Ira Pastor, ideaXme life sciences ambassador and founder of Bioquark interviews Dr Vitaly Vanchurin, PhD, Associate Professor, Theoretical Physics and Cosmology, Swenson College of Science and Engineering, at the University of Minnesota (UMN).
The Multiverse, Cosmological Neural Networks and "Space Noodles"
Dr Vanchurin's big questions and the tools we need to answer them:
"What is the origin of our Universe? What determines our vacuum and the cosmological constant that is responsible for the observed accelerated expansion of space? What determines the onset of structure formation and the birth of galaxies in our Universe? Our innate curiosity about our beginnings has been, since time immemorial, and still is, at the heart of every human being. This age old question of our origin can now be addressed by applying the scientific method".
Ira Pastor comments:
Today, we have a really exciting thought leader joining us on ideaXme who spends his time thinking about really BIG questions – Questions like: what is the origin of our Universe? What's behind the cosmological constant (in Albert Einstein's field equations of general relativity) that is responsible accelerated expansion of space? What determines the onset of structure formation and the birth of galaxies in our Universe? And many other fascinating topics.
Theoretical Physics and Cosmology
Dr. Vitaly Vanchurin, is an Associate Professor, Theoretical Physics and Cosmology, Swenson College of Science and Engineering, at the University of Minnesota (UMN). Dr. Vanchurin has both a Masters, and Ph.D. in Physics, from Tufts Institute of Cosmology, and did his dissertation on the evolution of cosmic strings. Dr Vanchurin currently spends his time focused on a variety of themes including: cosmic inflation, multiverse cosmology, string theory landscapes, multi-dimensional fluids, gravitational waves, light propagation throughout the universe, and other quite esoteric concepts. Most recently Dr. Vanchurin has been in the scientific press quite a bit regarding a fascinating new theory on "cosmological neural networks".
On this episode we will hear from Dr. Vanchurin about:
- His background - how he developed his interest in science, in theoretical physics, and in cosmology - His current research interests and programs at UMN - A discussion of his most recent research / theories in the area of "cosmological neural networks" and novel ideas surrounding machine learning - His views on the connection of his theories to those in the field of quantum biology (as well as thoughts on consciousness) - His work on multiverse theories and paradoxes - And of course "Space Noodles"

Ira Pastor, ideaXme life sciences ambassador, interviews Rick Bente, MSc, MBA, BS, CEO of Seventh Sense Biosystems.
Ira Pastor Comments:
Getting blood drawn is not a fun activity for many. It can be scary for some (especially if you have children); it can be painful for others (especially where frequent blood draws are required). Studies show that a remarkable 20% of the population has some degree of fear of needles or injections, and 10% within that number suffer from what is known as Trypanophobia (a psychological term for people with an extreme fear of medical procedures involving injections or hypodermic needles), who on top of their anxiety, completely avoid necessary tests and treatment. In addition to this, it is estimated that needles injure healthcare workers more than 2 million times a year in accidents, with potentially dangerous and deadly outcomes. Drawing blood is likely the most common invasive medical procedure, with an estimated half a billion a year conducted in U.S. hospitals alone, and two to three times this number across all hospitals worldwide annually. On top of that, millions of patients have to prick their fingers daily, multiple times a day, and experience pain each time.
Seventh Sense Biosystems:
Seventh Sense Biosystems is a company that has designed and developed, the world's first push-button blood collection device, called TAP, which aims to make the process simple, convenient, and virtually painless. As $50 billion is spent annually on diagnostics, combined with the fact that consumers are demanding more "quality of life" centric products from the healthcare system, Seventh Sense Biosystems is aiming to create a new standard for blood collection that increases patient compliance with testing orders, leading to faster diagnoses and better outcomes. Seventh Sense Biosystems was actually founded by one of ideaXme's previous guests: chemical engineer, scientist, entrepreneur, and inventor extraodinaire, Dr. Robert Langer, from MIT.
Rick Bente:
Today, we are joined by Mr. Rick Bente, CEO of Seventh Sense Biosystems. Mr. Bente joined Seventh Sense Biosystems in 2019 bringing a strong background in the design, development, and commercialization of disruptive medical devices. With over 15 years of experience, and more than 50 granted US Patents in the wearable medical device space, he has held a range of leadership roles in R&D, Marketing, and Business Development. Mr. Bente most recently held the role of Vice President of Strategic Alliances in Business Development at Insulet Corporation, where he led strategic partnering and collaborations for the world's largest wearable insulin pump company. Before joining Insulet he spent six years at Unilife establishing and scaling the business of novel pre-filled wearable injectors for pharmaceutical customers and 8 years at Medtronic Diabetes designing, developing, and commercializing insulin pumps. Mr. Bente received a BS in Engineering from Harvey Mudd College, an MS in Mechanical Engineering from UCLA, and an MBA from UCLA's Anderson School of Management. On this episode we will hear from Mr. Bente about: His background - how he developed an interest in mechanical engineering and a bit of his path through the bio-medical device segment. The Seventh Sense Biosystems Story including it's founders, investors, mission, and goals. A market overview per "next generation" blood collection technologies with a focus on the TAP technology. A discussion of tele-health, remote diagnostics, and other opportunities related to the future of such tools in the smart home / smart home care setting - with a focus on Covid-19. Future ideas / Potential "combinatorial" applications with other diagnostic tools and potential consumer applications, such as personalized nutrition and home based genetic analysis. A discussion of mentors and influencers over Rick's career.

