  • Feeding the World with Cellular Aquaculture: Food Security and Sustainability

Ira Pastor, ideaXme life sciences ambassador and founder of Bioquark, interviews Lou Cooperhouse, President and CEO of BlueNalu.

    Ira Pastor comments:

Global demand for seafood is at an all time high, as consumers are increasingly choosing to eat an extraordinary variety of seafood products that exist worldwide. Unfortunately, our global supply for seafood cannot keep pace with this demand, as populations of marine species have halved since 1970. This is due to overfishing, illegal fishing, rising ocean temperatures, acidification, the effects of trawling, and a number of other environmental, social, and political challenges. At the same time, consumers are looking for more from their food choices. Consumers are increasingly concerned about animal welfare and the conditions in which fish are farmed and caught. In addition, they are increasingly concerned about their own personal welfare, as seafood can be a source of mercury, toxins and poisons, pathogens, viruses, and parasites, micro-particles of plastics due to plastic pollution in our ocean, and a variety of other environmental pollutants.

Using Biotechnology to Create a Sustainable Cell Based Seafood Food Resource Cellular agriculture (or aquaculture per our theme today) focuses on the production of products from cell cultures using a combination of biotechnology, tissue engineering, molecular biology, and synthetic biology to create and design new methods of producing proteins, fats, and tissues that would otherwise come from traditional agriculture or aquaculture.

Lou Cooperhouse, is President and CEO of BlueNalu, a company whose mission is to be the global leader in cellular aquaculture, providing consumers with great tasting, healthy, safe and trusted cell-based seafood products that support the sustainability and diversity of our ocean. Lou Cooperhouse With degrees in Food Science and Microbiology, both from Rutgers University, Mr. Cooperhouse is recognized as a leading global authority in food business innovation and technology commercialization, with extensive leadership experiences throughout his 35-year career in the food industry. Most recently, Mr. Cooperhouse served as CEO of Food Spectrum, LLC, where he provided a broad array of strategic consulting and business management expertise to the food industry, as well as a founder and the Executive Director of the Rutgers University Food Innovation Center (FIC), and led this program for approximately 15 years. Previously, Mr. Cooperhouse served as President & COO of F&S Produce, a leading regional supplier of fresh-cut produce and value-added refrigerated foods, and Co-Founder, President and CEO of MenuDirect Corporation, a unique health, wellness, and nutrition company, which provided meal solutions for individuals with celiac disease, diabetes, PKU and dysphagia. Earlier in his career, Mr. Cooperhouse held positions of increasing responsibility at Campbell’s Soup, ConAgra, Nestlé-funded Culinary Brands, Idle Wild Farms, and Grand Union Supermarkets in areas of business development, product development, quality assurance, and operations. In addition, Mr. Cooperhouse has considerable expertise in food safety and quality assurance systems, and has provided leadership at numerous FDA and USDA-inspected operations, and has conducted third-party audits of dozens of food companies throughout the nation. He is Certified in Preventive Controls for Human Food (issued by the Food Safety Preventive Controls Alliance), is a Certified Trainer in Hazard analysis and critical control points (issued by the International HACCP Alliance), and is also Certified as a ServSafe Food Protection Manager (issued by the American National Standards Institute).

On this episode we will hear from Mr. Cooperhouse:

About his background in the food science, safety and technology space. About the BlueNalu company. About the processes involved in creating lab grown fish meats. About the types of fish meats they are planning on commercializing first. About any technology hurdles on the route to market. • Global Sanitation Crisis Endangering the Lives of Millions

Ira Pastor, ideaXme life sciences ambassador and founder of Bioquark, interviews Cheryl D. Hicks, Executive Director and CEO at Toilet Board Coalition.

