Teaser: The things that really gets me. Is I, is Rowdy – Mr. Divergent thinking. Have been primed over and over again to think – to take for granted things I saw just as a “given” were about me performing a form of Christian Imperialism both on myself and others? I thought I had the ability to unthank – until I really saw how well I had been trained to think and see things in a very specific way. I have been deeply affected by Christian Hegemonic Thinking.

This is the last bit of the podcast I am writing and it will make it this part 3 of 4. This has been very eye opening. I have read the book by Paul Kivel and after that book I made the decision to listen to some Buddhist podcasts and practice mindfulness to train my mind for some unthinking. I think that has been successful for me as an individual.

As far as the growth of the podcast the last week has been very slow, I don’t know if that is due to the subject matter and how it is hitting y’all or if I have a mostly Non-Christian and if this is seen as a topic which does not effect you personally. But it was interesting to see last weeks podcast hit around 30 listens and really stall hard was interesting to me. But I know there is something very important to look at and analyze because there are some important things to examine, process, and potentially rid ourselves from to be more inclusive in our approach. Onto Christian Thinking and how we have been effected by Hegemonic Christian Thinking and how it keeps certain patterns repeating over and over again because this is part of our worldview.

Christian-Thinking

 Dualism – the light and dark notions also give us the idea that things are either good or bad, black or white, just or unjust. It has lead up to either or thinking in a world of uncertainty. Even the old Law was an either or of certainty. Jesus broke that form of certainty by adding in the heart of intention of a rule. As he did with the woman who was brought forth to be stoned, the Law said she should be stoned – when Jesus showed that all have sinned and are unworthy.

Hey welcome to the Inclusive Activism Podcast! We are well over 10 podcasts at this point which is amazing. We are also at roughly 50 listens per podcast for everything that is not a brand new topic which is great. The all time lead is still Liberal Elitism, so I plan on doing a podcast about being Woke in the near future. Maybe I will also add a mid-week nugget called Woke Wednesdays in 2018 with just thoughts on topics – who knows?!? Still I am happy with the progress.

But with that I am curious what is working more for you, the 30 min podcasts on specific topics the interviews with people I feel are giants in the community? As it stands now the interviews are a bit lower in listens but also have not been up as long either. So curious to hear you or your thoughts so email me or give me a call, that would be amazing!

To check in I want to share my activism since I last checked in with a podcast! We are all in our process and without being active in the community we passively allow the existence of oppression in our midst.

Since then I have:

Gone to Mesa City Council to advocate for not using private jails for the City of Mesa, sadly the measure passed 4-2

Attended Anytown Staff training as 16 hours of service to prep for what will be around 130 hours of service at the July Anytown

Self Care Regime:

Lifting at least 4X a week

Cardio dipped a bit to 2-3X per week

Mindfulness still at least 2X per week

AND I went on Vacation to see my sister get married so cool!

First! This podcast is going to focus on Christian Hegemony and its intersections with History and its re-writing of history. Now in the last podcast I do feel I was a bit low energy. I think this is because of the face that I do feel some shame with my Christian Identity and all the hurt that has been associated with Christian Hegemony. This is however important work and I do firmly believe understanding this is important work to do and recognize. A real history check is needed to understand and get our arms around the idea that the narrative of history creates and shapes our reality. That story that get reproduced over and over again warps our reality and distorts our sense of value and makes up overvalue Christian notions or ideals and sublimates the value of notions which do not back that narrative.

Teaser: I am a Christian. It informs my worldview and helps me in being a patient and forgiving person because I am aware of the forgiveness of sins both future and past with my acceptance of Jesus. So on to the numbing trap!

This is particularly an insidious problem in that it is very ubiquitous in that it is found everywhere with its presence but shame keeps it from being examined or discussed.

First – what is it? First off again credit where credit is due. This idea comes from Brene Brown and it can be examined in detail in her book: Daring Greatly: How the courage to be vulnerable transforms the way we live, work, parent, and lead. So on to the subject of “numbing”

Numbing refers to anything we do to avoid feelings. I would take it a bit further and elaborate on it and say it’s also anything that keeps us from the present moment. For me this is crucial to examine.

When I say your avoiding right now, being lost in mindlessness you are avoiding your life! Your actual real deal life is happening right now. As you listen to this I would urge you to take a hot second and slow down with me

I share this because all good things start small and fragile. But you can never underestimate the ability for a small group of people to make a large difference in the world. So while this might be the best it gets for the right now, I’m excited to see. It and if your listening now THANK YOU. Presented at a National Conference about the limiting effects of per formatively with Gender roles within our relationships

I have met with and had dinner with more activist who are willing to get arrested for important causes

I have met with other adjunct faculty who wanted to learn how to better engage their own students

I attended a Nonviolence Direct Action Training with some people who again got arrested for a good cause

I’ve held a Civil Conversation Series about the film 13th for 27 folks at Pvcc to analyze the intersection of race and mass incarceration

And spoke at a discussion panel about black men and how to be better allies in general for black men and specifally better allies within the realm of higher education!

ON to the topic of fragility!

Most of the time this is framed as white fragility. But I would posit that this happens with all forms for privileged identity and would be subject to a form of fragility threat.

So first off lets define fragility: Fragility is a state in which even a minimum amount of racial, paternal, class, or other privileged based stress be- comes intolerable, triggering a range of defensive moves. These moves include the outward display of emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt, and behaviors such as argumentation, silence, and leaving the stress-inducing situation.

Dr. Matthew C. Whitaker is the Founder and CEO of the Diamond Strategies, LLC (DSC). He is also an award-winning educator, author, community engagement specialist, motivational speaker, and founder the Center for the Study of Race and Democracy, winner of the 2014 Arizona Diversity Leadership Alliance (DLA) Inclusive Workplace Award, at Arizona State University, where was a professor of history for 15 years.  Most recently he was given DLA’s 2016 Diversity and Inclusion Leader Award.  He is also a co-founder of the Healing Racism Public Dialogue Series, winner of the 2008 National League of Cities Promoting Inclusive Award, and the recipient of ASU’s 2015 Pioneer Award for working to improve African-American life, community and culture, and the City of Phoenix 2006 Martin Luther King, Jr. Living the Dream Award.  His expertise lies in U.S. history, African American history and life, race relations, social movements, cultural competency, equity and inclusion, teaching excellence, and community partnerships.  He has edited three books, including Hurricane Katrina: America’s Unnatural Disaster, and is the author of Race Work: The Rise of Civil Rights in the Urban West.  He is currently completing a memoir entitled The Undisputed Truth: A Revolutionary Journey to Black Manhood.  Dr. Whitaker has consulted, spoken, and lectured throughout the world, including Australia, Canada, China, Czech Republic, England, Ghana, and Ireland.  He has been featured on CNN, NPR, PBS, WVON, KEMET,  and is the co-founder of the newly formed Just Communities Arizona.  He can be followed on Twitter at @Dr_Whitaker and DSC can be followed on Twitter at @dstategiesllc.
