This 20-minute guided progressive muscle relaxation practice takes you through two complete passes of tension and release to help your whole body settle.

The first pass uses stronger contractions through the feet, legs, core, hands, arms, shoulders, and face. The second pass moves more slowly through smaller muscle groups using only a slight amount of tension, almost like going over the body with a fine-tooth comb.

You can practice lying down or seated, though lying down may help you experience the full depth of the release. Close your eyes, follow the instructions, and notice the difference between tension and relaxation rather than trying to force yourself into a calm state.

This guided PMR session includes:

• Two full-body relaxation passes
• Progressive tension and release
• Feet, legs, core, arms, shoulders, neck, jaw, and face
• Stronger contractions followed by subtle muscle awareness
• Space to rest after the final release
• A slow and gentle return to normal awareness

This practice may be useful when you feel physically tense, overstimulated, restless, or unable to properly settle down. You can also use it before sleep, after a stressful day, or whenever your body seems to be holding onto more than your mind realizes.

Never tense a muscle to the point of pain. Skip or modify any movement that does not feel safe for your body.

Do not listen while driving or doing anything that requires your full attention.

I counted the number of conversations I am loosely carrying across friends, family, former students, clients, fighters, podcast listeners, and people who occasionally begin a message with, “This might sound crazy, but…”

Before the Backrooms became an internet horror universe, people were already dreaming about them.
