This week, I sit down with Chad Townsend, who is the owner of Millie’s Homemade Ice Cream. Millie’s opened about 5 years ago and has been taking over the ice cream game ever since. I talk with Chad about where he came from and how the hell someone just decides to start making ice cream for a living. Chad started cooking when he was a kid, like most of us. He quickly decided that cooking was something he wanted to do for the rest of his life, so he went to culinary school. He wanted to cook great food. Ice cream didn’t come into the picture for some years after but, here we are now. Millie’s is planting itself into the main vein of Pittsburgh Culture. Starting off with a single ice cream maker and a tapped out wife’s credit card, he had some work to do. Listen to how Chad made all this shit happen and how he turned a small operation into numerous locations in sought after areas of the city and distribution deals with local establishments like Giant Eagle and more. This episode was definitely awesome. I emailed Chad a year ago and I was finally able to make this happen so it was exciting to hear his story.
