The Power of Love for Racial Equity School Communities

Psycho-logically, engaged learners are intrinsically motivated by curiosity, interest, and enjoyment and are likely to want to achieve their own intellectual or personal goals when they see discipline, concentration, investment, enthusiasm, and effort. Problem-solving is an instructional technique that promotes intellectual involvement and active engagement. Studies show that closing racial gaps in wages, housing credit, lending opportunities, and access to higher education would amount to an additional $5 trillion in the gross domestic product in the American economy over the next five years. Teaching is all about listening, speaking, reading, presenting, and writing. Teachers who hone their communication skills are prepared to instruct, advise and mentor students entrusted in their care. One of the by-products of racial equity in school communities is by creating opportunities for the improvement of historically underserved communities, which benefits everyone.

How is COVID-19 Affecting Student Learning?

School learning rubric in the past has always provided for a role-play activity in which students perform characters in a society that influences political, economic, geographical, and social co-creation. That all provides some interactive experience to maximize student learning during a unit of study for time management's sake. When time management strategies lack implementation, it leaves room for chaos as students constantly need guidance to pace their learning. Staying in groups and systematically moving from learning center to learning center upon teacher prompting is most efficient. Nevertheless, COVID-19 has significantly affected group thinking/ mass practice, typically instructions repeated over a concentrated period of information or skills to help reinforce learning. Which ultimately has affected student test scores. Students who took tests before and after COVID-19 school closures were demographically similar, and all analyses were limited to smaller sample sizes in the spring 2020 and fall 2021. The learning theories like – behaviorism, constructivism, and information/symbolic processing that educators have used in the past are strong enough to build from in this new technological age.

Buddy Thornton: As a positive social change agent, why is it crucial for teachers to demonstrate awareness of appropriate behavior standards and expectations for students at various developmental levels?

Fighting for Civil Rights from a Socioeconomics Perspective

Education, Occupation, and income are considered the leading indicators of a successful life in our society. Vygotsky's sociocultural theory views human development as a socially mediated process in which children acquire their cultural values, beliefs, and problem-solving strategies through collaborative dialogues with more knowledgeable members of society. In modern societies, social mobility is typically measured by career and generational changes in the socioeconomic levels of occupations. Erik Erikson – focused on how children socialize and how this affects their sense of self. His Theory of Psychosocial Development includes eight stages from infancy to old age. A healthy personality is a result of completing each stage of development. Conflict arises if the individual does not complete a stage. Studies revealed a need for universal interventions techniques like these in school, community, and family settings that seek to avoid conflicts with peers but promote collaboration necessary for social mobility.

A Self-Directed Classroom Culture

Educating students includes helping them develop the skills to be clear about their values while letting go of the idea that a student’s success reflects on you. As educators and leaders, we must be clear in communicating with people who have diverse backgrounds. Confidence building is one of the many vital tools to help support individual children's learning inclusively. High expectations involve expressive and healthy relationships throughout their education in personal and school settings that model how they learn. We prepare them for this when we foster peer support, consider natural consequences, and believe in their abilities to have positive growth mindsets. As teens navigate peer culture, leadership skill sets, acceptance to failure, and learning culture plays an essential role in preparing them with the social skills needed for all students to have their voice and to be successful moving forward.

Vagueness in Educational Policy Creates Challenges for All

Do we value and give reverence to our educators in the United States, like other countries give value and reverence for their teachers? Teachers  on all tiers of education already have the responsibility to create an equitable environment for student success in the classroom. Educating students to include working with parents, administrators, teacher unions, and school board trustees as resources for positive youth development. The policy must be enforced to maintain the professional, ethical conduct, practices, and performances required by all school districts, educational institutions, education certification programs, and education agencies in the United States. The education system in the United States is made up of a large proportion of independent school districts and public schools. Educational policy means that each district has the responsibility and accountability of maintaining its own rules and governing board and adhering to laws and rules established by their state-level Legislature and the United States Congress.

Buddy Thornton: How would you start a conversation about passing laws regarding maximum class sizes, distributions of funds, and required so many numbers school days now, especially with COVID-19 on the rise?