In recent years we have seen the move away from 'politics as usual'. Non-traditional figures have entered the political arena to disrupt the typical entrenched narratives. The election and worldwide popularity of Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand Prime Minister just one example of a new kind of leader who prioritises national wellbeing and happiness in the belief that everything else will follow.
Brigadier General (Retired) Dr. Loree Sutton Next Mayor of New York City?
Brigadier General Dr. Loree Sutton, ex-army general, physician, LGBTQ, mental healthcare advocate, is a further example of a leader who attempts to bridge the gap between people and focus on wellbeing. She is a candidate who is bringing a centrist, holistic, "quality-of-life" based approach to rejuvenating and re-inventing one of the world's major financial, technological, and cultural capitals, New York City. https://loreeformayor.nyc @NYC Mayor's Office

Ira Pastor, ideaXme life sciences ambassador, interviews Mr. Evgeni Borisov, CEO and Co-founder of Vimana Global Inc.
Ira Pastor Comments:
A flying car is a type of personal air vehicle, or "road able" aircraft, that provides door-to-door transportation by both ground and air, and was a popular theme in fantasy and science fiction stories throughout the early 20th century. One of the first debuts of a flying car was that of Henry Ford, back in 1926, when he displayed an experimental single-seat airplane. There were a lot of attempts over the 20th century, but activity has ramped up significantly in the early 21st century, and several groups have brought us close to the true flying car ideal: a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft that can hover, take off, and land vertically.
Vimana Global Founded in 2015,Vimana Global Inc.(named after the mythological flying palaces or chariots described in Hindu texts and Sanskrit epics) is developing a hybrid-electric vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) Autonomous Aerial Vehicle (AAV). These Autonomous Aerial Vehicles are intended to address traffic congestion in urban areas by using airspace to move cargo throughout a city, allow first responders a way to get to a location quickly, and ultimately transport commuters. Vimana's AAVs will feature automatic compensation for adverse weather, coordinated flight paths with other AAVs, and the ability to detect objects. The design will use modular construction so that the parts can be shipped to dense urban areas and assembled on the spot where the AAVs are intended to be used. Evgeni Borisov Mr. Evgeni Borisov, is the CEO and Co-founder of Vimana Global Inc., and has more than seventeen years of corporate executive experience, including executive work at Toshiba and other deep tech companies. Mr. Borisov leads Vimana's vision for an Autonomous Dynamic Airspace System global roll-out for transportation of both cargo and passengers. The "Airspace-as-a-Service" infrastructure VIMANA is developing makes all aerial vehicles communicate via a proprietary protocol based on distributed UAS Traffic Management (D-UTM) that enables low-altitude airspace to be used globally as a novel transportation infrastructure and transaction network. Mr. Borisov obtained degrees economic and technical sciences from The Hague University of Applied Sciences, Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, and Ukhta State Oil & Gas University.
On this episode with will hear from Mr. Borisov about: His background, how he conceived of this unique project and it's long-term vision. About Vimana Global Inc., including the founders, idea, mission, and goals. A market overview for Autonomous Aerial Vehicles. Current Autonomous Dynamic Airspace System pilot programs in Russia, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and Switzerland. Next steps, corporate partnerships, and investment plans.

