  • Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting

Ira Pastor, ideaXme life sciences ambassador interviews Eduardo Goncalves, founder of the Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting.

    Ira Pastor comments:

Trophy hunting is hunting of wild game for human recreation. The trophy is the animal, or part of the animal, kept and usually displayed, to represent the success of the hunt. Over the past decade, hunters have taken home over 1.7 million trophies from animals they have killed for sport, more than 200,000 of them which were from animals in danger of going extinct, including 10,000 lions, such as the well publicized case of Cecil the Lion, from the Hwange National Park in Matabeleland, North Zimbabwe.

    CITES:

CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) is a multilateral treaty to protect endangered plants and animals. CITES original aim, a few decades ago, was to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants did not threaten the survival of the species in the wild, and it accords varying degrees of protection to more than 35,000 species of animals and plants. The critically most endangered wildlife at risk: However, a loophole in CITES, allows trophy hunters to kill even the most critically endangered wildlife. A poacher cannot kill an elephant to sell its tusks. But a trophy hunter can kill the same elephant and take the same tusks.

    Eduardo Goncalves:

Eduardo Goncalves, is Founder of the Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting, a non-profit group that believes trophy hunting is cruel, archaic, immoral and unjustified, can inflict significant pain and suffering, undermines genuine conservation, and brings no real benefits to local communities.

    Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting:

Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting wants to see an immediate halt to the trade in trophies of vulnerable or threatened species, calls on governments to ban trophy hunting and imports/exports of hunting trophies, and believes there should be a comprehensive global agreement banning trophy hunting, with proper enforcement and penalties.

Prior to the Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting, Mr. Goncalves was CEO of the League Against Cruel Sports, where he led a successful campaign to stop plans to bring back fox-hunting, as well as to persuade the government to increase jail sentences for dog-fighting and breeding and shipping dogs into the UK for organized fights. He has also spent several years with World Wildlife Fund (WWFP) working on forest conservation and sustainability. Mr. Goncalves' wide-ranging career includes spells as a House of Commons researcher, a radio presenter, an investigative journalist, and as the director of a government department in UAE. In the run-up to the Paris Climate Summit, Mr. Goncalves was International Communications Director at The Climate Group, an influential organization set up with the support of then Prime Minister Tony Blair, as well as business and political leaders from around the world. Mr. Goncalves is also the author / co-author of several books, including KILLING GAME: The Extinction Industry, TROPHY HUNTERS EXPOSED: Inside the Big Game Industry, "The WWF Pocket Book of One Planet Living", "The Algarve Tiger", and "Blueprint for a Nuclear Weapon-Free World".

On this ideaXme episode we will hear from Mr. Goncalves about:

-His background, how he became interested in sustainability and conservation, and why he formed the Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting.

-The structure / goals of the Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting, its backers and its strategic partners.

-Misconceptions of the benefits of Trophy Hunting. -The profile / psychology of the Trophy Hunter.

-The CITES loophole and plans to close off.

  • Managing Future Longevity Risk at the IMF

Ira Pastor, ideaXme life sciences ambassador, interviews John Kiff, Senior Financial Sector Expert at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Financial Stability Division in the Monetary and Capital Markets Department.

    Ira Pastor Comments:

So on past shows as we've been profiling many of the novel products and technologies being developed by industry, by academia, and by governments on the healthy aging and longevity front, we've also taken time to discuss a range of the traditional and novel funding pools emerging to support these programs, from traditional life science venture capital and private equity, to the public stock markets, to innovative prize models, such as UK Research and Innovation's (UKRI) Healthy Ageing Challenge program and the Healthy Longevity Global Grand Challenge of the U.S. National Academy of Medicine.

Today, we are going to stay on this financial theme, but are going to head in a different direction, to talk to a thought leader who is asking the really big questions today, about what the future of global financial stability looks like, especially in a world where technologies may soon allow for "90 to become the new 50." That people are now living longer, due to science and technology, is very desirable and has greatly improved individual welfare. However, there are financial costs of longer life expectancy, for governments through employee retirement plans and social security schemes, for corporate employers with defined-benefit pension plans, for insurers that sell annuities, and for individuals without guaranteed retirement benefits. The financial implications of longevity risk (defined as the financial implications of people living longer than expected) are very large. It is estimated that if average life spans by 2050 were to increase only 3 years more than now expected, the already vast cost of aging would increase by 50 percent, with private defined benefit pension liabilities alone amounting to greater than $23 trillion. The International Monetary Fund (IMF)is an international organization headquartered in Washington, D.C., consisting of 189 countries working to foster global monetary cooperation, secure financial stability, facilitate international trade, promote high employment and sustainable economic growth, and reduce poverty around the world.

    John Kiff:

John Kiff is a Senior Financial Sector Expert at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Financial Stability Division in the Monetary and Capital Markets Department. As part of this team since 2005, he is involved in producing the IMFS semi-annual Global Financial Stability Report, as well as focusing on OTC derivative market infrastructure, securitization, and longevity risk transfer markets. Mr. Kiff is also focused on fintech and digital asset policy issues, including producing the IMF's monthly Fintech Update, and co-writing staff discussion notes on central bank digital currency. Prior to the IMF, John worked at the Bank of Canada for 25 years, where he spent most of his time managing the funding and investment of the government's foreign exchange reserves. On this episode we will hear from Mr. Kiff about: His background; how he developed an interest in economics, in central banking, and how he became focused on the topic of longevity risk management. A general introduction to the IMF as well as its relationship with the World Bank. A general discussion about "Longevity Risk" and the tools of Longevity Bonds and Longevity Swaps. A discussion of some other novel financial instruments and strategies for managing Longevity Risk. His work in the areas of digital currencies.