Self-Transformation is Key

COVID-19 pandemic has restructured our society and how we interact. Our leaders may need to join forces globally and do more on new channels concerning self-transformation for our loved ones. Self-transformation has a dual purpose; not only does it involve the transformation and purification of your outer personality, but it also creates an awakening and strengthening of your inner self. Maslow's hierarchy of needs said that "Basic human needs such as food and shelter must be met before higher learning, reflection, and self-actualization can occur." How we perceive one another also shapes how we view each other across our different social layers and environments—the root cause of our influence.

Christopher Terry: You live in the United Kingdom, so I believe this question is very relevant for you. Why do educators need to continue to learn about diversity issues throughout their careers?

Buddy Thornton: This is a global question: Why should teachers focus more on the underserved community children in the future, and why do our young scholars have such a strong desire for acceptance in their adolescent years?

Teen Suicide and Absenteeism

Suicide occurs when a person chooses to end his or her life. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2019, suicide was the second leading cause of death among children and adolescents ages 13 to 19 and the leading cause of death among 13-year-olds. It is the 10th leading cause of death among all Americans.  Suicide is a serious public health problem among all age groups. It exacts an enormous toll among youth due to the significant years of potential life lost. In 2018, suicide was the second-leading cause of death among 10- to 24 years old. Youth suicidal ideation, attempt, and completion are on the rise. Far more adolescents have suicidal thoughts or attempt suicide and survive than those who die by suicide. The 2019 Youth Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System results show that 18.8% of high school students seriously considered attempting suicide, and 8.9% attempted suicide. The cost of suicide attempts in the United States in 2019 was estimated to be $70 billion. Risk factors associated with suicide among adolescents include a family history of depression or suicide, loss of a parent to death or divorce, physical or sexual abuse, lack of a support network, feelings of social isolation, bullying.

Sandi Roberts: Some of our students have been directly impacted by suicide, or they may be providing care for a family member that attempted suicide. What should parents and teachers be on the lookout for to counter our students' suicidal plans and attempts?

Renee Logan: It is like there is a spirit of death out in the world. People are in this fantasy world, especially the combination of mood, disruptive, and substance abuse disorders. What types of discussion boards chat and create safe places where students interact?

Buddy Thornton: Address microaggressions concerning these behavioral episodes. Also, please make the listening audience aware of how the current situation impacts communities compared to socioeconomic status?

Developing Our Young People

Educating students includes helping them develop the skills to be clear about their values while still interacting with people who may have diverse backgrounds. Educators use tools like the practical assessment to help support individual children's learning inclusively. It involves tools and approaches that are appropriate to individual children and are undertaken in settings familiar to them. We want our children to have expressive and healthy relationships throughout their education in personal and school settings. We prepare them for this when we have loving, supportive conversations and have transparent relationships with them in our homes. As teens navigate peer culture, leadership skill sets, acceptance to failure, and learning culture plays an essential role in preparing them with the social skills needed for developing our young people to be successful moving forward.

High Expectations During COVID-19

Most schools will continue all of the COVID-19 precautions since the outbreak started in 2020, including vaccinations, testing, masking, and symptom tracking. The teachers' role in the process has never been more significant in providing the help and resources students need to meet these goals. Teachers will have to communicate to both parents and students that they have the skills and support needed to succeed. When students struggle to meet high expectations, a conversation must be made to determine the issue and plan to help the student get back on track. Moving forward, both parents and teachers must give students the autonomy to discuss and make some decisions as a class will reinforce expectations and encourage self-monitoring.

Buddy Thornton: What are some ways educators can increase a sense of school belonging (i.e., perceptions of being liked, accepted, included, respected, and encouraged to participate in school and classroom activities) may reduce the school dropout rate among culturally diverse students?

Coopetition through Repetition and Reinforcement

Repetition is possibly the most intuitive principle of learning, traceable to ancient Egyptian and Chinese education, with records dating back to approximately 4,400 and 3,000 B.C. Even Aristotle commented on the role of repetition in learning by saying, "it is frequent repetition that produces a natural tendency" and "the more frequently two things are experienced together, the more likely it will be that the experience or recall of one will stimulate the recall of the other." Educators and organizational leaders can increase in value when repetition is used as a reinforcement strategy. In other words, regardless of how much competition occurs, repetition through co-opetition partners will produce more complementary outcomes with competing entities. Coopetition is the act of cooperation between competing companies; businesses that engage in both competition and cooperation are said to be in co-opetition. It is recommended that organizations should strive to engage in an "optimal level" of co-opetition, as "too little" or "too much" of such strategies can be harmful to various types of company performance.
