A lot of events are based on taking from others. What if you show up at an event and serve and meet everyone else's needs. People will refer you to others because you meet their needs.

Giving away some of your content for free allows you to filter out the people you want to work with. Giving away your book or other info allows you to have a higher level conversation with someone when you do sit down with them, and if they don't do it, you know they are not someone you want to work with. It becomes a qualifier.