  • Brain Computer Interfaces Developed by DARPA

Ira Pastor, ideaXme life sciences ambassador, interviews Dr. Al Emondi, Program Manager in the Biological Technologies Office at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), US Department of Defense.

    Ira Pastor Comments:

Today, we are going to go down the fascinating pathway of advanced neuro-technologies and in doing so, are going to be joined again by our friends from theDefense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which is an agency of the United States Department of Defense (DoD) which is responsible for the development of emerging technologies for use by the military with a mission to make pivotal investments in breakthrough technologies for national security, as well as a tangential mission to formulate and execute research and development projects to expand the frontiers of technology and science, often beyond immediate U.S. military requirements.

    Brain-Computer Interface:

As some background to our discussion, a brain-computer interface (BCI) broadly refers to a neuro-technology that allows for a direct communication pathway between ones brain and an external device. BCIs differ from neuromodulation in that they allow for bidirectional information flow and are often directed at researching, mapping, assisting, augmenting, or repairing human cognitive or sensory-motor functions.

    DARPA:

Over the past couple of decades, DARPA has been working on very sophisticated neuro-technologies that rely on surgically implanted electrodes to interface with the central or peripheral nervous systems, demonstrating achievements such as neural control of prosthetic limbs, restoration of the sense of touch to the users of those limbs, relief of otherwise intractable neuropsychiatric illnesses such as depression, and improvement of memory formation and recall. However, due to the inherent risks of surgery, these invasive technologies have so far been limited to use by volunteers with significant clinical need. For the military's population (as well as the eventual civilian population) to benefit from such advanced neuro-technology, novel non-surgical interfaces are going to be required.

    Dr. Al Emondi:

Joining us for this fascinating show today is Dr. Al Emondi, Program Manager in the Biological Technologies Office (BTO) at DARPA who is a thought leader in the space and is working at the "bleeding edge" of such possibilities. Dr. Emondi joined DARPA in June 2017 and his focus is on neuro-technology and human-machine interaction. His current work explores novel neural interface system architectures applicable to broad user populations and improving the performance of neural interfaces and their application potential through the use of third-wave artificial intelligence. Dr. Emondi came to DARPA from the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center (SPA-WAR) Atlantic, located in Charleston, South Carolina, where he was the Chief Technology Officer for, and served as deputy CTO to the SPA-WAR HQ CTO for the Atlantic region. He also led the science and technology competency, which included personnel focused on basic and applied sciences, technology transition, and technology transfer. Before his tour at SSC Atlantic, he was an early pioneer for software-defined radio research initiatives at the Air Force Research Lab in Rome, New York. Dr Emondi holds a PhD degree in neuroscience and a Master of Science in electrical engineering from Syracuse University, and a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Wilkes University.

On this episode we will hear from Dr. Emondi about:

His background; how he developed an interest in science, in electrical engineering and neuroscience, and in exploring the frontiers of such a scientific intersection. The goals of DARPA's Next-Generation Non-Surgical Neuro-technology program. The goals of DARPA's Intelligent Neural Interfaces (INI) program and related applications of DARPA's Third-Wave artificial intelligence platform. The goals of the DARPA Neural Engineering System Design (NESD) program seeking to develop high-resolution neuro-technology capable of mitigating the effects of injury and disease on the visual and auditory systems of military personnel. His work in developing Haptic technologies (referring to any technology that can create an experience of touch by applying forces, vibrations, or motions to the user), and the Hand Proprioception & Touch Interfaces for Prosthetic Limbs (HAPTIX) program.

Data privacy has long been a topic of contention, and the importance of proper security protocols have never been more needed as we individuals, businesses, and governments have been forced to rapidly digitise everyday interactions as a part of lockdown and COVID-prevention procedures. Recent events like the large-scale account hacking on Twitter,as well as heightened concerned over TikTok's use of datahave heightened these concerns in the public eye. However, at present, there is little we can do to completely protect ourselves from giving up our personal information - if you want to access a website, flick through an app, get directions, or any number of the hundreds of minute tasks we perform digitally every day, you're going to be giving up some degree of your personal data to do so. But what if that didn't need to be the case?

    Ilan Komargodski, Ph.D.:

To address this topic, I had the pleasure of speaking with Ilan Komargodski, Ph.D., Researcher at the Cryptography & Information Security (CIS) Lab at NTT Research.

As a part of the CIS Lab and NTT Research, Ilan and the CIS Lab team model various scenarios that are threatening data privacy and information security, and then use these models to design cryptography tools and protocols to protect user privacy. With data privacy being a key concern across all sectors, the applications of their work is endless, and can help to facilitate technological innovation by reducing, or potentially eliminating, the key concern and barrier of privacy and information security. Through methods like homomorphic encryption, the CIS Lab and NTT Research are also developing new ways to analyse and compute data without compromising data privacy. Ilan started his career as a Software Engineer in the Israeli Army, leaving to pursue both an M.Sc. and Ph.D. at the Weizmann Institute of Science doing fundamental research in computer science with an emphasis on cryptography. Prior to joining NTT Research, Ilan was a postdoctoral researcher at Cornell Tech.

In this episode we will hear from Ilan about:

His background and how he developed an interest in computer science and cryptography. The research being undertaken in the three labs at NTT Research, as well as a deep dive into the the Cryptography & Information Security Lab. A top-level introduction to cryptography and homomorphic encryption.
