Ira Pastor, ideaXme life sciences ambassador and founder of Bioquark, interviews Dr. Michael Levin, Tufts University Professor who holds the Vannevar Bush endowed Chair in the Biology Department, and who serves as both the Director of the Tufts Center for Regenerative and Developmental Biology and Director of the Allen Discovery Center at Tufts.
Ira Pastor comments:
Form is generally defined as the shape and structure of something as distinguished from the materials that it's constructed from, and the branch of biology that deals with the form of living organisms, and with the relationships between their structures, is known as morphology. Every level of the human body requires complex form control mechanisms to be functional throughout a lifetime, across the body's many hierarchies (at the levels of DNA, cells, tissues, organs, limbs, and body segments), in order to accomplish a range of biologic outputs from embryogenesis, to growth, repair and regeneration, to preventing everything from tumor formation to transitions into a range of degenerative disease, to even neuro-plasticity in the human brain. Yet, when it comes to topics like shape, size, polarity, position, where the properties and characteristics of the component parts of a system and the reciprocal interplay of all the components on each across these hierarchies are required, researchers need to go well beyond studying an individual gene or protein or stem cell, to a range of fascinating top-down control processes which control complex biological morphology.
Today, we have the honor of being joined by a true thought leader of this space, Dr. Michael Levin, Tufts University Professor who holds the Vannevar Bush endowed Chair in the Biology Department, and who serves as both the Director of the Tufts Center for Regenerative and Developmental Biology and Director of the Allen Discovery Center at Tufts.
Dr. Levin Researches the Utilization of Bio-electricity for Regeneration:
Dr. Levin's group's focus is on understanding the biophysical mechanisms that implement decision-making during complex pattern regulation and harnessing endogenous bioelectric dynamics toward rational control of growth and form. Dr. Levin's lab current focus: • Understanding how somatic cells form bioelectrical networks for storing and recalling pattern memories that guide morphogenesis. • Creating next-generation AI tools for helping scientists understand top-down control of pattern regulation (a new bioinformatics of shape). • Using these insights to enable new capabilities in regenerative medicine and engineering. Dr. Levin's recent honors include the Scientist of Vision award and the Distinguished Scholar Award.
On this episode we will hear from Dr. Levin about:
His background and how he became interested in computer science, biology, and the extremely frontier science space of biological morphology control. The introductory concept of a "Morphogenetic Field." An introduction to the theme of "Developmental Bioelectricity" which refers to the regulation of cell, tissue, and organ-level patterning and behavior as the result of endogenous electrically-mediated signaling. A general theme of the ability of morphogenetic fields and developmental bio-electricity to organize in/out required cells, as well as modify the diseased phenotype, as seen in his experiments in "normalizing" cancer. A general theme of the ability of morphogenetic fields and developmental bioelectricity to accomplish complex regeneration. His views on developmental bioelectricity modulating drugs versus using electroceuticals. His model of "Variational Free-Energy Minimization" as a way for human bodies to store complex pattern information. His work in "non-CNS" information processing, storage, and cognition - such as in aneural organisms which do not possess brains, in non-neural human tissues, and in single cell organisms that agglomerate to form multi-cellular structures, like slime moulds. His experiences in fundraising for frontier sciences, such as with The Paul G. Allen Frontiers Group (the late Microsoft co-founder) whose mission is to "uncover and make visible the emerging frontiers of science, identifying pioneering explorers to create new knowledge, and produce important solutions that make the world better."

Karen Potter, Director of Sustainability Hub and ideaXme sustainability ambassador interviews Christoph Promberger, M.Sc., Executive Director Foundation Conservation Carpathia (FCC).
Karen Potter comments:
In 2009, the Foundation Conservation Carpathia was founded by a dozen international philanthropists and conservationists with the goal to stop illegal logging and to protect a significant surface of Carpathian forests to form a completely protected area. The FCC was founded in response to the restitution of formerly nationalised forests to private citizens in Romania. This process triggered massive clear-cuts and thousands of hectares of forests were illegally logged, posing a severe threat to the integrity of the Carpathian ecosystem. Wilderness is disappearing globally at an alarming rate, less than 2% of Europe's surface is still in its original state and the Carpathian Mountains form some of the largest contiguous forests on the continent with the highest percentage of still virgin woodlands; they contain an extraordinarily high number of species.
