Welcome to a week of documentary here on IN HER LENS! This short series is an addition to BK Library & New York History Day 2022's "Creating Documentaries & Unearthing Archives" streaming now online.
Daresha Kyi (she/her) is an Emmy-award winning filmmaker who writes, produces, and directs documentary & narrative film and television in Spanish and English. In 2017, she co-directed and co-produced the feature-length documentary, Chavela. In 2018, she directed a short film about transgender rights called Trans In America: Texas Strong for the ACLU that has garnered over 3.2 million YouTube views, screened at SXSW 2019, won two Webby Awards and an Emmy. In this episode, Daresha opens up about her start as an actress and transitioning into the independent film world. She talks about the importance of loving the story you are making, trusting audiences with archival footage, and the impact of film.

Michelle Memran (she/her) is a filmmaker, writer, and visual artist. As a journalist in NYC, she wrote for The New York Times, Newsweek, Vanity Fair, and American Theatre Magazine. Her highly acclaimed debut feature documentary "The Rest I Make Up" is a collaboration with Cuban-American playwright Maria Irene Fornes. In this episode, Michelle talks about the conversations she has with the camera, the element of memory that archives invoke, and her approach to choosing stories.

NYHD is a regional contest for National History Day - a program that provides over half a million students each year the opportunity to excel at historical research, interpretation and creative expression.

In this final episode of the Hundefreund special, host Nadine talks with the film's assistant director and intimacy coordinator Carman Ho.
Carman Ho (any pronouns) is a Canadian filmmaker and photographer based in Berlin, Germany. In this episode, Carman tells Nadine about her past studies in the humanities and how it feeds her work in the storytelling world. She breaks down the timeline of shooting Hundefreund and they talk about what intimacy coordination is, how it functions on set, and why it’s necessary. Carman shares how they formed a way of working with exercises like body-mapping and practices from tai chi and chi gong.
Carman Ho is a filmmaker and photographer from Canada, based in Berlin, Germany. Previously, Carman has worked behind-the-scenes on many projects from shorts, to features, documentaries, music videos, and film festivals- as an assistant director, film operator, gaffer, videographer, editor, and production manager. She received a film degree from the Met Film School in Berlin and a humanities degree from York University in Toronto. Louis is a Berlin-based cinematographer, director, and visual artist. In this episode, Malcolm and Nadine discuss his love for creating images, and his journey to film school. Louis breaks down how he got involved with Hundefreund and met the creative team, and opens up about the on-set dynamics. He shares what equipment was used in the making of the short and what he hopes the film will show the world.

Joan breaks down their love for aesthetics and exploration of different creative endeavors. She opens up about how she got involved with Hundefreund and the recruiting process. Joan talks about their process with a new script and collecting/assembling the set of Hundefreund, and Nadine asks her about what she took away from the process.