Ira Pastor, ideaXme life sciences ambassador interviews Shelley Lyford President and Chief Executive Officer of West Health, the Gary and Mary West Foundation, and the West Health Institute.
Growth in Population of Weak and Vulnerable
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the world is on the brink of a demographic milestone. Since the beginning of recorded history, young children have outnumbered their elders. In about 5 years' time, the number of people aged 65 or older will outnumber children under age 5. Driven by falling fertility rates and remarkable increases in life expectancy, population aging will continue, and even accelerate. The number of people aged 65 or older is projected to grow from an estimated 524 million in 2010 to nearly 1.5 billion in 2050, with most of the increase in developing countries.
Impact of Aging Population
As these trends occur, key questions arise:
- Will population aging be accompanied by a longer period of good health, a sustained sense of well-being, and extended periods of social engagement and productivity, or will it be associated with more illness, disability, and dependency?
- How will aging affect health care and social costs?
- Are these futures inevitable, or can we act to establish a physical and social infrastructure that might foster better health and wellbeing in older age?
- How will population aging play out differently for low-income countries that will age faster than their counterparts have, but before they become industrialized and wealthy?
These are important questions which require answers, and sooner than later.
Billionaire Philanthropists Gary and Mary West
For Gary and Mary West, what started as an entrepreneurial journey in 1978, when they co-founded a small telemarketing company in the garage of their house in Omaha, Nebraska, turned into the multi-billion $$ American telecommunications company / success story, the West Corporation, employing close to 36,000 people
As wonderful an entrepreneurial success story as that was, what happened next is an equally fascinating story, where this amazing couple has taken major parts of their fortune, spending hundreds of millions of dollars in supporting causes, including, but not limited to, senior citizen wellness and cutting the health care costs for the elderly.
Shelly Lyford, West Health and Gary West Foundation
Shelley Lyford is President and Chief Executive Officer of West Health, the Gary and Mary West Foundation, and the West Health Institute.
Solely funded by the philanthropy of Gary and Mary West, West Health is a family of non-profit, nonpartisan organizations dedicated to lowering healthcare costs to enable seniors to successfully "age in place" with access to high-quality, affordable health and support services that preserve and protect their dignity, quality of life, and independence.
With a master's degree in international relations and political economics from the University of San Diego, Ms. Lyford has played a critical role in establishing the Gary and Mary West Foundation in 2006, and under her leadership, has to date rewarded grants totalling more than $223 million for applied medical research, policy initiatives and community support and social services for seniors and their caregivers.
Ms. Lyford also leads the Gary and Mary West Health Institute as it conducts research on a wide range of healthcare issues affecting seniors and their families.
Ms. Lyford has spearheaded the development of innovative healthcare delivery ecosystems that serve as national care models of excellence, including the Gary and Mary West Senior Emergency Care Unit at University of California, San Diego Health, California's first nationally-accredited senior-specific emergency department, and the Gary and Mary West PACE organization in north San Diego, a set of gold standard programs, which help seniors age in place, rather than in a nursing home. Additionally, she oversaw the development of the first of its kind, non-profit Gary and Mary West Senior Dental Center to ensure low-income seniors have access to high-quality, affordable dental care integrated with health and wellness services.
Ms Lyford has been involved in setting up many of the organization's research initiatives and collaborations including those with the American College of Emergency Physicians, the American Geriatrics Society, Brown University, Dartmouth-Hitchcock, Duke University, Meals on Wheels America, Mount Sinai Health System, UC San Diego Health and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
In 2019, Ms. Lyford was appointed for a three-year term as a commissioner on the California Commission on Aging, advising the state's governor and legislature, along with federal, state and local agencies, on issues, policies, and regulations that affect California's seniors, and subsequently appointed to California's Master Plan for Aging Stakeholder Advisory Committee.
Ms. Lyford also serves as vice-chair of the board of directors for CivicaRx, a not-for-profit generic drug company helping patients by addressing shortages and lowering the high prices of lifesaving medications.
Prior to her work with Gary and Mary West, Ms. Lyford was a director at the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice at the University of San Diego. She currently sits on the Executive Committee of Grantmakers in Aging.
On this episode of ideaXme we will hear from Ms. Lyford about:
- Her background and fascinating path from growing up on a dairy farm in Vermont to running the West Health network of organizations
- The Gary and Mary West story and why they developed their charitable focus on seniors and aging

Ira Pastor, ideaXme life sciences ambassador and founder of Bioquark interviews Matthew Richardson a Canadian author "Threatened and Recently extinct Vertebrates of the World", primatologist and conservationist.
"My forthcoming book, Threatened and Recently-extinct Vertebrates of the World, required me to assess and place some 15,000 species and subspecies within an updated biogeographic framework. I also had to coin common names for more than 5,000 of them; figure out an entirely new system of ecoregions based on elevation to nest within my "realms and regions." find a way to standardize language across the globe in a way that would be mostly acceptable to everyone; and somehow make it interesting for the reader. It is twice the length of "War and Peace." I've gone through three publishers, it took me ten years to write, and I've received zero funding in the process" Matthew Richardson.
Ira Pastor comments:
He began his professional career as a writer of historical non-fiction, although for the past several years he has mainly worked on academic projects related to wildlife conservation. In 2001 he published "The Royal Book of Lists: An Irreverent Romp Through Royal History from Alfred the Great to Prince William." For much of the next decade he worked as a primatologist and taxonomist for the U.S.-based NGO Conservation International, co-authoring various books and academic papers. Notable among these were Lemurs of Madagascar (book) and the massive primate volume to the Handbook of the Mammals of the World series (for which he also produced all the maps). He also lived and worked, for a time, at the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust on the island of Jersey in the Channel Islands, named after British naturalist, zookeeper, conservationist, author, and television presenter, Gerald Durrell. In addition to his writing and editing activities, he has consulted with scientists the world over on questions of conservation and taxonomy, helped to catalog the Royal Ontario Museum's primatology collection, gave lectures, and served as an active member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Species Survival Commission Primate Specialist Group. He currently has a new book in press entitled "Threatened and Recently-extinct Vertebrates of the World: A Biogeographic Approach" (quote from Matthew above).
On this ideaXme episode we will hear from Matthew about:
-His background and how he developed a long standing interest in conservation and taxonomy -An introduction to the topic and importance of biogeography studies within conservation -Interesting learnings and trends in his biogeographic studies -The need to reform the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species -The need to focus on wildlife conservation via protecting areas of strategic, biogeographic importance This interview text is in American English.
