She talks with us about the prosecution of defendants where mental health is an issue including incompetency to stand trial, insanity, mental health specialty courts and the Mental Health Diversion Program.

5:00 pm Sonia Rash won the May 24 runoff election in Ft Bend to win the Democratic candidate for Justice of the Peace for Precinct 3. In doing so she has become the first Zoroastrian to run in a general election for office in the State of Texas and made her community immensely proud. She talks to us about her win and what plans she has for winning the primary in November.

He has found many shortcomings and areas where the cozy relations between the power generators, gas suppliers and ERCOT have led to higher prices for consumers. He joins us from Austin to explain what he has found.

4:20 pm The third act of the Indo American Association Houston’s 2022 season features Rasika Shekar, a singer and flautist who takes center stage at the Wortham Centre on May 22. She was interviewed by our music host, Jyoti Kulkarni.

4:40 pm Milan Rana has created an innovative learning toy for Indian languages, in multiple languages - Punjabi, Telegu, Tamil, Malayalam, Hindi, etc. She joins us to describe how her company LingoDodo has been able to achieve this. She also will talk about retaining heritage language in a foreign country and new understanding about keeping kids engaged in home languages as immigrants.

5:20 pm Former Mayor Annise Parker started the two-post of Houston Poet Laureatte in 2013, with Gwendolyn Zepeda as the first, followed by Robin Davidson, Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton and Leslie Contreras. The fifth PL, Emanuelee Outspoken Bean was announced in April 2021. He joins us today in the studio to explain the post and perform a few of his poems.

After 38 years in Houston, Babji Yalamanchilli and his wife Dr. Devi moved to Amarillo in the Texas Panhandle to be close to their two sons. Not satisfied with being retired, Babji started the non-profit Keep Amarillo Clean because he grew tired of seeing trash everywhere. He has gotten citywide acclaim for his work and even from national media. Babji calls in to talk about his new journey.

4:20 pm The Grand Jury is at the heart of our judicial system but many people are unclear of how it is selected and it’s purpose. Today we will be joined by Harris County Asst District Attorney Patrick Stayton who is the chief of the Grand Jury Division. He will describe how Grand Juries function and what you might expect if you are selected to serve.

5:00 pm She was elected in 2018 at age 28?as the youngest and the first Latina to serve as County Commissioners Judge. Ever since then Judge Lina Hidalgo has made a high profile for herself as a honest, straight forward and compassionate politician who has placed the community’s concerns first. This was borne out exceptionally when she was thrust in a position to handle the COVID pandemic. Judge Hidalgo calls in to talk about her achievements and future goals.

5:30 pm The Hindu Worship Society manages the oldest Hindu temple in the city. It recently held a series of events from January onwards culminating in the founding of the new Shiv Mandir last weekend. Here to discuss the events and what is planned for the future are Nisha Bhatia and Ashima Patel.
