Jim Coyle ran 12 companies before he figured out what he was actually supposed to do. He sold candy bars to pay for a school trip to Italy, made beaded jewelry that put him through college, ran a paint contracting company, owned restaurants in Chicago, and built a real estate development business. He describes all of it the same way: he did it the hard way. Then a friend handed him a self-published book called Traction, and Jim called Gino Wickman to tell him, straight to his face, that he intended to steal his stuff. Gino told him to go ahead, because they give it all away. Jim became EOS® implementer number 16, and in this conversation with Christine Watts and Kris Snyder he traces his whole quest for impact back to two funerals: his mother, a kindergarten teacher, and his father, a judge. Both drew standing-room-only crowds of people who came to say how they had been changed. Jim decided his job was to be half as cool as his parents, and he has spent the years since building the tools to do it.
