  • He Got Bit by a Dog. What Happened Next Cost Him 4 Limbs.

Greg Manteufel arrived at a Wisconsin hospital with vomiting, leg pain, confusion, and dark patches spreading across his skin. He remembered no dog bite or scratch. Blood tests eventually identified Capnocytophaga canimorsus, a rare bacterium commonly found in dog and cat mouths.

The infection triggered sepsis and disseminated intravascular coagulation, or DIC. Tiny clots cut off circulation to Greg's hands and feet. Antibiotics stopped the infection, but they could not restore tissue whose blood supply had already been destroyed.

This episode follows the documented case, why the suspected saliva exposure could not be proven, how a slow-growing bacterium can challenge routine identification, and why Greg did not fit the risk profile clinicians are usually taught to expect.

    THE DIAGNOSTIC GLITCH

    • No remembered bite or scratch marked the likely route of exposure.
    • Early symptoms resembled many ordinary infections before sepsis became obvious.
    • Capnocytophaga can be slow-growing and difficult for routine systems to identify.
    • Greg was reported as otherwise healthy, outside the best-known high-risk groups.
    • The infection cleared, but the clotting damage had already become irreversible.
