Confirmation sermon using the text from Easter 5C

Sermon on John 10:22-30.

Jesus appears to the disciples on thus shores of the sea of Galilee, and they see him clearly.

If we learned anything this week, it is you may think you’rea football fan, but are you a drive all the way across the country, stand outside in Wisconsin Spring rain, put game day facepaint and foam hat on fan?  You follow sports, but will you pull your kid out of school and wake him up at 4am just so you can be in the studio audience for a Dan Patrick show kind of follower? 

Fan stands for fanatic.  The Latin adjective fanaticus, which in usage, came to mean a person who was “frantic, frenzied, or mad.” I imagine when Jesus cleaned out the temple, people thought he was frantic, frenzied or mad, but the Bible called that zeal.  Discover the good and bad kind of zeal, the good and bad kind of fanatic.

In this season of Easter, it is good we review the details: who, when, where. That reminds us that the resurrection of Christ is not fairytale or fable. It is a historical event. . . the historical event. However, we do ourselves a disservice if we simply recall the historic details of Easter without thinking about Easter’s significance. Jesus won. That means something! It is our privilege and pleasure to use the fifty days of Easter to discuss this fact: because he lives, not only is our eternity secure, but we have abundant resources to face the present. Today we focus on Because He lives: Death has Lost its Sting

1 Corinthians 15:51-57 (EHV)

Look, I tell you a mystery. We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the blink of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For this perishable body must put on imperishability, and this mortal body must put on immortality. But once this perishable body has put on imperishability, and this mortal body has put on immortality, then what is written will be fulfilled: Death is swallowed up in victory. Death, where is your sting? Grave, where is your victory? he sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!

Good Friday Sermon on Galatians 3:10-13.

Sometimes fans reading about athletes who negotiate or renegotiate their contracts can lose sight of the big picture.  For the athlete, it’s about providing for themselves and their families even when they say “It’s not about the money.”  

We can lose our sight on the big picture with God too.  Today we’ve get a chance to reflect on the big picture, that God in his grace, has buried the covenant he made at Sinai.  that the obedience that was lacking was the obedience his son Jesus earned, so that we who were lacking, would be given everything, everything is new.