Karen is a passionate environment and sustainability campaigner leading Government and Parliamentary efforts to promote Net Zero policy solutions as well as lead on COP26, business, community and civic action. She is a project development specialist with extensive experience in designing and delivering new initiatives to promote sustainability, social responsibility, smart energy, the Green Recovery and clean tech investment. She is highly experienced in government, NGO and public sector communications, building and managing senior stakeholder relations and media engagement.
Christoph Shares His Journey of Managing the Yellowstone Park of Europe:
In this interview, Christoph shares his journey from local conservationist to head of the largest conservation project in Romania. Christoph and his wife Barbara started their efforts to protect the Carpathia Mountains against illegal logging and poaching. Romania was losing national forest on a daily basis as logging corruption was rampant. Christoph and Barbara became inspired to fight corruption at the highest level and developed an international network of support which enabled them to purchase the land and protect the habitat. Christoph, Barbara and a team of experts now manage an area they have dubbed the Yellowstone of Europe.

Ira Pastor, ideaXme life sciences ambassador and founder of Bioquark, interviews Dr. Debra Houry, MD, MPH, the Director of the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) at the U.S. CDC.
Ira Pastor comments:
On the U.S. Center's for Disease Control (CDC) "Ten Leading Causes of Death" list, right beneath the two major categories of heart disease and cancer, there is a category called "Unintentional Injuries" which cumulatively took the lives of over 167,000 Americans in 2018. This category consists of a variety of subcategories such as poisoning, traffic accidents, falls, suffocation, drownings, and fire, just to name a few.
When one goes to visit a parallel list, the "Ten Leading Causes of Non-Fatal Emergency Department Visits" (a non-fatal injury defined as bodily harm resulting from severe exposure to an external force or substance, including mechanical, thermal, electrical, chemical, or radiant, or a submersion), the numbers go through the proverbial roof, with over 25 million cases reported in the U.S. alone in 2018, with combined direct and indirect costs approaching ¾ Trillion dollars per year. Globally these numbers are equally staggering.
Preventing Injury, Violence and Fatalities:
Dr. Debra Houry, MD, MPH, is the Director of the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) at the U.S. CDC. In this role, Dr. Houry leads innovative research and science-based programs to prevent injuries and violence and to reduce their consequences. Prior to joining CDC, Dr. Houry previously served as Vice-Chair and Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine and as Associate Professor in the Departments of Behavioral Science and Health Education and in Environmental Health at the Rollins School of Public Health. Dr. Houry also served as an Attending Physician at Emory University Hospital and Grady Memorial Hospital and as the Director of Emory Center for Injury Control. Her prior research has focused on injury and violence prevention in addition to the interface between emergency medicine and public health, and the utility of preventative health interventions and screening for high-risk health behaviors. Dr. Houry has received several national awards for her work in the field of injury and violence prevention. She was recently elected as a member of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM), received the first Linda Saltzman Memorial Intimate Partner Violence Researcher Award from the Institute on Violence, Abuse, and Trauma, and the Academy of Women in Academic Emergency Medicine's Researcher Award. She is past president of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, the Society for Advancement of Violence and Injury Research, and Emory University Senate. Dr. Houry has served on numerous other boards and committees within the field of injury and violence prevention. Dr. Houry has authored more than 90 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters on injury prevention and violence. Dr. Houry received her MD and MPH degrees from Tulane University and completed her residency training in emergency medicine at Denver Health Medical Center.
On this episode we will hear from Dr. Houry about:
Her background and how she developed an interest in science, medicine and emergency medicine, and her journey towards her leadership role at U.S. CDC. A general discussion surrounding the "pandemic scale" of injury, both intentional and unintentional, both fatal and non-fatal, and the structures set up at CDC to address these amazing prevalence figures. The CDC's role in combating the opioid epidemic. The CDC's role in combating Unintentional Falls (representing 8+ million of the above-mentioned Nonfatal Emergency Department Visits) and some discussion related to the technological themes of "aging in place" and "smart home care" for the elderly that can help reduce these cases. She will also discuss the CDC's role in combating Sexual Violence and Child Abuse and combating U.S. Gun Violence.

Crises Are Times for TransformationWe've reached a global tipping point. "Unless we take the action necessary and we build in a greener and more sustainable and more inclusive way, we will end up having more and more pandemics and more and more disasters," urges Prince Charles while discussing The Great Reset.
