  • 12: Melinda James on Viewfinding and "Oklahoma is Black"

    Melinda James is an Black and Thai cinematographer. Her work encompasses documentaries, narratives, installations, commercials, and music videos. Centering her work on women, QTBIPOC, and underrepresented communities- Melinda recently DP’ed and co-directed, “Oklahoma is Black,” a poetic portrait of Black life in Oklahoma City which was nominated for Best Documentary Short at BlackStar and DC Black film festivals. Melinda was included on a list of “Mind Blowing Cinematographers” by Emmy Rossum & Free The Work and is a member of the International Collective of Female Cinematographers. In this episode, Melinda and Nadine chat about her journey to the filmmaking world through her education in sociology and about the differences between big commercial jobs, music videos, and video installations. We talk about safeguarding energy, in times like these but always, and about her creating of a time capsule. In connection to her work in “Oklahoma is Black,” they talk about the importance of footage and archives on who lived and how.

  • 11: Ruthie Shatz on "Lenox Hill" and "The Garden"

    Kickstarting Season 2 of IN HER LENS with Ruthie Shatz. Born in Israel, Shatz is an award-winning executive producer, director, editor and writer. She is the founder, alongside her partner Adi Barash, of “Yulari Films." Shatz and Barash have made some of today’s most impactful documentaries including their Sundance debut “Garden”, “Diamonds and Rust”, and “The Collaborator and his Family.” They have exploded on the international stage with the astounding 2020 documentary series on Netflix "Lenox Hill." In this episode, Ruthie and Nadine talk about finding her passion for documentary and working/creating with her life partner Adi, about the making of “Garden" and being fully convicted and invested in your subject; they talk about the differences between television and film, between the States and Israel, finding the delicate balance between our human hat and filmmaker hat, the making of Lenox Hill, and capturing an erupting pandemic.

    Nadine is joined this week on IN HER LENS by the fantastic Sarah Adina Smith. After a series of shorts including The Sirens, Sarah directed her features The Midnight Swim and Busters Mal Heart. She directed episodes on HBO’s Room 104, TBS' WRECKED, and LEGION on FX. Sarah directed the first two episodes of Amazon Studios action thriller series Hanna, as well as serving as a co-executive producer on the project. Most recently, she directed the pilot for the Hulu series Looking for Alaska and is currently in post-production for her new film Birds of Paradise. In this episode, Sarah and Nadine talk about her journey through the industry- navigating money, rejection, and inspiration. They talk about the making of her films- the writing of scriptments and ambitious plans on a small budget. Sarah talks about directing episodes, fighting for pilots, and shooting in a pandemic.

  • 08: Denise Ekale Kum on Seasons

    Happy New Year! Welcoming 2021 with a brand-new episode. This week, Nadine chats with self-taught writer and director Denise Ekale Kum. Based in Berlin, Denise is creating a four-part short film series loosely based on the year's seasons. Her shorts Wintersonnewende (Winter Solstice), Natsu no Takaramono (Natsu's Treasure), and Respringendo have screened at various festivals and her fourth and final short is currently in the works. In this episode, Nadine and Denise talk about her journey following her passion for filmmaking. They chat about bringing multiple identities and experiences to the work that you do and Denise shares her biggest learnings from the development of her short films in pre production, on set, and in the edit room. Denise talks in depth about her work with Tyron Ricketts, Panthertainment and their work with Germany’s oldest film production company UFA. In a major move, and one of the first in Germany to do so, the company announced a Diversity and Inclusion Quota; a commitment to representation- on gender, people of color, LGBTIQ+ and disability- both in front and behind the camera.

  • 07: Adinah Dancyger on Sharing the Personal

    This week on IN HER LENS, Adinah Dancyger talks about her journey as a filmmaker. Her short films Chopping Onions, Cheer Up Baby, and Moving have screened at various festivals including Sundance, Berlinale, NYFF, and Slamdance. Raised in New York City, and with a BA from Bard- Adinah has worked with brands like Zara, Gucci, Tory Burch, and companies like Nowness and Dazed. She has shot, directed, and edited music videos for artists like Okay Kaya and Aerial East. In this episode, Adinah and Nadine talk about visual storytelling and the development of her short films. In connection to her 2017 short Cheer Up Baby, they discuss channeling and confronting personal stories in a public form. Adinah talks about the joy of making music videos, creative collaborations, and setting boundaries with commercial work.

    This week Nadine is joined by Leticia de Bortoli. Leticia is a Brazilian writer, director, and cinematographer based in NYC. She is the creator of the LGBTQ+ comedy web series "Queering" - currently streaming on YouTube and holds over 6 million views. With a primarily female cast and fantastic characters- the series has created exceptional buzz. In this episode, we chat about working different hats from cinematography, to writing, to directing, we discuss the making of independent web series in New York City and the creation of “Queering," and we discuss what it means to stand firm as a woman in this field. Additionally, Leticia and I talk about LGBTQ+ cinema today, and her hopes + goals for the future.

  • 05: Jasmijn Schrofer on "Tarikat" and "Death of Darkness"

    Welcome back to IN HER LENS! This week Nadine is joined by Jasmijn Schrofer. Jasmijn is a Dutch/Chinese American documentary filmmaker based in Amsterdam. She was raised in The Hague and in 2015 she graduated from The Nederlandse FilmAcademie with her award winning film "Tarikat"; a short doc about Sufism. "Tarikat" is currently still making it's way around the festival circuit. Today, she is working on her upcoming documentary, "Death of Darkness," about the installation of electricity in Illaut, Northern Kenya. In this episode, we talk about connecting to the essence of a story and the translation from feeling to work- the creation of "Tarikat" and building trust with your subjects, the impact of silence, and we discuss her upcoming film "Death of Darkness."

  • 04: Farida Zahran on "Banat Akher Zaman (Youth)"

    This week, Farida Zahran joins Nadine Reumer on IN HER LENS! Farida is an Egyptian writer/director and a graduate of NYU’s Grad Film Program. Her short film "Banat Akher Zaman" or "Youth" premiered at SXSW 2019 and received an Oscar-qualifying award at Palm Springs International ShortFest. She was selected for the 2019 New York Film Festival Artists Academy. Prior to grad school, Farida worked in development at the Doha Film Institute. She is currently based in Brooklyn, NY and is working on her first feature screenplay as well as a Cairo-set musical short. In this episode, Farida and Nadine talk about her experiences at film school, the international production of her short Youth, about setting boundaries for your own and other people's expectations, and about Arab representation, tokenism and self tokenism, in film and television.
