  • 022 Five Days with HomePod

Dave took one for the team and got himself a HomePod, so we dig deep and discuss why it should or should not be your personal assistant. We discuss apps for managing podcasts, third-party keyboards, spam caller blocking, and camera tweaks. We also cover apps that repurpose your devices in fun ways. Dave concludes that HomePod is great for those who live fairly exclusively in the Apple ecosystem. If you are an Apple user with a discerning taste for sound, and this will be your first speaker, then go for it! The sound is amazing and the internal microphone recognition is uncontested. Unfortunately, there were more downsides than value for Dave to keep the HomePod. It could not compete with other devices that already suit Dave's personal assistant needs. There is no Spotify or SiriusXM — it's Apple Music all the way and will likely remain that way. You can't make phone calls or manage your calendar from HomePod. As Melissa points out, it really doesn't seem like it's a family-friendly product at this time as there are no distinguished voices. While it may currently disappoint on features, the hardware is impeccably crafted giving it great potential to be more than just another assistant in a can. We think HomePod can only get better and we look forward to future iterations.

Melissa discusses her recent presentation at her local Mac Users' Group on the topic of podcatchers. We will keep evaluating these apps for you, our dear listeners, and report our observations so you can make informed choices.

Current Software Versions: iOS 11.2.5, watchOS 4.2.2, tvOS 11.2.5 for 4th Gen and later, macOS 10.13.3; Apple TV 3rd Gen is current at 7.2.2. It looks like Apple is still supporting this model somewhat because they pushed the Amazon video app to it.

Virtual Assistants: we can learn to use them better by practicing skills with some tools you may already have:

    • Apple TV: practice using the voice search to watch TV

    • Set up iTunes and Home Sharing so you can use the iTunes Remote app to control sound in your home from different devices. This should hold you over until a Home Pod makes more sense in your home. Other devices that have the iTunes Remote app installed can control audio playback. You can stream audio to different speakers throughout your home when connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
    • Practice and learn spoken commands for using Siri — click the link or just say "Hey Siri, help." and a list will be presented on your screen with topics

AirPlay - what is it and how do you use it?

Use AirPlay or Screen Mirroring on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch — Apple

Get help with AirPlay and AirPlay Mirroring on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch — Apple

The Apple TV Remote app can be used to control one or more Apple TVs when both the devices and Apple TVs are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Multiple people in the same home and on the same network can control the Apple TV from their device. (You can set it to be locked with a code so that a local prankster can't hijack the screen.)

Tips: Mirror your iPhone or iPad screen to your Apple TV to:

    • share photos you took at an event with the family

    • project online course material for a group Phonewise is a course Melissa and her family are currently taking. She shares her iPad screen to her Apple TV so the whole family can watch the videos and engage with the course content.

    • use an app like Paper or My blackboard for sketching out your ideas for all to see

Use and customize Control Center on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch — Apple

Put a shortcut to the Apple TV remote on your iPhone in the Control Center: Settings > Control Center > Customize Controls > tap the + sign to add Apple TV Remote. (Note: this does not work for Apple TVs prior to the 4th Generation. For older Apple TVs you must still use the app.)

Use Guided Access to lock the user into a single app or for using an iOS device in a kiosk to perform a specific task.

Melissa uses Guided Access as a parenting tool for her young children. She likes the ReColor app as a go-to.

Melissa is loving her new iPhone 8 Plus and Portrait Mode in the new camera.

Dave covers High Efficiency Image Format (HEIF)

HEIF is the new image compression technique used by Apple in iOS 11 to reduce the size of photos you capture on your iPhone in a move to conserve storage space. Suppose you have a JPG photo with a 5 MB file size, it will be reduced to 2.6 – 3 MB, as a result of HEIF compression. With this technique, there's no sacrifice on image quality at all, and that's probably why Apple decided to implement this in the latest iOS version.

Melissa shares her experience and some considerations to be aware of with iCloud Family Sharing.