    Ira Pastor comments:

So on the last several shows, as we have spent time on the themes of health, wellness, and aging, we’ve been speaking to a broad range of experts primarily in the fields of therapeutic and preventative interventions as it pertains to the chronic degenerative diseases in the developed world. And I always find it interesting when you go to conferences nowadays focused on the topics of wellness, longevity or healthspan, somebody will always give a presentation highlighting how improvements in sanitation technically did as much, if not more, for humanity and human lifespan (doubling it), than modern medicine has done over the last century. And that’s why I find it so amazing that in 2020, an estimated 2.4 billion people around the globe, still lack access to the basic tools of improved sanitation (toilets and latrines) That represents 35% of the world’s population!

    The Global Sanitation Crisis:

One billion people on this planet still have to defecate in the open and at least 10% of the world’s population is thought to consume food irrigated by raw wastewater. An estimated 800,000 children, younger than 5 years of age, perish each year from diarrhea, cholera, dysentery, hepatitis A, typhoid and polio. The Toilet Board Coalition (TBC) is a business-led partnership and platform, which has the ambition to address the global sanitation crisis by accelerating the Sanitation Economy, a brand new marketplace for innovation, entrepreneurship and investment, to transform sanitation systems from an unaffordable public cost, to an untapped business opportunity, and deliver significant impact to business and society. TBC enables private sector engagement, connecting large and small companies, and ensuring close collaboration between private, public and non-profit sectors with the common goal to achieve United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG6), which is "universal access to sanitation." Partners in the TBC include such entities as Unilever, KimberlyClark, Firmenich, Veolia, Tata, USAID, the World Bank and Unicef. The Toilet Board Coalition also runs the Toilet Accelerator, the world’s first accelerator program dedicated to sanitation entrepreneurs in low-income markets.

    Cheryl D. Hicks:

Cheryl Hicks, Toilet Board Coalition Executive Director and CEO, is an experienced business, investment and sustainable development professional. Cheryl brings over 20 years of experience developing innovative approaches to responsible business strategies, impact investment strategies, and high performing multi-stakeholder collaborations. Before joining the TBC, Cheryl was the Sustainability Investment Partner and Head of Impact at Quadia Impact Finance in Geneva. Throughout her career, Cheryl has held several positions with sustainable development platforms, and worked with fortune 500 global companies, investors and start-ups across sectors such as healthcare, consumer goods, food, forestry, chemistry, and renewable energy. Cheryl began her career in corporate sustainability with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) in Geneva, Switzerland.

On this ideaXme episode we will hear from Cheryl:

About her background in the investment industry, and how she got interested in doing something about this major problem known as "the sanitation crisis.” About the background of the Toilet Board Coalition. About the dynamics of the circular, closed loop visions of TBC for the Sanitation Economy. About the Sanitation Economy Accelerator and technologies they invest in. About toilet technologies in space and the TBC collaboration with the European Space Agency Business Applications Group. This interview is in American English

  • A hidden pandemic in our mouths?

Ira Pastor, ideaXme life sciences ambassador, interviews Dr. Mark Wolff, Morton Amsterdam Dean, and Professor, Division of Restorative Dentistry, at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine.

Ira Pastor Comments: So as frequent listeners of the ideaXme show know, we spend a lot of time talking about the theme of "healthy aging", and the reality that aging, and related biological changes associated with aging, occur across all of the body's cells, tissues, and organs, and these changes affect all structure and function of the body, including the teeth and gums, and as such, oral health is the focus of our show today. The underlying processes of biological aging can dramatically affect oral health and many of the specific changes that occur over time in our bodies as we age (such as cells renewing at a slower rate, tissues become thinner and less elastic, bones become less dense and strong, our immune system become weaker, such that infection can occur more quickly and wound healing takes longer), can have major impact in the oral cavity (affecting tissue and bone in the mouth), as well as trickle down effects on the rest of the body.

Oral health problems in older adults include, but are not limited to: untreated tooth decay, gum disease, tooth loss, oral cancer, as well as exacerbated chronic disease associated with various co-morbid conditions and physiologic changes associated with aging (e.g., hypertension, diabetes mellitus).

