Craig has been apart of Urban Surf 4 Kids(US4K) since the summer of 2012 where he worked with the founder, Wesley Stewart, on creating a comprehensive Surf Therapy program to support Foster and At-Risk youth who are overcoming PTSD, physical, and emotional trauma.
He is a full-time volunteer staff member at US4K by day and a full-time Federal Agent for Homeland Security by night. Working with the amazing kids and volunteers of this organization has been the most rewarding experience in his life.
Urban Surf 4 Kids (US4K) was created to empower foster and at-risk youth through surf therapy and community service based mentoring programs. It's more than an organization, it's a family, an "Ohana." The support system that they need.
Many of the foster youth in the program had never been in the ocean before despite living near the beach! US4K even takes a group of 15 to Hawaii each year! Most have never even been to an airport let alone on a dream vacation.
Foster children are nearly twice as likely to suffer from PTSD as United States war veterans, according to a study conducted by The Harvard Medical School. The risk of homelessness for teens leaving foster care is extreme, as many as 25% becoming homeless within 18 months of leaving the system. Nearly one-third of boys who lived in foster care will go to jail before they reach age 19; foster girls are more than twice as likely to get pregnant as non-fostered teenagers. Additionally, 50% of all foster children will never receive a high school diploma or GED.
