  • A Revolution: Democratising Access to Medication

Ira Pastor, ideaXme life sciences ambassador, interviews Daniel Liljenquist, former US Senator and Lead Architect and Board Chair of Civica Rx.

    Ira Pastor Comments:

A generic drug is a pharmaceutical drug that contains the same chemical substance as a drug that was originally protected by chemical patents, and are typically allowed for sale after the patents on the original drugs expire. Once generic drugs enter the market, competition often leads to substantially lower prices for both the original brand-name product and its generic equivalents. In 2014, according to an analysis by the Generic Pharmaceutical Association, generic drugs accounted for 88% of the 4.3 billion prescriptions filled in the United States, and the use of generic drugs in the United States led to US$254 billion in health care savings. The global market for generic drugs is estimated to reach $533 billion by 2021, up from $352 billion in 2016, and was growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.7% during that period. Unfortunately, in recent years things have been amiss in the generics drug segment whereby we have been seeing a rapid rise in the prices for many generic drugs that have been around for many years, if not decades. There has been major consolidation, with a handful of major companies dominating the generic drugs market (some units of big pharma), and there is an estimated backlog of 000s of generic drugs awaiting FDA approval. All of these factors have played a role in how both rare and common drugs, such as EpiPens, can shoot up in price so rapidly.

    Daniel Liljenquist:

Mr. Daniel Liljenquistis an American businessman and politician, who served in the Utah State Senate, and is the Lead Architect and Board Chair of Civica Rx,a nonprofit generic drug company established to reduce chronic generic drug shortages and price gauging.

Dan also serves as Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer for Intermountain Healthcare (a not-for-profit healthcare system that is the largest healthcare provider in the Intermountain West region of the United States, provides hospital and other medical services in Utah, Idaho, and Nevada, and has 37,000 employees) where he oversees Intermountain's Enterprise Initiative and Market Intelligence & Planning Offices. Intermountain was one of the founding groups behind Civica Rx. Dan has degrees in Economics from Brigham Young University, and Law from University of Chicago Law School.

On this ideaXme episode we will hear from Dan about:

His background and his personal journey through the world of economics, law, and politics, and into the world of non-profit healthcare cost containment. The background story leading up to the decision of the formation of Civica Rx. Civica Rx's development from start-up in 2018, to a robust network of 45 health systems, representing 1200 hospitals, with a total of 18 medications in production. Civica Rx's plans to bring over 100 medications to market in the next five years and building its own manufacturing capability. Civica Rx's partnerships on the international manufacturing and regulatory fronts.

  • Smart Prisons: Managing and Rehabilitating Prisoners with Psychology, Empathy and Artificial Intelligence

Ira Pastor, ideaXme life sciences ambassador, interviews Ms Pia Puolakka, Project Manager of the Smart Prison Project, under the Criminal Sanctions Agency, within Finland's Central Administration Unit.

    Criminal Sanctions Agency:

    Ira Pastor Comments:

In 2018, according to the World Prison Population List, which gives details of the number of prisoners held in 223 prison systems in independent countries and dependent territories around the globe, there were close to 11 million people are held in penal institutions, either as pre-trial detainees/remand prisoners or having been convicted and sentenced. About 50% of them were represented by prison populations in the U.S., China, Brazil, Russia and India. Interestingly, a few decades ago, going back to the 1960s, Finland had one of the highest rates of imprisonment in Europe, until researchers across the Nordic countries started investigating how much punishment helped in reducing crime, when they concluded it had minimal effect Over the following three decades, Finland remade its penal policy bit by bit, and by the end of this period of so called "de-carceration," Finland had one of the lowest rates of imprisonment on the continent, and they found that crime didn't increase as a result. What Finland found out that did work was a gradual reintroduction of prisoners into normal life. About a third of Finnish inmates are housed in an "open prison" (defined as any jail in which the prisoners are trusted to complete their sentences with minimal supervision and perimeter security, are often not locked up in their prison cells, and may be permitted to take up employment while serving their sentence), and Finland's Criminal Sanctions Agency says inmates who go through open prisons are less likely to be arrested again with a recidivism rate of only 20%. Pia Puolakka and the Smart Prison Project: Ms Pia Puolakka,is the Project Manager of the fascinating Smart Prison Project, under the Criminal Sanctions Agency, of the Central Administration Unit. The Criminal Sanctions Agency is responsible for the enforcement of sentences in Finland. It operates under the direction of the Ministry of Justice and implements the criminal policy defined by the Ministry. Ms Puolakka has been working for the Criminal Sanctions Agency since 2012 where she originally started as a prison psychologist, and since 2017 she has been working in the Central Administration, where she first worked as a senior specialist responsible for rehabilitative services including program work, family work, and psychological and spiritual services in prisons. In 2018 she was appointed as the project manager of the Smart Prison Projectand her current post includes developing digital services for rehabilitative purposes and leading the implementation of the smart prison system. By education, Ms Puolakka is a forensic psychologist and works also as a private psychotherapist and hypnotherapist, with degrees from University of Helsinki and Åbo Akademi. She has also done further studies at Aalto University in Artificial Intelligence and digitalization for the purposes of designing the current Smart Prison Project.

On this episode we will hear from Ms. Puolakka about:

Her background; how she became involved in forensic psychology, psychotherapy, and into the criminal sanctions and rehabilitative services system. About the history of Finland penal system and their de-carceration model. About the Smart Prison Project and some of their educational programs in digitalization and artifical intelligence (AI). Expansion of the Smart Prison Project throughout Finland and to other countries.