  • 018 Adventures in iCloud

It's been pretty smooth sailing for Dave and his iPhone X, but Melissa went on a fishing expedition with the whole family in iCloud and reeled in a Black Friday deal or two. Notch or no notch, Apple has kept us all very busy applying software patches and spackle across their product line. Lots of growing pains are being smoothed over, so don't hesitate to apply the latest updates for iOS 11.2, watchOS 4.2, and tvOS 11.2, as well as several macOS updates. If you are curious about getting your whole family connected with iCloud this holiday season, have a listen to this deep dive for some ideas on what's possible before you attempt to connect accounts or migrate data. Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals of note were BestBuy's 2017 iPad sale and Amazon's digital $100.00 iTunes Gift Card deal. Keep checking your local listings because this is the time of year for those kinds of sales. iTunes Gift Card deals are the best way to reduce your costs on iCloud Storage Plans when you buy it at the yearly price in the form of iTunes credit. Apple will first charge your iTunes Gift Card credit before it charges your credit card on file, so keep it topped up and save with these annual sales.

Melissa's new 2017 iPad was instrumental in helping to get iCloud Family Sharing set up because it runs iOS 11 which is required for administering a Family Sharing account. Some might view all she went through as a total nightmare, but she sees it as an opportunity to dissect how it all works and what might suit the needs of others.

Apple has a handy Apple Support app where you can get help from the comfort of your couch. They can run a remote diagnostic on your device and advise you on what steps to take in troubleshooting. Melissa recommends taking screenshots along the way to document the information.

Living in iOS 11 and watchOS 4: ways to get the latest upgrade and updates on to your device, what we like about it, hiccups to be aware of, what's in store for the future? Visiting new Apple Stores, err, Town Squares and Plazas and customer service experiences. Tips for using your devices in the event of an emergency. All this and more, available in our full show notes at InTouchwithiOS.com Dave shares his experiences with Apple Watch repair and iPhone replacement. He has recently visited some of the newly renovated Apple retail spaces. We still need to get used to calling them Town Squares or Plazas.

Here is a demo Dave made that shows Qi wireless charging in action.

Dave has been running the betas and Melissa has mixed thoughts on using iMazing for both iOS 11.0.1 and 11.0.2 upgrade and update. Changes of note in watchOS: easier-on-the eyes passcode entry screen; Silent Mode takes an extra swipe to get to. iPhone battery drain is pretty bad on iPhone 6s, but it will hopefully get better soon. 3D Touch App Switcher is missing, but Craig says it's coming back.

Listen to considerations, trade-offs, and thoughts on the future of the iPhone user experience as Dave and Melissa discuss the September 12 "Apple Event." Full show notes are at InTouchwithiOS.com

    Apple Event Breakdown

    • The Apple Event was on Tuesday, September 12, 2017. You can watch it here.
    • Steve Jobs Theater & Apple Campus access were announced and a virtual tour was shown.
    • Apple Retail no longer calls their spaces "stores" but instead they will now be referred to as Town Squares & Plazas.
    • Apple Watch Series 3 with cellular was announced. Heart health is a major area of focus, specifically atrial fibrillation ("afib") for the future of watchOS. Here is a link to the heart study.
    • Apple TV 4K was announced and pricing for the prior models has dropped. It promotes stunning HDR display for the visually astute.
    • New iPhones announced: iPhone 8 & iPhone 8 Plus to join the existing lineup.
    • We discuss Face ID in an overview addressing popular concerns. We recommend listening to John Gruber's "200: Episode Cc', with Special Guest Craig Federighi"

B&H Photo is a good place to order online because they do not charge sales tax or shipping

Be sure to consider protecting your investment by reviewing warranty and insurance plans. Look at your carrier's offering and compare the features and cost to AppleCare or SquareTrade. Some carrier plans cover theft while others only cover specific types of damage.

Is it a trade-off or a true disadvantage?

    • Face ID vs Touch ID — you can unlock your iPhone more discreetly with Touch ID vs Face ID. How often is this a need to the point where it becomes a disadvantage for you?
