This question came in from one of the new Christians in our church, who was reading Philippians chapter two and asked this question: “What does it mean to work out your own salvation?” Ok. Let’s address this. If you want to get your bible, we’ll be starting in Philippians chapter 2.
The first thing that comes into some people’s minds when they see this is, “I thought salvation wasn’t by works, it’s by faith?” It’s a valid question. We know from elsewhere in Scripture that Paul himself, who wrote this phrase in Philippians 2:12, also wrote the lengthy teachings in Romans and Galatians on salvation by faith alone apart from works. Paul is not contradicting himself here. Working out your salvation isn’t just stated here in Philippians 2. The verse in question, though, contains our question, so let’s read the verse: “Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,” Let’s look at what’s going on here.
What does the prophesy in Joel 2 have to do with you and me today? As much as we may long for the outpouring of the Spirit we cannot let our desires misinterpret Scripture, so what does the text say?
0:00 - Consider the flow and timing of the book of Joel.
2:30 - Joel gives us a look into the future.
7:00 - When will God pour out His Spirit on all flesh? Peter tells us.
11:22 - What does Joel's prophesy have to do with me and you in 2022?
15:21 - How many of our old men dream dreams?
16:47 - As much as I might want this for today, I cannot let my desire cause me to misinterpret Scripture.
19:06 - 1 - Be careful what you emphasize.
28:52 - 2 - Is this also for today as much as it was in Peter's day?
39:48 - 3 - How do we tap the Spirit's power?
42:14 - 4 - Testimonies of people who experienced these things.
47:42 - 5 - Where does the Spirit show up in Acts 2?
53:25 - 6 - I conclude the prophecy of Joel 2 does apply to us.
56:45 - 7 - Everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.
57:44 - 8 - We need the Spirit's power.
1:07:23 - Quote from Duncan Campbell.
1:08:13 - We need right doctrine but clothed with power from on high.
1:11:53 - Closing prayer.
Ephesians 4 reminds us of the character that is required to cultivate and maintain church unity. How will you and I build a lasting community? How will you survive and thrive as a long-term member of your local church?
The book of Joel makes it loud and clear that natural disaster is not some accident, but rather the Lord is the ultimate cause behind it all.
In recent news headlines, a Catholic Diocese declared that an Arizona priest used one wrong word in baptisms for decades, and thereby they believe those baptisms are invalid. Are any Catholic baptisms valid? What do they believe actually saves you? This news headline is a springboard into talking about the Gospel and how it is that a man or woman can truly have their sins forgiven in Jesus Christ alone.
The heart that has once been drunk with fanaticism is ever after exposed to the same evil; it will mistake excitement for true religion. Fanaticism is not faith. When the affections and mere-sensibility of the heart are excited, and the understanding and conscience are but little employed, there is a sad preparation for a false hope or some wild delusion for fanatical faith.
In this sermon, Tim talks about some of the current issues Christians are facing. Will some be arrested and put in prison for preaching the Gospel to the lost?