    Dr. Mark Wolff:

Dr. Mark Wolff, DDS, PhD, is the Morton Amsterdam Dean, and Professor, Division of Restorative Dentistry, at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine. With a Doctor of Dental Surgery, and PhD, in Oral Biology and Pathology, Dr. Wolff helps lead the school to develop policy, set research agenda and design community treatment programs that serve the needs of a wide variety of patient populations.

Prior to joining UPenn, Dr. Wolff was Professor and Chair of the Department of Cariology and Comprehensive Care, Associate Dean for Pre-doctoral Clinical Education, and Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Relations at NYU College of dentistry, the largest dental education institution in the United States. At NYU he designed, developed, and implemented an extensive curriculum in caries risk assessment and also designed dental information systems to assist dental schools in monitoring the risk of the entire dental patient population. Dr. Wolff has completed numerous international research and oral health assessment programs and has been a lifelong advocate and dental provider for individuals with physical, intellectual, and developmental disabilities of all ages. Dr. Wolff has served as the principal or co-principal investigator on multiple bench top and clinical research projects, investigating dental caries, novel re-mineralizing agents, dental erosion, periodontal disease, dental materials, and dental hypersensitivity. Dr. Wolff has published over 100 scientific papers, text chapters, and edited multiple textbooks, lectures worldwide and is a frequent consultant to the industry and has been the principal or co-principal investigator on many industrial and National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded research programs.

On this episode we will hear from Dr. Wolff about:

His background; what interested him in the field of dental medicine, academic research, and a little bit of his path to becoming dean of one of the world's largest dental schools. Major issues in the field of geriatric dental patient care. Major issues related to the oral microbiota (microbiome) and connection to chronic disease. Future technologies for the care / reversion of dental caries.

  • The History Machine: Filtering History's Bias with Neural Networks

Amanda Christensen, ideaXme guest contributor, Marketing Manager at Cubaka and fake news and deepfake researcher, interviews Niall Donnellan, co-founder (with Cathal O'Gorman) of The History Machine Podcast, a project which uses a neural network to answer some of the "what ifs" of military history.

This interview is the first of many interviews in which ideaXme poses the question: Could neural networks be the tools of the future to remove bias from the recording of current events and hence history?

    Amanda Christensen Comments:

Fake news and media bias have been some of the defining elements of our most recent current events, from political elections to the current global crisis. However, media bias and falsehoods are far from a new phenomenon; the recording of history has always favoured those who hold the pen. Recent technological advancements, such as machine learning, neural networks and deepfakes have made it even harder to distinguish real from heavily biased, as well as "fake" news. These same technological advancements, though, could in the future be the solution to detecting and removing bias from the recording events as they happen and hence history. In looking at this now, although neural networks can correct some bias, key caveats are of course that they are only as unbiased as a consistent pattern of information fed into them. "In our case, by keeping the information consistent, we can compare accurately. It is true that a neural network can correct for bias, cut consistency is how this works". Niall Donnellan, co-founder The History Machine.

    The History Machine:

The History Machine is a neural network developed by "hobbyists" Niall Donnellan and Cathal O'Gorman designed to eliminate as much bias from military history as possible. The History Machine analyses a database of wins, losses, casualties and other variables in the history of warfare, to present a more accurate depiction of history's most famous commanders, generals, and leaders. Accuracy is of course also determined by how correct historians of the past recorded events. "We can only be as accurate as the source presented. For example, if the ancient historian Plutarch was not telling the truth, then we a analysing their lies in great details". Based on this historical information of the past, also allows them to test out hypothetical situations, pitting generals against one another to see which leader or army would reign supreme, as well as analysing fictitious armies and leaders, such as those in Game of Thrones. Together, they present their results on The History Machine Podcast.

    Niall Donnellan and Cathal O'Gorman:

Niall Donnellan holds a bachelor’s in biomedical engineering and a degree in Quality Engineering. He currently works in the biomedical sector as a Manufacturing Engineer at Cerenovus working on The History Machine Podcast alongside Cathal in their spare time.

