discuss how customer service is one of the most important factors in attracting, building and maintaining a faithful client base and how she strives to provide the best service possible to each of her clients.

Dr. Alana Berg, ND is originally from Alberta. She discovered at a very young age her desire to help people. This led her to a path of pre-medical training at the University of Alberta, and ultimately to the profession of Naturopathic Medicine, graduating from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in 2005. 
 
She began a full-time practice in 2006 in Kelowna BC, and embarked on developing and honing her professional skills. She has been achieved certification by the College of Naturopathic Physicians of British Columbia in: chelation, acupuncture, IV therapy, pharmacology, and ozone. As well, she has trained in neural therapy, trigger point injections, Bodytalk therapy, Neuropsychokinesiology, and several other courses along the way.

Dr. Alana and I discuss the key differences between "traditional" western medicine and natural medicine and how these two fields can actually harmonize for maximum well being. We also talk about her great book The Courageous Cure: Understanding Why You Get Sick and Revealing How You Can Heal; what motivated her to write it, and why you will greatly benefit from buying and reading it.

Kevin Bond is a jack of all trades and a master of many. This man is very driven to make the world a better place and he is championing that cause in his beautiful home of Kelowna BC. He believes in everyone. 

These ideals of a world driven by empathy started during his early childhood with the help of his grandma. He has literally faced death on numerous occasions. He died for a few minutes on an operating table in 2002, but that didn't stop him from continuing to drive his businesses and retire at 39. 

Kevin still works very hard in the community with the homeless and disenfranchised. If you were to ask him what he actually does, he would describe himself as an extremely aware Canadian political economist.

This is a fascinating, wide ranging conversation about growing up in a farming community on the prairies, love, loss, near-death experiences, gratitude, curling, and our mutual love of baseball.

Travis Martell with Martell Elite Fitness is an Edmonton, Alberta native by birth. He moved to Kelowna, British Columbia at a young age where he played hockey for the local teams from the moment he could skate. Growing up, he always heard the same thing from his coaches "you need to improve your foot speed and strength."

Looking back, he realized he needed to start his off-ice training at a younger age with the help of a trainer or knowledgeable professional in order to give himself the best chance on the ice.

The unique combination of strength, power, speed, agility, and endurance hockey players must have in order to succeed in their sport differs from any other sport. When training the cardiovascular system, more emphasis needs to be placed on the anaerobic system while still maintaining a high level of aerobic capacity. This balance between the two systems allows better recovery between each shift in hockey and a full recovery after each game.

Over the last 10+ years, Travis has worked with young athletes one-on-one, in camps (Edge of Excellence, SD23 Hockey Canada Skills Academy, and Sicamous Hockey School) and even online, to help them achieve their personal fitness goals. In 2008 he became a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength Conditioning Association (NSCA).

David Scarlatescu is an amazing young man! Born in Romania in 1998, he was a straight A student who dropped out of school after Grade 8. At the age of 16 he got a job at Nature's Fare Markets, so that he could help his mom with living expenses. 

At the age of 17, he was accepted into the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition as the youngest adult student in Canada. This was unheard of at the time for someone who was under 19 with no high school diploma. David finished his schooling 1 year later at the top of his class. 

At the age of 18 he had failed in a real estate wholesaling business, but quickly started a commercial cleaning and janitorial company which was a great success. By the age of 19 he was already into his next venture, owing and managing a restaurant. In his first year of operation, The Fig in Vernon went from $280k to over $500k in revenue. 

This is a really great conversation of how David learned valuable skills such as marketing, communications, human resources, customer service, leadership and continues to learn more by being in the trenches every day. His achievements include Vernon's Top 20 under 40, and he was a finalist for Young Entrepreneur of the Year after just 5 months in business. I am making all my daughters listen to this interview!
