We couldn’t get to everything we wanted so we invited them back. We’re very proud to have members of the Mississippi Special Education Coalition as our guests today to discuss the education rights for your student and the report the Coalition published. Joining us are Julian Miller from the Southern Poverty Law Center, Cassie Tolliver from Disability Rights Mississippi, and Ayanna Hill from American Civil Liberties of Mississippi.

Anyone 18 years and older who is a registered voter in Mississippi is encouraged to design and submit artwork to be used as the “I Voted” sticker for all 82 counties during the 2026 election cycle. This is through the Secretary of State’s office.

The SPLC has created a guide for parents of children with disabilities titled “Helping Your Child With a Disability Get a Good Education,” including state-specific guidance for parents in Louisiana and Mississippi.

Article: Coalition trains advocates of children with disabilities in Mississippi

The Office of Special Education website is designated to provide important information to families of students with disabilities. Links to a variety of resources are provided related to child developmental milestones and ways to help your child succeed in school. If you are unable to find answers to your questions on their site they suggest you contact their office at 601-359-3498.

On the Mississippi Department of Education’s Office of Special Education website, you can access the Access for All Guide which was developed by the MDE in collaboration with educators across the state to help teachers address issues that impact learners with a wide variety of needs. I would hope that having access to this information might help families better understand the classroom environment.

In Legal Terms has had 3 shows dealing with education this fall – on October 15th we learned about Special needs law and Able accounts. We talked generally about student rights on August 27th. Our most recent laws were passed by our lawmakers. There’s a special election coming up for some folks for new lawmakers. Folks in the Hernando/Southaven/Olive Branch area, folks in the Starkville/Columbus area, and folks in the Hattiesburg area have a Special election primary coming up. But good news! There’s time to get registered to vote so you can participate in electing the folks that make our laws.

You can register to vote at your Circuit Clerk’s office, your Municipal Clerk’s office, when you get your driver’s license at the Department of Public Safety, or through the mail by downloading a voter registration form from the Secretary of State’s website and mailing it to your Circuit Clerk.

Mississippi has scheduled an execution for tomorrow, June 24th. Who is it? How to they propose to do it? What are the options for the prisoner to stop it? We’ll learn with our guests: Krissy C. Nobile, Director of The Mississippi Office of Capital Post-Conviction Counsel, Beth Windham, an attorney with CPCC, and attorney David Voisin.

According to the MS Department of Corrections: Since Mississippi joined the Union in 1817, several forms of execution have been used. Hanging was the first form of execution used until 1940. Then the electric chair was used until 1952. In 1954, the gas chamber was installed at the Mississippi State Penitentiary and used until 1989. After that lethal injection was used.

How many ways can a person be executed in Mississippi?  During the 2017 regular session of the Mississippi Legislature, lawmakers amended the law to allow death sentences to be carried out by lethal injection, nitrogen hypoxia, electrocution, or firing squad.

The recent municipal elections have shown every vote counts. Are you ready for Augusts special primary? Are you a part of a Board of Directors? Do you have a Board that is involved in your life at work, home, or at a volunteer group? Board governance: how does it work? How is it SUPPOSED to work? We’ll learn about this with our guest: Professor Martin Edwards from the University of Mississippi School of Law.

Many charities have boards of directors. If you’re curious about board responsibilities, you might be curious about charities. The MS Secretary of State’s Charities Division is responsible for the registration and regulation of all charitable organizations and fund-raisers who solicit contributions in Mississippi. The division is also responsible for the investigation of charity complaints and/or violations to the State’s charitable laws.

We’ve got some news you’ll want to know if you drive OUTSIDE of the state of Mississippi. In 30 states, including Alabama and Tennessee, as of June 5, 2025 a new law takes effect to ban all handheld device use while driving. This includes calls, emails, texts, or using the internet.  Devices cannot be accessed even at a stop light or traffic jam. It’s called the Touch Law. 

What a wild election process last week – and it is still not over!

• Municipal Clerks’ Offices must be in actual receipt by 5pm today of absentee ballots returned by mail for ballots to be timely. Ballots returned by mail must be postmarked on or before Election Day.
• Today also: Last day voters who cast an affidavit ballot by reason of voter photo ID may present an acceptable form of photo ID or complete an affidavit of religious objection in the Municipal Clerks’ Offices.
• Friday the13th Municipal Election Commissioners shall certify the General Election Results and forward certified results to the MSOS.

By state statute, whenever a race is tied, it shall be decided by a coin toss or a drawing of straws. And toss a coin is what a Rankin County Justice Court Judge had to do when the Pelahatchie Alderman’s ward one race was a tie at 34 votes each.