Cathal O'Gorman also holds a bachelor’s in biomedical engineering as well as a master’s in software development, during which his thesis involved designing an AI which would determine what style and artistic movement a painting belonged to. Cathal is also the host of the Take your Data Points podcast, another podcast which uses a neural network to analyse and research data relating to the sport of hurling.

On this show we'll hear from Niall about: How he and Cathal came up with the idea for The History Machine Podcast. How the neural network works. The accuracy and degree to which his, and other neural networks, can remove bias. The potential use for neural networks in recording a less-biased version of major moments in modern history, such as the one we're living in today.

The History Machine Podcast can be found on their website, as well as on Twitter and YouTube.

  • How to Build Resilient People, Systems and Technologies: Expect the Unexpected!

Dr. Shima Beigi, Founder of Mindfulness Engineering™️ BSc,MSc,MSc,Ph.D. Resilience Scientist, Author, Yogi and ideaXme Rich Connectedness™️ ambassador interviews Francis Heylighen, Cyberneticist and Research Professor at the Free University of Brussels where he directs the trans-disciplinary research group on "Evolution, Complexity and Cognition" and the Global Brain Institute.

Francis Paul Heylighen (born 1960) is a Belgian cyberneticist investigating the emergence and evolution of intelligent organization.

He presently works as a research professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (the Dutch-speaking Free University of Brussels), where he directs the trans-disciplinary research group on "Evolution, Complexity and Cognition" and the Global Brain Institute. He is best known for his work on the Principia Cybernetica Project, his model of the Internet as a global brain, and his contributions to the theories of memetics and self-organization. He is also known, albeit to a lesser extent, for his work on gifted people and their problems.

    Dr Shima Beigi comments:

In this new episode of ideaxme Rich Connectedness™️ Podcast series, I, Dr. Shima Beigi founder of Mindfulness Engineering™️ and ideaxme Rich Connectedness connect with Professor Francis Heylighen, a Belgian cybernéticien and complexity scientist at the Dutch speaking University of Brussels (VUB).

    http://pespmc1.vub.ac.be/HEYL.html

Apart from being my mentor and colleague for the past 6 years, Professor Heylighen’s expansive publications have been a source of inspiration for many complexity scientists around the world.

    https://scholar.google.com/citations?hl=en&user=jt7BHBUAAAAJ&view_op=list_works&pagesize=100

Due to the ongoing challenge of COVID-19, similar to my other podcasts, I decided to focus this discussion on the subject of complexity and how it can provide a more interdisciplinary approach to the challenge of recovering from the coronavirus pandemic. Over the past decade, the science of complexity has began to attract the attention of many prominent thinkers, businesses, scientists, and scholars. The main reason for this keen interest stems from the overwhelming evidences that classical Newtonian view of the world is very limited in its capacity to solve complex and wicked problems. Complex and wicked problems refer to those challenges that the cause and effect of events are not linear meaning the cause and effect an event can not be traced back to a single trajectory of event(s).

These systems follow exhibit what’s called nonlinear behaviours. Non linear behaviours makes predictions extremely difficult if not impossible. In such a system, long term planning if not impossible. This in itself provides another challenge for control and managent.

Today, as COVID-19 continues to spread around the world, these unpredictability and uncertainty are even more tangible. But, what if we view these events from the perspective of a complexity scientist and cybernéticien? In this conversation, Professor Heylighen provides his point of view on our current times, offers his model of buffer challenge landscape which is inspired by the principle of Ashby Law of Requisite Variety.

    https://www.academia.edu/22638152/Cybernetic_principles_of_aging_and_rejuvenation_the_buffering-_challenging_strategy_for_life_extension

According this law, only systems that are capable of abdicating the diverse range of perturbations that enter into their inner boundaries are able to adapt and continue to evolve. I discuss these with Professor Heylighen and explore how we can integrate some of these cybernetic principles into our systems at both individual and collective levels. What makes a system resilient isn’t the planning per se, but its cognitive capacity to expect the unexpected.

