Amanda Christensen, ideaXme contributor, socio-digital researcher and Marketing Manager at Cubaka, interviews Simon Anholt, academic, policy advisor, founder of The Good Country and author The Good Country Equation: How We Can Repair the World in One Generation.
Amanda Christensen Comments:
The Information Age has quite literally brought the world to our fingertips, at a moment's notice we're now able to tap into major global events, like the U.S. election, Brexit negotiations, protests in Poland, and COVID vaccines being trialed and approved by numerous countries. Not only are we able to witness the news the world over, we're able to take part in the conversation, transforming local and national news and issues into global movements, as we've been seen with the likes of Greta Thunberg and the sustainability movement, Black Lives Matter, and The Facebook Ad Boycott.
The digital era has given us a wealth of insight into national events around the world, from global leaders to news broadcasters to first-hand accounts shared to social media. Armed with this data, how do we both perceive and define what is a "good" country, and how do behavioural shifts like rapid digitisation and the concept of global "netizens" affect this perception?
Simon Anholt:
The Good Country Today I have the pleasure of being joined by political scientist, policy advisor and Founder of The Good Country, Simon Anholt. Anholt has spent the past twenty years advising the Presidents, Prime Ministers, monarchs and governments of fifty-six countries, helping them to engage more productively and imaginatively with the international community. In 2014, he started the Good Country Index, a system which ranks how much a country is contributing to the greater global good, factored against a number of socioeconomic and cultural benchmarks.
Simon has written six books about countries, their brands and their role in the world. His most recent book, The Good Country Equation: How We Can Repair the World in One Generation, explores how his findings in both his research and professional experience can be used to ensure we equip the next generation with the tools to repair and improve the world.
On this episode you'll hear from Simon Anholt about: His background, and his journey from advertising to advising world leaders. His research project, The Good Country Index, and The Good Generation project. His latest book, The Good Country Equation: How We Can Repair the World in One Generation, and if we can indeed repair the world in one generation. His Nations Brands Index project, and an overview of the concept of nations as brands. His thoughts on if rapid digitisation is altering the perception of borders and nations as a whole.

Ali Jawad: Christian, what inspired you to write the book?
Dr Christian Busch: I used to be an extremely rebellious teenager. I was kicked out of school. I channeled my energy in very questionable ways. Then I turned 18. I got my first car. Unsurprisingly, my driving style mirrored my approach to life. One day that all changed. I had a car crash. It almost killed me. This event acted as a trigger to set me on a journey in search of meaning. As part of that search, I read Viktor Frankl's wonderful book Man's Search for Meaning, which is all about the idea that you can find meaning even in the most dire of situations......

