I made a mix, and there’s a disclaimer. Sorry I haven’t been around, I needed some time to get settled. I’ll be back with new Influencas in March. Spencer and I will have new Obnoxious Laughters for you much sooner than that.
Welcome to the beginning of holiday season! To kick things off, we have comedian Jesse Roth (@messyroth) here! We talked about finding your own voice (“I’m Bo Yo”), wanting to find out everything you can about an artist (“The Strokes”), building a project completely from scratch (“Green Light”), and finding the thing that will get you exactly where you need to go (“Get Myself Together”).
Jesse is hosting an open mic with her collective Bitch Party at Pine Box Rock Shop on November 25th! Find her shot-for-shot remake of “Green Light” on Youtube under the title “Side by Side Comparison: Green Light – Lorde (We Tried Our Best)” – I can’t link in the episode description, but it’s truly wonderful and so well-done.
This is part 2 of Rewak’s (@rewakmusic) episode! We talk about making mistakes intentionally and doing things wrong then asking “Why?” (“Jasmine (Demo)”), and the density of Richard James, Max writing his thesis, and what works when nothing is supposed to work (“Rhubarb”). God this episode was so good, I’m so in awe of the extent of Rewak’s musical knowledge, and you guys are in for a treat!
Hi guys! As you can tell, today’s episode is in two parts. Rewak (@rewakmusic) is so knowledgable that I couldn’t fit it in one episode. He’s a DJ, producer, musician, engineer and everything else under the sun. In this episode, we talked about the history of Jersey club music and making music where nothing can be removed (“Swing Dat Shit”), and club music as gay music and honoring that without co-opting it (“RKUBB”). Also we talk about Lil B a lot.
Hello! This week, I had good friend Yotam Tubul (@yotamtubul) on the pod! We talk about how Drake can exist in two worlds (“Hold On We’re Going Home”), college and freedom (“Ars Poetica”), what music you connect with viscerally as a child (“Helplessly Hoping”), and whether or not nostalgia can be trusted (“Ribs”). Yotam is one of my oldest friends and I’m thrilled to have him on here. Catch the 2nd Anniversary show of Runnin’ on Empty with Yotam and Lisa on November 16th! Catch his monthly benefit show Lofty Goals!
Hey guys – this is another edition of Nadav radio. Right now, everything feels like chaos. I made a mix about that.
Hello! I’m sorry for the delay in posting this! But who better to kick things back off than one of my favorite singer-songwriters in New York, Tamara Hansson (@TamaraHansson)! Her new music video for her single “Your Bones” drops October 26th (this Thursday) and we needed to talk about it. Most of this episode talks about vulnerability, but we also laugh a fucking lot. We also talk about Australian musical identity (“You’re The Voice”), why music from high school sounds so good (“The Greatest View”), and Tamara’s belief in connecting with people on a vulnerable and personal level (“Soon We’ll Be Found”). This episode is awesome, and I’m so happy to have had Tamara on.
Hi Influenca-heads! This week’s episode had a TON of laughter because the hilarious improviser, rapper, singer, writer and performer Raquel Castellar (@raquelcarmmm) joins us! We talk about finding the balance between being smooth and being poetic (“Bonita Applebum”), being sweet but standing your ground (“No Problem”), the importance of finding love even when it’s complicated (“Clarity”), and the freedom that comes from pursuing forbidden love, especially after she came out (“Girl Like You”). RAQUEL ALSO FREESTYLES AT THE END AND SHE’S SO GOOD! Check out her sketch group Deadass.TV on YouTube, Facebook, and IG, as well as the Off Top hip-hop improv jam every Saturday!
Hi everyone! This week, writer, improviser, actor, and fun guy Michael Poole comes by. He is a delightful conversationalist, and I loved talking to him. We spoke about finding community in a local punk scene (“Kids On The Boardwalk”), playing Scalia in a show and just getting the crowd hype about it (“Don’t Wanna Fall In Love”), wanting to commit to something as hard as a concert-goer at a show (“Spoiled”), and the importance of your roots (“Sunday Candy”). CATCH NORTH COAST AT “ANYBODY: An Improvised Historical Hip-Hopera” PLAYING AT THE CONNELLY THEATER FROM SEPTEMBER 20TH-23RD! They’re an amazing group and you won’t regret it! Also, I end with a little tribute to Walter Becker of Steely Dan (“Deacon Blues”).
Had a lot going on and haven’t had the chance to do this, so this one is chock full of weird stuff. My intention was to start with a Sesame Street song and end with a Lil B song, but I had to end with Steely Dan today (RIP Walter Becker). My sequencing on this one is cool.