  • Saving the World's Rarest Large Mammal: Professor Hildebrandt Talks of Saving the Northern White Rhino

Ira Pastor, ideaXme life sciences ambassador, interviews Prof. Dr. Thomas Bernd Hildebrandt, Head of the Department of Reproduction Management at Leibniz-IZW and Professor of Wildlife Reproduction Medicine at Freie Universität Berlin.

    Ira Pastor Comments:

The "Sixth Mass Extinction" is a term for an ongoing extinction event of species during the present Holocene epoch (in more recent times sometimes called Anthropocene) as a result of human activity. The included extinctions span numerous families of plants and animals, including mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and arthropods. With widespread degradation of highly biodiverse habitats, such as coral reefs and rain forests, as well as other areas, the current rate of extinction of species is estimated at 100 to 1,000 times higher than natural background rates. The Holocene extinction includes the disappearance of large land animals, known as mega-fauna, which comprises the large or giant animals of an area, habitat, or geological period, and among living animals, the term mega-fauna is most commonly used for the largest extant terrestrial mammals, which include elephants, giraffes, hippopotami, rhinoceroses, and large bovines.

    Dr. Thomas Bernd Hildebrandt:

Prof. Dr. Thomas Bernd Hildebrandt heads the Department of Reproduction Management at Leibniz-IZWand is Professor of Wildlife Reproduction Medicine at Freie Universität Berlin. Prof. Hildebrandt studied veterinary medicine at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, received his doctorate Summa Cum Laude from Freie Universität Berlin, and is certified as a zoo, wildlife and game veterinarian. In his specialized field, reproduction biology, Prof. Hildebrandt is one of the pioneers of assisted reproduction in large mammals, including elephants, rhinos, big cats, and panda bears. Prof. Hildebrandt is represented in a number of professional societies, is Honorary Professorial Fellow Life Sciences at Melbourne University, Research Associate of the Smithsonian Institution (National Zoological Park), Fellow of the Zoological Society of San Diego Zoo, Scientific Associate of the Taronga Conservation Society Australia, Conservation Fellow of the Zoological Society London and Veterinary Advisor for the European elephant Taxon Advisory Group.

On this episode we will hear from Prof. Hildebrandt about: His educational and career background. What the global system for "de-endangerment" looks like. How the world decides what species, of the many "highly endangered," to focus on? The general concept of “Conservation by Cellular Technologies.” The topic of neoteny (the prolongation of youth) and learnings for humans that come from mega-fauna social animal groups. What’s next in his research after saving the Northern White Rhino. His feelings about "de-extinction" work with the likes of Mammoths, Saber Tooth Cats, et cetera.

    Dr Shima Beigi comments:

In this new episode of ideaXme Rich Connectedness Podcast series, I, Dr. Shima Beigi founder of Mindfulness Engineering™️ and ideaXme Rich Connectedness™️ ambassador, connect with Miri Rodriguez, an inspiring woman working with Microsoft, a brand described by many as "one of the most "enlightened organisations in the tech industry" and whose founders are playing "a key role in attempting to fight COVID-19, to save lives and businesses".

Brand Storytelling, a newly published book explores how it is possible to strengthen brands with inspiring and lasting identities - "stories".

Due to the ongoing challenge of COVID-19, I decided to focus this interview on ways which our entrepreneur and start-up ideaXme audiences can benefit from hearing Miri's perspective on strengthening their brand stories in this time of COVID-19. So, here we explore the value of storytelling in time of crisis in leading businesses and individuals towards recovery. As COVID-19 continues to challenge the world's populations, there is a pressing need to reformulate and rethink how our human community operates.

