Welcome back to the podcast! This podcast is going to be a bit of a departure, as these things are just my thoughts and opinions about what might happen in the coming year. We will look at 2018 through the lens of an Inclusive Activist.

As far as the podcast goes this is something a bit new. I am looking at some themes and ideas that came together in 2017 and last year I felt I was ahead of the curve in talking about the need for self care in 2017. Good to be with you on the podcast for today. Our topic for today is to push our own personal leadership to get a bit better ourselves. Michelle seemed to notice a pattern with the podcast topics and downloads. The podcasts which were about topics which were about ourselves – which were about getting better as a person seemed to have the most downloads. And I wonder is this the case?

With this podcast I will need to project a bit inot the future with what I see may happen in the near future. Since I focused on writing two podcasts this weekend to record two next weekend. So looking into the future a bit. I had an interesting conversation about a potential Ad sponsor on the podcast which was cool. I will have been a part of a panel interview as a moderator for, More than a Word at ASU West. This will have been a true watershed moment for me as this will be my first time sharing space with one of my Native heroes Amanda Blackhorse. She was a major focus of the documentary More than a Word which focuses on the negative effects of Mascots Stereotypes on Native people. One of my highlights was Amanda Peltier and Amanda Blackhorse shared my event on Facebook! How cool!

This week I will have done the screening of More than a Word

I will have given my first persuasive speech on why participants should be in DI.

I am now a graduate of Valley Leadership Advance – hooray for me!

Other than that this is a planned break time for me – I had been running pretty hot and heavy the past few weeks and resting is a part of positive activism

Self Care: This is a projection

Lift X5 a week which – is really needed this will be my first 5 day week in a long time

Got 3X cardio one will be a lifting session, another will be a hike or outdoor speed work, and the last I am hoping will be a friends crossfit gym

And Meditated for 4X for at least 10-15 mins didn’t do much this week due to the holiday weekend

I will get a lot of sleep over this Thanksgiving weekend which is positive

And started some training with the dogs this weekend which is needed because they need some stability.

First thing: The whole idea of woke is a problem for me. I think it is because it seems like a status one can achieve and hold without effort. I am certainly not woke – I understand some things but still when confronted with a bold new prospect – akin to the black men should if you love and care about the true future of black men might need to happen segregated. That thought shocked me – and sadly my first thought was a me based concern. I was thinking about how much I would miss them in my space – BUT the truly more woke thought would be I

First thing: So first how did we get here. Trump really played the working class white people in this country – and to me working class does NOT mean poor – it does not mean middle class, it means basically anyone below the 80% that would mean anyone making $500,000 and below. If you make below that amount these were the groups specifically targeted by Trump in his bid to get elected in the 2016 presidential campaign.

The targeting of working class whiteness was intentional and specific. There is no doubt the world is changing and changing pretty fast right now. Before it was a

But I did get to sleep in and rest for awhile unexpectedly which was good

And did some arts and crafts for Dia De Los Muertos which was fun – although still undone

So on to the podcast for today! On Fandom and how they do the damage – and how we buy into them, and what we can do to widen our out-group connections…

First thing: Why do I think there is a scarcity of fandom.

I think it is a bit cultural right now, I think it is part of parents getting a sense of their identity as being do it all parents which has put a hyper focus on children and their developments and achievement which has made a culture of being very self-interested. Parents blog about the experience of being a parent and then measure themselves on their successes by the achievements – or secretly deficiencies of their children.

I also feel that social media rewards me centered self-sharing. With Insta’s hearts, with Facebook likes, and silly metrics like snap streaks – (side rant – don’t get it just days texted in a row – does this really mean you have a deep connection) is it public evidence of the depth of a friendship? I don’t understand it myself.

I see these things combining as a major part of our just look good culture. The focus is on looking like you have it all together – NOT on being a good or whole

Teaser: Is it really true that somehow we are biogenetically hardwired to not feel a sense of care and empathy for those different than us. Am I as an inclusive activist even subject to this threat? How can I be inclusive if I am hard wired to not care about the pain of others?

Welcome back to the podcast! The last two weeks have been really fantastic and I am very appreciative of the time I have had to spend some quality time the last few weekends with friend and family

Its been 4 meeting since I have joined the opportunity Valley Leadership Advance – it is for people who do leadership in AZ but are not yet considered pillars in the community – its been ok

I’m scheduled to get ready for my service event with VLA on 11/18 with Habitat for Humanity which should be interesting since I have never done service with that organization

Did service last night with howl-o-ween – it’s a fund-raising event with the Phx Zoo which I know causes some problematics but it overall is a good if imperfect event which does help conservation efforts across the globe and it provides a safe place for Halloween activities too

I’ll be looking doing a lot more service over Nov which will do a lot to help me cultivate gratitude and I really want to make Nov a month of appreciation.

Self Care:

Lift X4 times a week which was good but one short of my goal however I am needing to heal a nagging injury

Got 3X Cardio done this week which is very cool

And Meditated for 3X for at least 10-15 mins as well

Won my first flag football playoff game this morning which means a lot to me

Had a friend Luke Black over last week and it had been a while we are very good for each other to keep me active and keep him balanced and as joyful as we can manage!

First thing: We all are immigrants to America, even natives however we did walk here first. But that is immigrating. With that said in Western Society we talk like the white Europeans were the first to get here. When people have to migrate they don’t do so because life if awesome or amazing. No one moves because life is awesome they move because the need the opportunity for a better life.

I went to a new leadership opportunity Valley Leadership Advance – it is for people who do leadership in AZ but are not yet considered pillars in the community

Got to meet about 50 professionals in the valley and that was great

Was unable to be at the protest on Tuesday when President Trump was downtown here in Phoenix but we did by some Gatorade and Granola bars for those in attendance which IS a form of activism!

I however MISSED the rally for solidarity this past Sunday evening – we had a birthday party scheduled for my partners father and that was great but it was also hard to miss this one.

Self Care:

Lift X5 times a week so far so good

Got 3X Cardio done this week which is very cool

And Meditated for 4X for at least 10-15 mins as well

And I hope by now we have decorated for in the house for Halloween which is a biggie in the household

So on to the podcast for today! In Groups and Out Groups and how they do the damage – and how we buy into them, and what we can do to widen our out-group connections…

First thing: First what are in-groups and why do we defer to then so strongly? Well honestly it starts in the womb scientists have noted we have a strong preference for people who have the same accent as we do. Yes we start to identify with our clan, group or family even that early. There is even some evidence that we are hard wired to only identify with up to 50 to 150 people, see we are wired to defer to a tribal type connection. Which is a major issue for us in a global society.

Eric and I have been friends for a long time and we talk about our dreams to be leaders of men and women years ago while working with my parents. We are both people who really could have chosen to lead in much more negative ways as we have the capacity to be more of cult leaders.

But Eric in helping people meet their fitness, dietary, but more so life and dream goals. Eric is one of the more inspirational and motivational people I have ever met, and he is one of my best and most cherished friends.
