At a time when ordinary citizens are being shot on the streets and warrantless raids conducted in Minneapolis, we ask whether the US is witnessing a “Bonhoeffer moment”–a time when putting faith to the test in the face of oppression may involve great personal sacrifice. We reflect on the life and teachings of the Lutheran pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer, whose courage and example in resisting Naziism led to his paying the ultimate price. We ask whether there are echoes of the time he experienced in what’s being witnessed in Minnesota, and whether his model may be (or is) being played out today. We reflect upon his call to costly discipleship and the urgency for interfaith solidarity, nonviolent direct action, and prayerful courage for those defending vulnerable communities and holding power to account. Bonhoeffer’s appeal is a call to all people of faith to not just protest in silence, but put themselves at real risk in the cause of defending the teachings of their faith. In this 250th anniversary year in the US, and in Minneapolis in particular, people of faith across the US are already taking that brave step.

Prayers and intentions start at 27 minutes 4 seconds.

Suggested Intention Focus for this week

This week, as we contemplate the powerful example of courage and conviction shown by Dietrich Bonhoeffer and the echoes of what is happening in Minnesota today with the rise of extremism in our own time, we suggest holding as our main intention:

I will that I will have the courage to move from comfort to costly discipleship when I am called to oppose injustice.

To mark the United Nations’ 80th anniversary, we trace its origins, major achievements, and reflect upon its vital role in multilateral cooperation. We also note its shortcomings and consider the many challenges it faces at what seems like a critical crossroad in world history. Can the UN stay fit for purpose and hold together as global powers increasingly shift focus to regional influence and finding unilateral solutions to issues like migration, security and health? As UN Secretary-General António Guterres says, despite its need to reform, the UN may never be more needed. As always, we invite listeners to join us in holding intentions and prayers for wise leadership, fairer funding, and renewed global cooperation.

Prayers and intention start at 42 minutes 31 seconds.

Suggested Intention Focus for this week

This week, as we consider the vital role and many challenges the UN faces as it marks its 80-year anniversary, we suggest holding as our main intention:

We will that all global leaders will be moved by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres’ call to “Get serious. Choose people and planet over pain.”

Please join us in holding this.

At a time when ordinary citizens are struggling to know what they can do in response to disturbing events on our doorsteps, such as the explosion of force on the streets of Minneapolis during recent weeks, Ellen talks to Legacy Labyrinth Project Director Chris Katzenmeyer about the power of contemplative activism. Drawing on extensive research and experience, they explain how using the labyrinth for such activism may play a powerful and proven role in having impact that doesn’t require taking to the streets. In this emergency episode, Chris and Ellen explain the background, and suggest simple steps that listeners can take right now to put activism focussed on the deeply moving issues of the day into practice. See below for information about how to join the introductory workshop that Chris and Ellen are hosting online this coming weekend.

Suggested Intention Focus for this week

This week, as we consider the vital role that contemplative activism can make in responding to the urgent crises unfolding in our world, we suggest holding as our main intention:

I am open to receiving the information I need to be a force and take action for the highest good in this world.

Please join us in holding this.

In a week in which Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated, we reflect on whether the principles of nonviolence and strategic approach to protest that he advocated are still relevant for what is happening in our world today, especially focusing on demonstrations in Minneapolis and Iran. We explore what King taught, and consider how we may individually apply his teaching, as well as when we join with others in a collective. As always, we return to see where our intentions and prayers may be most needed, as vitally important demonstrations continue in various parts of the world.

Intention and prayers start at 34 minutes 55 seconds.

Suggested Intention Focus for this week

This week, as we wrestle with the challenge of maintaining peace, compassion and non-divisiveness in protests, and remembering that protesting is often so needed in a violent and volatile world, we suggest holding as our main intention:

We will to remain strong in remembering and putting into practice the principle of non-violence whenever we feel called to protest against injustices in our communities and world.

In this episode, we take a sobering look at the nationwide protests that have now reached every province of Iran, which have been met with a severe government crackdown that has by some reports led to as many as 12,000 citizens already losing their lives. We consider the background, personal stories from protesters, reports of human rights abuses, and international reactions, and highlight where our intentions and prayers may be most needed. We honour the courage and beautiful examples of humanity being shown by so many in such terrifying circumstances. Please join us in our collective prayer and intention holding.