Societies’ ability to change their behaviour critically depends on narratives. At the root of today’s manifold challenges, such as sustainability or creating a peaceful world, lie narratives which connect people. Narratives - "stories" inspire communities to think about and imagine a better world. Inspiring stories nevertheless need to have certain characteristics. Stories are not opinions, but a knowledge base often missing from today’s global conversations. Often one nation’s opinion overpowers others. A misaligned power dynamic which leads to creation of opinions that are void of "collective of humanity" or what we call “the universal human story”.

Our mission at ideaXme propels us to find anchors in the shape of individuals whose heroic voice move this human story forward™️. Join us in this conversation and find out how even in pressing times such as this can trigger new narratives. • Cytokine Storm in Covid-19 Patients: Possible Solutions

Ira Pastor, ideaXme life sciences ambassador, interviews Dr. Randy Cron, MD, PhD, Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and the Arthritis Foundation, Alabama chapter endowed chair in Pediatric Rheumatology.

    Ira Pastor Comments:

As we are a few months into the COVID-19 pandemic, a medical term we’ve been hearing mentioned quite a bit it in the press in terms of the pathophysiology of the infection, is that of Cytokine Release Syndrome (CRS) or Cytokine Storm Syndrome (CSS) is a form of systemic hyper-inflammatory response that can be triggered by a variety of factors such as infections, as well as certain drugs. CRS / CSS occurs when large numbers of white blood cells are activated and release inflammatory cytokines (which are a broad category of proteins important in cell signalling) which in turn activate yet more white blood cells, and the cycle repeats in a very dangerous and deadly cascade which can harm and kill patients via systemic hyper-inflammation, hypotensive shock, and multi-organ failure. Just a few months ago, the Springer publishing organization released a text entitled "Cytokine Storm Syndrome" - a first of its kind book to addresses all aspects of this unique disorder, from genetics, pathophysiology, and ongoing research related to clinical presentations, risk factors, and treatment.

    Dr. Randy Cron:

Today we are joined by one of the co-authors of this book, Dr. Randy Q. Cron, MD, PhD, Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and the Arthritis Foundation, Alabama chapter endowed chair in Pediatric Rheumatology. Dr. Cron is also the Director of the Division of Pediatric Rheumatology and the Pediatric Rheumatology fellowship program at Children's of Alabama, a private not-for-profit, which provides specialized medical care for ill and injured children, and is ranked among the best pediatric medical centers in the U.S. Dr. Cron received his medical degree from UCLA and a doctorate in Immunology from the University of Chicago, with Pediatric residency training at Stanford Children’s Hospital in California and Pediatric Rheumatology fellowship training at Children’s Hospital and Medical Center in Seattle. Dr. Cron is board-certified in Pediatric Rheumatology, is the past president of the Alabama Society for Rheumatic Diseases, and a member of American Academy of Pediatrics, Society for Pediatric Research, American Association of Immunologists, American College of Rheumatology and numerous other professional organizations. His major research interests include: dysregulation of CD154 protein that is primarily expressed on activated T cells in systemic lupus erythematosus; CD4 T cell host factor regulation of HIV-1 LTR transcriptional activity and latency; genetic mutations leading to defective lymphocyte cytolytic activity; diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular joint arthritis in childhood arthritides, and the diagnosis and treatment of Macrophage Activation Syndrome (MAS), a severe, potentially life-threatening, complication of several chronic rheumatic diseases of childhood, and a component of the umbrella of conditions that make up CRS/CSS.

On this episode we will hear from Dr. Cron about:

His background: he developed an interest in pediatric medicine, immunology, and the very specialized pathology of CRS/CSS. An overview of CRS/CSS and conditions under the CRS/CSS umbrella including Macrophage Activation Syndrome and Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis. Treatment modalities for CRS/CSS. The connection between CSS and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS); a type of respiratory failure characterized by rapid onset of widespread inflammation in the lungs, and responsible for many deaths in COVID-19 patients. His views on the use of the lupus drug Hydroxychloroquine in COVID-19 patients.