  • Make Digital-First: Rupert Rixon, Founder of Perspective Pictures

Amanda Christensen, ideaXme guest contributor and media and misinformation researcher, interviews Rupert Rixon, founder and Managing Director of digital-first video agency Perspective Pictures.

    Amanda Christensen Comments:

The way we watch content is changing, from the big screen, to the small screen, to the endless streaming services - but it's evolving further than that, as we spend more and more of our time online, watching more and more videos on YouTube and social media. While many businesses and organisations have been quick to see where we're watching content, they didn't see how our tastes were changing alongside it. Instead, they were simply taking what's known as "above the line" content, like television adverts and billboard graphics, and putting it straight into the digital world, expecting people to engage with it. However, we don't engage with content online in the same way as television or billboards; what we watch, like, share, and save varies from website to website, app to app. Each platform has a unique content ecosystem, so to speak, with variations in topics, style, length and more. For instance, what you might watch on Facebook could be completely different from what you're watching on YouTube. Knowing how to create content with those online channels in mind can be the difference between connecting with an audience, or being another video people scroll past and ignore.

    Rupert Rixon:

To get insight about the changes in how we're consuming content, I had the pleasure of speaking with Rupert Rixon, founder and Managing Director of digital-first video agency Perspective Pictures. Perspective Pictures was founded in 2016, by then 21-year-old Rupert. In the four years since he started the agency, he's grown the business from a shed in his parents' garden to a bustling Central London production hub creating narrative driven, digital-first video content for world-leading brands like Google, TimeOut, the Royal Air Force, and Deliveroo. Before that, Rupert made videos for his successful YouTube channel, which people have now spent over 30 years worth of time watching. He then went on to also create several branded documentaries like "Hitchhiking the Length of India" and "LA to NY," where Rupert longboarded across the United States to raise money for the charity Teenage Cancer Trust.

On this episode you'll hear from Rupert about:

Rupert's background and journey to starting Perspective Pictures. What it means to be "digital-first." How our content and video viewing trends have evolved alongside the internet and social media. How COVID-19 has affected our viewing trends. Future plans Rupert has for Perspective Pictures. The advice that shaped Rupert as a young creative and entrepreneur.

  • How to Abolish Modern Day Slavery and Address its Effects

Ira Pastor, ideaXme life sciences ambassador, interviews Bakary Tandia, Co-Founder of the Abolition Institute, a group working to promote awareness of, and dedicated to ending, the practice of slavery in the west African country of Mauritania.

Slavery and enslavement are defined of the state and condition of being a slave, where the individual cannot quit their service to another person and is treated like property. In chattel slavery, the enslaved person is legally rendered the personal property of the slave owner. In economics, the term de facto slavery describes the conditions of unfree labor and forced labor that most slaves endure. In the course of human history, while slavery was often a feature of civilization and legal in most societies, it is now outlawed in all countries of the world. In 2019, approximately 40 million people, of whom 26 percent were children, were enslaved throughout the world despite it being illegal. In the modern world, more than 50 percent of enslaved people provide forced labor, usually in the factories and sweatshops of the private sector of a country's economy.

In the industrialized countries, human trafficking is the modern variety of slavery; in the unindustrialized countries, enslavement by debt bondage is a common form of enslaving a person, such as captive domestic servants, forced marriage, and child soldiers. Modern day slavery is a multibillion-dollar industry with just the forced labor aspect generating US $150 billion each year.

    Bakary Tandia:

Bakary Tandia is a well-respected and dynamic human rights advocate with an extensive background in promoting human rights and social justice causes and Co-Founder of the Abolition Institute, a group working to promote awareness of, and dedicated to ending, the practice of slavery in the west African country of Mauritania, where it is estimated that around 90,000 people (over 2% of Mauritania's population) are chattel slaves. Bakary is a graduate of the Global Masters Program in International Affairs, Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, and holds bachelor degrees in International Criminal Justice from John Jay College of Criminal Justice at the City University of New York, and Criminology from the University of Abidjan (Ivory Coast). In addition to that, Bakary is a graduate of the Human Rights Advocates Program, at Columbia University, where he served as an Advocacy Workshop facilitator helping to educate and empower human rights activists around the world. Bakary also works as a Case Manager and Policy Advocate at African Services Committee, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the health and self-sufficiency of the African community in New York City, USA and beyond. Bakary has spoken on human rights issues at more than 100 universities and colleges around the United States and played a leadership role in major conferences and trainings around the world. As a member of the African NGOs Coordinating Committee representing the African Diaspora during the World Conference against Racism, he developed strong relationships with human rights organizations across the continent. Bakary Tandia was recipient of the 2005 New American Leaders Fellowship Program jointly sponsored by Coro Leadership Center and The New York Immigration Coalition and was a participant in the Hamburg-New York 2007 IntegrationXchange 2007, a program jointly sponsored through Department of Child Services by the U.S. State Department and the Koeberg Foundation, Germany.

On this episode we will hear from Bakary Tandia about: His background – how he developed an interest in criminology, criminal justice, and international affairs, and his path towards involvement and advocacy in the modern day abolitionist movement. The background history and current situation related to chattel slavery in Mauritania. The Abolition Institute – its background, funders, and partners.