Ira Pastor, ideaXme life sciences ambassador and founder of Bioquark interviews Dr. Frank D. Marks, MS, ScD, Director of Hurricane Research Division, at NOAA.
Ira Pastor comments:
Weather and climate disasters affect the world's population.
The total approximate cost of damages from weather and climate disasters in the U.S. alone from 1980 to 2019, is over $1.75 trillion, and a major component of that damage results from hurricanes. Few things in nature can compare to the destructive force of a hurricane. Called the "Greatest Storm On Earth", a hurricane is capable of annihilating coastal areas with sustained winds of 155 miles per hour or higher, intense areas of rainfall, and a storm surge. In fact, during it's life cycle a hurricane can expend as much energy as 10,000 nuclear bombs! The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is an American scientific agency, within the United States Department of Commerce, that focuses on the conditions of the oceans, major waterways, and the atmosphere. NOAA warns of dangerous weather, charts seas, guides the use and protection of ocean and coastal resources, and conducts research to provide the understanding and improve stewardship of the environment.
Dr. Frank D. Marks, is Director of Hurricane Research Division, at NOAA: Dr. Marks is a recognized expert in tropical cyclones and is the leader of the NOAA tropical cyclone research efforts as the research lead of NOAA is Hurricane Forecast Improvement Project (HFIP) and the director of the Hurricane Research Division of NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorology Laboratory. Dr. Marks also serves as co-lead of the NOAA Office of the Federal Coordinator for Meteorological Services and Supporting Research (OFCM) Working Group for Tropical Cyclone Research (WG/TCR).
His research interests include analyzing meteorological remote sensing (e.g., microwave radar and radiometer) and numerical model data sets, particularly in tropical cyclones and mesoscale convective systems to understand the storm kinematic and precipitation structure. Besides his role within NOAA Dr. Marks is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Meteorology and Physical Oceanography at the University of Miami, as well as a Fellow of the Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School for Marine and Atmospheric Sciences. Dr. Marks received a B.S. in Meteorology from Belknap College (1973) and both an M.S. (1975) and Sc.D. (1981) in Meteorology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Dr. Marks is a member of the American Meteorlogical Society (AMS) and became a Fellow of the AMS in 2000. He served as a member of AMS Committee on Radar Meteorology and of the AMS Council.
On this ideaXme episode we will hear from Dr. Marks about:
- His background - how he became interested in science, in meteorology, in hurricane research, and a little bit of his career journey through the academic and government sectors to date - A general introduction to NOAA and specifically the Hurricane Research Division - A discussion of core research priorities of the Hurricane Research Division - Technological developments that Dr. Marks is personally most excited about looking forward over the next decade or two, such as artificial intelligence/ machine learning in the forecasting process - The SUSTAIN lab or the "Surge Structure Atmosphere Interaction" lab - University of Miami US$45 million initiative to produce hurricanes up to a category 5 level (the strongest there is), with wind speeds reaching more than 252 km/h (157 mph). - This history of NOAA attempts to "stop a hurricane in its track" and Project STORMFURY - His experiences with flying into a hurricane on the NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircrafts

Ira Pastor ideaXme life sciences ambassador interviews Dr. Gulden Camci-Unal, Ph.D. Assistant Professor, Department Chemical Engineering, Francis College of Engineering, UMass Lowell.
Ira Pastor comments:
A few episodes ago ideaXme hosted the University of Michigan's Dr. Bruce Carlson. We spoke to him about the interesting topic of the importance of "substrate" in regenerative processes, for both the maintenance of normal tissue functions, and in the migration of cells or changes to tissue architecture that are part of healing processes. Substrate is broadly defined as the surface or material on, or from which, cells / tissues live, grow, or obtain nourishment, and have both biochemical, as well as biomechanical functions.
Today, on ideaXme we are joined Dr. Gulden Camci-Unal, Ph.D. Assistant Professor, Department Chemical Engineering, Francis College of Engineering, UMass Lowell. Dr Camci-Unal received her Ph.D. in Chemistry at Iowa State University (USA) and her M.Sc. and B.Sc. degrees both in Chemical Engineering at Middle East Technical University (Turkey). Dr. Camci-Unal's research is at the interface of biomaterials and bioengineering, including the design, synthesis, and characterization of functional biomaterials for applications in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, development of in vitro disease models for personalized medicine, as well as work in the area low-cost point of care diagnostics.
Her work interestingly brings in another interesting theme that we've touched on past shows, that of biomimicry, and looking at structures in nature, such as eggshells, plant leaves, marine sponges, and origami paper(!), to help guide viable and cost-effective bioengineering strategies. The overarching goal of her research is to improve human health and quality of life and she has made important contributions in generation of novel engineered platforms for cardiac, cardiovascular and bone tissue engineering.
Dr. Camci-Unal's research and teaching achievements include various awards such as the Iowa State University Teaching Excellence Award, Wakonse Fellowship, NSF ADVANCE Travel Award, Chevron-Phillips Award, Procter & Gamble Fellowship, and finalist for BioFlux Innovation Award. Her research has resulted in dozens of published manuscripts and conference abstracts, and patent applications so far. Dr. Camci-Unal's work has been published in high impact journals such as Advanced Materials, Nature Asia Materials, JACS, Biomaterials, Lab on a Chip, Soft Matter, and Tissue Engineering. She is an Editorial Board member of Scientific Reports (Nature Publishing Group), Journal of Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering, Regenerative Medicine Research, International Journal of Cardiovascular Research, International Journal of Bioprinting, and Journal of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering.
On this episode we will hear from Dr. Camci-Unal about :
