Join us as we kick off the second season of our podcast with a deep dive into the pervasive issue of ageism, particularly as it affects older people. In this episode, we explore the growing demographic of individuals aged 60 and over, the unique challenges they face, and the often-overlooked discrimination against them in various facets of life, from healthcare to employment.

We consider some alarming statistics and hear expert insights on the harmful stereotypes and biases that contribute to ageism. We also discuss practical steps and intentions we can take to combat this discrimination and support the elderly in our communities. Tune in for a thought-provoking discussion that aims to inspire compassion and action towards creating a more inclusive society for all ages.

Suggested intention for this week:

We will that all member States of the United Nations are moved with compassion and pragmatism to prioritise the enactment of laws and regulations to strengthen the protection of the rights of older persons and to eliminate all forms of discrimination, abuse and violence against them, including ageism in employment, healthcare and other settings.

In today's episode, we take a deep dive into the escalating violence in Myanmar, particularly focusing on the persecution of ethnic minorities, including the Rohingya. With over three million people displaced due to conflict, we explore the historical and current context of Myanmar's turmoil and the long-standing ethnic conflicts that continue to ravage the nation to see where we might focus our prayers and intentions.

We cover the geographical and historical background of Myanmar, the roots of its civil war, and the ongoing humanitarian crisis. We also discuss the plight of the Rohingya, described by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as one of the most discriminated groups in the world. We highlight the challenges faced by other ethnic minorities and the complexities of their struggles against the ruling military junta.

As the UN reports a surge in violence and displacement, we focus our prayers and intentions on the wisdom needed by international actors and the newly appointed UN Special Envoy on Myanmar, Julie Bishop, to navigate a path towards peace. Join us in holding intentions for the people of Myanmar and the international efforts to bring about lasting change.

Following this episode, we will be taking a two-week break, but we'll return in mid-June with more insights and updates. Stay tuned and stay connected with us through our Facebook group and live intention holding sessions. Thank you for listening and for being part of our collective impact.

Suggested main focus for intention this week:

As UN Special Envoy on Myanmar Julie Bishop begins her term, we might bring our main focus for this week to the challenging role she faces in seeking a path to peace:

We will that UN Special Envoy on Myanmar Julie Bishop and all international actors who may have influence over Myanmar’s military junta leadership and warring ethnic groups, will have wisdom to know how to pursue a path towards peace in that country.

Please join us in holding this.

Welcome to the latest episode of Impact!, in which we take a deep dive into the profound significance, challenges and opportunities facing Africa as we mark Africa Day, celebrated this year on May 25. Join us as we explore the transformative role Africa is playing in global geopolitics, its unique opportunities, such as being resource-rich and home to a young, tech-savvy and opportunistic population, and its progress and vital role in sustaining and rebooting the global economy.

We examine the successes of pan-Africanism, and especially the African Union's role in fostering unity and collaborative efforts to navigate shared hurdles like poverty, conflict, and governance issues.

Suggested intention focus

In keeping with the core objectives celebrated on Africa Day, the African Union believes that “we can contribute to [a] vision of an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa that plays an influential role in the global arena.”

Let us join them in holding that, in taking as our key focus for intention this week:

We will that the governments of all African nations will continue to recognise the value of deep cooperation and commitment to their participation in the work and objectives of the African Union.

In this edition of Impact!, Ellen and Clive delve into the complex and often overlooked issue of Lebanon's refugee crisis.

They discuss potential focal points for healing through our intentions and prayers, including compassionate treatment of refugees, a swift international response, smart diplomacy, and peaceful resolutions to conflicts involving Hezbollah and Israel. The hosts also explore the implications of a recent pledge by the European Union to deliver €1 billion in financial aid to help counteract the crisis.

The European Union aid package may appear generous, but it’s doubtless limited in what it can enable. Given the importance for appropriate use of this money, we suggest holding as our main focused intention this week:

We will that the Lebanese government and its administrators will be guided in where to distribute and how to coordinate the funding and assistance offered by the European Union in the most equitable way to bring maximum benefit both for its own citizens and the refugees within its borders.

In the second part of her conversation with Clive, Earth healer and retreat founder Sabine Engelhardt describes how going off grid involves getting away from romantic ideas about nature. While there's great value just being with nature, we need to get our hands dirty for our intuition to be fully reawakened. Sabine shares her fear that humanity is ill-prepared humanity for changes that are approaching, and calls for a return to simpler ways of living and honing our practical skills to face up to this.

While we can’t predict timeframes for this change, we reflect on some wake-up calls that suggest that it may come much sooner than many may anticipate, and bring about a need for a radical resetting of the collective consciousness and grounding ourselves.

Yet, in the spirit of free will intention, we may have considerable leeway in determining the nature of this new existence. We can energetically hold and channel the qualities we wish to see in the societies that emerge. And so it is that the work of the three crones from pre-history that first drew Sabine to Croatia remains as important today as it’s ever been.