In the last 6 months the Covid-19 pandemic has irrevocably changed the way we live. Across the world it has resulted in millions of deaths, mass unemployment and job uncertainty. The air we breathe has cleared. Blue skies watch above as millions abandon their cars to stay home and protect themselves and others.
Cycle lanes have opened up to transform city life. We've connected with many more people over the internet, conversely living physically more apart. Pressured humans are forced to think more creatively; to survive, invent and change. It is the rocky road of the new normal.
The New NormalThere's no doubt that we are being compelled to think better, learn more about the rapidly changing world around us. This time has made us question the truth, question ourselves. We evaluate our politicians with new clarity. Moreover, realise the importance of our scientists not just as academics but as lifesavers.
It is a watershed moment, a reminder of the critical importance of lifelong learning, the impact our choices make, the brands we buy, the experience we have, the politicians we select.
The Great Reset to Address World ChallengesHistoric flaws in our society are also being revisited with greater intensity. Change in our circumstances is pressuring society. We are seeing our old flaws and indolence with renewed clarity. Racism is no longer acceptable. And people are on the march. Black Lives Matter protestors across the world are demanding change!
Climate Change and The Great ResetAll of this and of course there remains the need to act on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, climate change the most pressing. The climate catastrophe is reaching its climax, with experts predicting that we only have six months to save the planet. Widespread civil disobedience is proving that people are no longer willing to tolerate an imbalance in society.
The Great Reset, initiated by The World Economic Forum in partnership with Prince Charles is calling for a reset of capitalism to create a greener, smarter and fairer world, led by The West that focuses on the 'interdependence of all living things.'
This will be spearheaded by stakeholder capitalism, centred on serving the interests of a business's stakeholders such as the customers, suppliers, employees, shareholders and local communities. In short, the Reset works towards world governments creating a 'stakeholder economy,' as well as implementing reforms that promote more equal outcomes as well as utilising the Fourth Industrial Revolution and tech innovation for public good, such as addressing health and social issues.
Published at the start of June, the World Economic Forum's objective is to create a global system that ensures health, education and care services will not be underfunded again. The Great Reset will be discussed at the World Economic Forum summit in January 2021.
Efe Ezekiel Is an Award-Winning Youth MentorThe Great Reset means that we have a lot of work to do. We need to prepare our children for what is coming next.
Efe Ezekiel created her youth mentoring company, Ushine Ishine in 2009 aiming to assist and awaken aspirations in young people of all ages. Efe's mission to empower the youth has led her to work with schools, colleges, universities, corporations and charities as well as delivering workshops that endeavour to positively transform the mindset of young people.
In 2018, Efe received a British Empire Medal (BEM) for her service to young people. She has been featured in The Financial Times for her work with working-class boys and assisting them in acquiring various life skills. Efe believes that the younger generation has a completely new perspective to offer society and there has never been a time that young people haven't been told to be quiet.
A Call for Institutional ChangeA key point of The Great Reset is addressing the ever-growing gap between the rich and the poor. US senators have been accused of coronavirus insider trading in America and the super-rich have seen their wealth rise by billions during the pandemic. This only highlights how this crisis has actually strengthened this gap. As much as we are seeing unfair racial disparities, there are obvious disparities with class.
The Black Lives Matters protests, in particular, have signalled need for institutional change. In Minneapolis, nine members of the city council have vowed to dismantle the city's police department and replace it with a new community-based system of public safety. A big part of the 'defund the police' campaign is about allocating those funds to education.
What Does Youth Activism Look Like?Millennials have lived through two recessions at two pivotal points in their lives and Gen Z are graduating during this crisis, facing much smaller employment opportunities than the previous generations. Trust in governments and media is eroding as people question where the oligarchs in charge have steered society thus far.
This deterioration of trust has caused a wave of youth activism fuelled by the internet. From calling out and destroying unethical companies on social media to spreading news of protests online. The youth aren't waiting to inherit a world given to them and instead are taking the future into their own hands.
On this show Efe Ezekiel will talk about:How the lockdown has exasperated mental health and wellbeing issues for some young people and the importance of getting children back into school and routine. She will discuss how all young people can benefit from mentorship, the value of economic education, putting Black history on the curriculum and why she should be at the next World Economic Forum summit in 2021.