Prayers and intentions start at 22 minutes 30 seconds.

Suggested Intention Focus for this week

This week, as we reflect on the observation of one Iranian that “the people of Iran do not want war…they long for peace…but what can be done when the government refuses to step down and must be removed by external force?”, we suggest holding as our main intention:

We will that the people of Iran will collectively receive wisdom to know how to act in the interest of both their own and their country’s highest good.

Please join us in holding this.

A new year and a new quarter means a new theme for Global Healing Response, and this quarter the focus is presence, and its critical importance in these trying times. We explore what being present really means, why it matters, and suggest some simple tips for staying present and grounded.

Suggested Intention Focus for this week

This week, as we consider the importance of presence for establishing our grounding for the year ahead (the Global Healing Response theme for this year and quarter), we suggest holding as our main intention:

We will that we will receive deep insight into what it means to be present, and through such insight and our lived experience, resolve whenever we become distracted to anchor ourselves in the present.

Please join us in holding this.

Prayers and intentions begin at 32 minutes 7 seconds.

In our annual look back at intentions we've held through the year, we give thanks for the many miracles and remarkable turnarounds seen in government actions, community resilience and Mother Nature's grace in the wake of the varied emergencies, conflicts and social and political challenges that we've highlighted. Join with us in celebrating and giving thanks for a year of answered prayer. Yes, there's much more progress we'd like to see in many areas, and new fires are starting, but there's much to be grateful for, as this heart-warming round-up shows!

Suggested Intention Focus for this week

This week, as we reflect on progress made in many areas that we’ve held intention for over the past year, we suggest holding as our main intention:

We give thanks for the many intentions offered by our listeners that have been answered this year, and will that continued transformative energy will continue to flow to bring blessings for the many we held intention for during the year who are still suffering or who are responding to moments of profound change in their lives.

Please join us in holding this.

This week we turn our attention to one of the most important policy documents of recent years, the U.S. 2025 National Security Strategy, released earlier this month. As the USA approaches its 250th birthday, we unpack the MAGA worldview and its profound implications both for the US and the world, having influence in a wide range of areas, including the most pressing concerns of our times. The Strategy's America‑First, hemispheric focus, and the policy shifts on migration, trade, defence, and climate that have unsettled allies and highlighted what may really be in the minds of not only the power in the White House regarding geopolitics and the world order, but other major powers too. The likely global impacts are profound. As always, we look where our prayers and intentions may be most needed. Note: we do take an editorial approach for this episode, being ready to offer our own takes (though we keep these brief).

Intentions and prayers begin at 31 minutes 15 seconds.

Suggested Intention Focus for this week

This week, as we digest the profound implications of the USA’s newly published National Security Strategy, we suggest holding as our main intention:

We will that, whatever the US believes about the importance of national sovereignty, its leadership, ambassadors and policy makers will be moved to value cooperation with, and remain open to proposals made by, international partners in those areas that require global agreement, including the ever-pressing issues relating to migration, combating crime and climate change.

Please join us in holding this.

Note: The Monroe Doctrine is a longstanding key pillar of U.S. foreign policy, first declared by President James Monroe in 1823 to warn European powers against further colonization or interference in the newly independent nations of the Western Hemisphere. It essentially declares the Americas as being a U.S. sphere of influence and pledges U.S. non-interference in European affairs. The policy evolved to justify U.S. intervention in Latin America with the so-called ‘Roosevelt Corollary,’ asserting U.S. leadership and opposing foreign dominance in the region.

In a brief episode this week, we stand in solidarity and deeply honour the many affected by the horror of the atrocity at Sydney’s Bondi Beach this past weekend, and with all Jewish people who are now suffering abuse, attack or fear of attack simply for being Jewish. We move quickly to offering our prayers and intentions. Please join us in holding space and standing against antisemitic lies and prejudice.

Prayers and intentions begin at 11 minutes 40 seconds.

Suggested Intention Focus for this week

This week, as a terrifying escalation in a global climate of hostility toward Jewish people in the wake of the deadliest mass shooting in Australia in nearly 30 years, we suggest holding as our main intention:

We will that educators, political leaders, social media influencers and respected figures in the public eye will be moved where they are able to use their platforms and influence to challenge the automatic conflation made by some that to be Jewish equates with a declared support for the Israeli government.

Please join us in holding this.