In this insightful episode, we explore the recent wave of campus protests across the United States, ignited by the ongoing conflict in Gaza. We delve into student responses to the crisis, specifically looking at campuses of prestigious universities like Columbia University and Yale. We offer a neutral examination of both pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian sentiment rise on US campuses, discussing anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, and Jewish students' perspectives in the context of these movements.

We move beyond protest dynamics to scrutinize the underlying demands and motivations, be it calls for institutional divestment or opposition to government policies, and their relationship with the BDS movement. We also shed light on events such as the violence at UCLA, arresting of protest participants, and the resulting impact on education. This episode aims to navigate through the multiple layers of this critical global issue, in our aim to suggest concentrated prayer and intent.

This in-depth episode also investigates the intricate balance strived for by university administrations and law enforcement amidst the ongoing protests. Concerns over free speech suppression and rights to peaceful assembly have intensified, along with the unsettling rise in anti-Semitism. The role of law enforcement and the restrictions imposed by university authorities, and their influence on the protest momentum, form an integral part of our discussion.

We further delve into the political implications of these protests, examining President Joe Biden's carefully curated response and the increasing pressure for a firmer stance from Republican opponents. As the potential impact on Biden's reelection bid becomes increasingly complex and divisive, the political aspect of these protests intensifies.

The response of universities, ranging from negotiation with activists to seeking police enforcement, is also examined. With the escalating trend in anti-Semitic and anti-Islamic hate speech, we confront challenges related to the limits of free speech while pointing out the pressing need for peaceful dialogue. We also discuss the critical role and responsibility universities have in striking a balance between protest allowance and ensuring student safety and uninterrupted education.

Suggested intention

Deciding what is acceptable, and in accordance with the principle of free speech and the right to protest, and what crosses the line into threatening the safety of others, incites hatred, and puts unreasonable pressure on authorities to maintain order is a difficult judgement for any free society. Given this difficulty, we suggest holding as our intention this week:

We will that University presidents, trustees, and others in positions of influence will be guided in their responses to the protests on their campuses.

Please join us in holding this.

In this special episode, as we approach the end of World Immunisation Week, we take a special look at how the world is performing in terms of vaccinating its people. This month also marks the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), which was created by the World Health Assembly with the aim of vaccinating all children against diphtheria, measles, pertussis, polio, tetanus, tuberculosis, and smallpox, the only human disease ever eradicated. There’s much to celebrate, although warnings and challenges too that need our prayers and focus for sending intention.

Suggested intention

While there has been significant progress in the 50 years since the UN’s drive toward immunizing all against preventable diseases, with the continued need for all countries of the world to co-operate in funding and supporting vaccination rollout, we suggest holding as our focused intention this week:

We will that all governments will be moved to recognise the priority for enabling and promoting vaccination against preventable diseases for all people who are governed by them.

Please join us in holding this.

This week Ellen talks to Zen teacher Brother Dave Kenneally, aka the Marine Monk, whose practice and study as an ordinand in the tradition of the late Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh’s Order of Interbeing spans more than twenty years. Brother Dave and Ellen talk about how to respond to hearing bad news in a mindful way, the exhaustion of near constant exposure to news that many of us experience in the modern world, and the importance of directing energy  inward as well as outwardly looking for solutions to problems.

How can we stay in touch with our deepest intentions? How can we truly care for ourselves as well as for others? How can we become more aware of a false sense of urgency? How can we be kept beware of being incoherent when we merely react to hearing a story in the news? How can we reverse the tendency to be more outward than inward focused in our attention, and in turn, show up more powerfully in the world? Brother Dave offers reflections on these and many more questions in this inspiring conversation.

Thich Nhat Hanh said, “peace in oneself, peace in the world." Brother Dave explains how we can each make this our practice, offering many words of wisdom in ways that relate to being in the world. He also reflects on his own experiences of how easy or otherwise practising mindfulness while living in a monastry is compared to living in the world and the constant external stimuli it presents. Brother Dave’s answer may surprise you!

Join hosts Ellen Benz and Clive Johnson  as they delve into the roots of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict, exploring the history, on-going tensions, and geopolitical intricacies of the long-standing conflict between the two former Soviet states.

The countries’ principal dispute concerns the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh, a mountainous and heavily forested area in the Karabakh region of the southern Caucasus mountain range. Ellen and Clive look at the background, go behind the reasons for the conflict, and assess where our prayers and intentions are needed now as a very fragile peace appears to be holding between the two countries.

As is customary, Ellen and Clive close the episode by assessing where our prayers and intentions are needed now.

Suggested intention

While there have been some positive developments towards a potential peace deal between Azerbaijan and Armenia, the situation remains volatile, with unresolved territorial disputes and border tensions threatening to derail progress. The potential for further conflict remains strong if underlying issues are not adequately addressed. Given this tense situation, we suggest holding as our focused intention this week:

We will that those in positions of influence and power within the Armenian and Azerbaijan governments will be moved in with compassion to work toward and maintain peace between their nations.

Please join us in holding this.