Ira Pastor, ideaXme life sciences ambassador, interviews Chris Lunt, Chief Technology Officer of the All of Us Research Program run by the U.S. National Institutes of Health.
Ira Pastor Comments Precision medicine refers to the tailoring of medical treatments to the individual characteristics of each patient and away from the predominant "one-size-fits-all" approach of the last century, with the ability to classify individuals into sub-populations that differ in their susceptibility to a particular disease, the biology or prognosis of those diseases they may develop and their response to a specific treatment. Preventive or therapeutic interventions can then be concentrated on those who will benefit, sparing expense and side effects for those who will not. To make precision medicine a reality, requires extremely large and diverse patient data sets, and the ability to pull actionable information from these data sets. All of Us The All of Us Research Program (previously known as the Precision Medicine Initiative Cohort Program) is a research program run by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and created in 2015 during the presidency of Barack Obama with $130 million in initial funding that aims to make advances in tailoring medical care to the individual. The mission of All of Us is to accelerate health and medical breakthroughs, enabling individualized prevention, treatment and care. The project aims to collect genetic, lifestyle, environmental, and metabolomic data, from one million volunteers, over the course of their lifespans, to accelerate research and improve health outcomes, including (but not limited to) information about personal lifestyle and environment, electronic health records, bio-samples (blood, urine, etc), genomic data, physical measurements, data gathered by wearable devices (Fitbit) and smart phones, and clinical trial data.
Chris Lunt:
Today we have the honor of being joined on ideaXme by Chris Lunt, a veteran technology executive with experience in Silicon Valley and the federal government, and current Chief Technology Officer for the NIH All of Us Research Program. In his CTO role, Chris leads the efforts to build an engagement and digital data platform intended to enable thousands of studies to be performed on the data, creates partnerships nationwide to develop technologies that securely gather and integrate that data into for broad research use, and develops analytic approaches and visualization methods that allow researchers of many types to explore and understand the All of Us data set. Chris joins the NIH from Get Insured, where he served as the vice president of government solutions for the past 4 years. There he worked with the federal government, states, and the vendor community to improve health insurance shopping and enrolment systems. Previously, Chris worked as an HHS entrepreneur. He has also served as the Vice President of engineering at Readyforce, the Chief Executive Officer of Nombray, the founder and Vice President of engineering at Wisdom Ark, and the senior director of engineering at Friendster.
On this ideaXme episode we will hear from Chris about: His background; how he became interested in information technology, search engine development, social network development, and ultimately arrived at the leadership of this "mega project" integrating info-tech and healthcare. The general structure of the NIH All of Us Research Program. The data collection process and data use process of the NIH All of Us Research Program. Data privacy process of the NIH All of Us Research Program. The implications for advances in precision medicine learnings to lead towards more "personalized medicine" (i.e. treatments and preventions developed uniquely for each individual). His future visions on "what it means to be human in the coming decades" and transhumanism.

Ira Pastor, ideaXme life sciences ambassador, interviews Dr. Wei-Wu He, Ph.D, Executive Chairman of Human Longevity Inc (HLI).
Ira Pastor Comments:
The US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) calls chronic degenerative disease "the public health challenge of the 21st Century," especially as 75% of our healthcare spending is on people with chronic degenerative conditions, which are the leading causes of death and disability. Preventative healthcare consists of measures taken for chronic disease prevention. Disease and disability are affected by numerous factors (including the environment, genetic predisposition, disease causative agents, and lifestyle choices), are dynamic processes which begin before individuals realize they are affected, and if we could intervene earlier, we could have significant impact not only on the deaths that could have been prevented, but also the lifelong disability, compromised quality of life, and burgeoning healthcare costs.
Dr. Wei-Wu He:
Dr. Wei-Wu He, Ph.D has been serving as the Executive Chairman of Human Longevity Inc (HLI), a company merging extensive amounts of human genotype and phenotype data with machine learning so that it can help develop new ways to fight and prevent diseases associated with aging), since July 2019. Dr. He received his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Baylor College of Medicine and received an M.B.A. degree from the Wharton School at University of Pennsylvania. Prior to HLI, Dr. He was the CEO of OriGene Technologies, Inc. a company founded as a research tool enterprise focused on the creation of the largest commercial collection of full-length human cDNAs which helps develop products for pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and academic research, and he remains the chairman of the board of directors.
