William Lankston is Managing Director of Timpson Direct, part of the renowned British retail service provider. Timpson is a family business, who since 1865, have been offering shoe repairs, key cutting and watch repairs and can be found on most British high streets. They're also celebrated for their unique approach to employee welfare, offering benefits such as free holiday homes and a focus on hiring ex-offenders. But how do they sustain their positive organisational culture and what can we learn from their approach?
Isabella Echeverri is a former Olympic and World Cup football player; she's captained every team she was part of, and she is convinced that football / soccer has the power to drive huge change.
We first met Isabella at Common Goal's Football for Sustainability Summit during the European Championships in Berlin in 2024, and she joins our podcast to talk about diversity, change and empowerment.
She’s a huge advocate for diversity in sports, that every single little girl should have a role model in sport that she can look up to. Her video challenging the attitude towards professional women footballers led to fundamental change in her home nation of Colombia and she joins this podcast to discuss leadership styles, how to improve diversity in sports, and what is needed to bring systemic change.

Dr Kate Simpson is Director of the Systemcraft Institute and joins our podcast to talk about systems leadership.
The world is facing more challenges than ever before. Climate change, migration, inequality, food security... the list goes on. These are big complex challenges, so big, that they can't possibly have a single owner. They are global and systemic; they need careful thought as their interconnectivity is not to be underestimated. What seems an obvious solution to one challenge, might cause more damage to another - and so what is the answer?
Systems leadership is a complex topic that we’ve recognised as a common thread across recent podcasts on the polycrisis, VUCA, BANI and sustainability. We’re delighted that Kate joined us to explain what systems leadership is and how it can be applied to these complex problems, enabling leaders and organisations to address them and ultimately contribute to a more peaceful, equitable and sustainable world.

Dr Jenn Gandhi attributes the opening scenes of The Silence and the Lambs, synchronised swimming and a sense of adventure for taking her down her career path. Tune in to this episode to hear from the Mental Health and Wellbeing Manager at The Football Association on the power and scope football has to enable positive change, how you can recognise burnout and what are the most important things for a leader to keep in mind to avoid being overwhelmed by physical, cognitive or emotional pressures at work.
Sue Hunt was the Director of Strategic Programmes for the London 2012 Olympic Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. This podcast isn't just for people who are interested in the Olympics, it’s a fascinating ‘behind the scenes’ into what it takes to manage what is often described as the biggest logistical exercise in peacetime. Join us as Sue shares her experiences and strategies from this job of a lifetime.

Jamais Cascio is a futurist. He’s spent the past 20+ years thinking, writing and speaking about what might happen, speculating about possibility and more importantly, the consequences of those possibilities. He created the BANI framework in 2018 and six years later, Impact is the first UK/US based organisation to invite him to speak about it. BANI is a framework for articulating what reality feels like at present. It stands for brittle, anxious, non-linear and incomprehensible.
“BANI was a way for me to articulate my feelings in back in 2018. I had a sense that VUCA was insufficient. That we eat VUCA for breakfast. Basically, it's everywhere. And just like a fish swimming in water doesn't really recognise the water, we’re surrounded by VUCA all the time. It's really hard to distinguish it. And so I thought, let's come up with something different. Brittle, anxious, non-linear and incomprehensible are words that have captured people and have really resonated for audiences around the world.”

VUCA is an acronym first introduced in the early 1990s by the American Military to describe extreme conditions after the Cold War. It stands for Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous and took off in a business context after the 2008 global financial crisis. We published a blog about it then, and over 15 years on, it still makes our ‘most read’ list every year. But is VUCA still relevant today?
As the founder of Gritty People, Kay Woodburn works with executives, athletes and teams from all over the world to make the changes that will help them navigate their VUCA landscapes. In this podcast we explore how VUCA provides meaning to what people are experiencing and how to use the framework in organisations.
“Having the VUCA framework gives an acknowledgement that people are not alone. Businesses are not alone. That this difficult landscape we have to navigate exists for all of us.”
