קלרינה התחילה את החינוך שלה בארץ בבית ספר דתי, ונאלצה להתמודד עם הפער בין החינוך הדתי לחיים המאד חילוניים בבית, והצורך להחביא את הזהות שלה שוב כמו שההורים שלה היו צריכים להחביא את היהדות שלהם באוזבקיסטן. כשקלרינה עברה לבית ספר חילוני היא התחילה להתמודד עם הצקות בגלל שהיא מברית המועצות לשעבר.

מוזיקה וספרות תמיד עזרו לקלרינה להתמודד עם קשיים וכיום היא כותבת סיפורים ושירים.

Amy is a social entrepreneur and a child of Chinese immigrants. At a very young age, she became an interpreter and translator for her parents. Amy shared examples of intergenerational trauma, cultural norms, ,and abuse, which all led her to be strong and outspoken. We discussed mental health issues that immigrants and their children face, and how in many immigrant communities it is taboo to seek help. Our conversation concluded with Amy's advice on accommodating immigrants at work, and self advocacy.

אולגה עלתה לארץ בגיל שש מאזרבייג'ן ב1990.

העלייה שלה התחילה בבני ברק בבית ספר דתי. ההשתלבות מבחינת שפה לא הייתה פשוטה ולאחר מכן בבית ספר חילוני אולגה הייתה צריכה להתמודד עם איומים מאח של חברה שלה וניסיונות לשנות את השם שלה לשם עברי.

בצבא היא הייתה בבסיס חייל אוויר עם המון עולים כמוה וזה פתאום גרם לה לראות את המצב מנקודת מבט שונה.

אולגה ובעלה שניהם עולים לשעבר אבל עם הילדים הם מדברים עברית בבית. אולגה הייתה רוצה שהדור הבא ילמד מהקשיים שההורים שלהם חוו בזמן העלייה וכמה זה עזר להרבה עולים לפתח אישיות חזקה ונתן את היכולת להתמודד עם קשיים. דיברנו גם על הסדרה דור אחד וחצי והדיון שזה העלה בחברה הישראלית. העצה של אולגה למהגרים זה לנסות להשתלב במקום החדש בלי למחוק את הזהות שלהם.

Alex rediscovered her immigration story by writing poems about her immigration experience. When she attended a cinema school and learned script writing, Alex realized that her immigration story is an inspiration and not something to be embarrassed about. That’s how the docuseries Generation 1.5 דור אחד וחצי was born.

Alex believes that to make a marginal group mainstream you have to start by educating others about the group's culture. Her non-profit organization One Million Lobby advocates for the rights of over one million immigrants from the former Soviet Union to Israel who even in 2022 face struggles.

In this episode, I had the honor of chatting with victor who escaped gang violence in El Salvador and came to the US on a bicycle to find a better future, and he sure did.

Although the journey from being undocumented to becoming a citizen has not been easy, Victor never lost sight of his dream to become an electrical engineer. Victor discussed the fear and struggles while being undocumented, and how music and learning to play the guitar helped him through difficult times.

Victor's advice to immigrants is to be brave, and not let fear dictate their decisions. To non-immigrants, Victor emphasized the importance of listening to immigrant stories, and not judging people's choices.

Mina is a human rights lawyer who was born and raised in Cairo, Egypt and moved to the US in his early 20s. As a Coptic in Egypt, he always felt like a second-class citizen.

In the US he has more Jewish friends than Coptic friends, because of the similarities in the cultures. Thanks to help from great American friends, Mina integrated well in the US and feels that he has both the Coptic Egyptian culture and American.

We discussed the religious sectarianism in Egypt, how Copts feel as a minority in Egypt, and everywhere in the world, and the trauma that resulted from it. He explained the concept of the global Copt that does not relate to the story of persecution, and we discussed the question of "where are you from?", and why some people find it offensive.

Betty Artes was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and immigrated to the US at the age of seven. Her family was getting ready to immigrate during the beginning of the Cuban Missile Crisis, and her cousins who already lived in the US suggested they delay the journey. Betty's father, who was briefly arrested during Juan Perón's regime in Argentina said that if there was going to be a nuclear war, it did not matter where they were.

Betty's journey of assimilation included getting used to the weather, food, and language. Not having friends, in the beginning, was difficult, Betty and her sister felt isolated and that caused them to become more quiet. Betty had to learn English by osmosis since there were no English as second language programs. This struggle actually motivated her to pursue her first career as a bilingual teacher.

Betty's grandmother who was herself an Italian immigrant in Argentina left a legacy of food. When Betty moved from New York City to Colorado she became involved in a local Mexican Restaurant which was a dream come true for her. Betty wants to make people happy with food, and after the restaurant closed in 2014, her business partner and she started selling their famous Mexican Chili sauce.
