  • I need a Med-Ink - Dr. John Brosious

Hello Inky Thinkers and welcome to the seventeenth episode of the podcast

This time I am diving into the world of medicine, of more specifically what it is like to work in a medical field and be heavily tattooed (we did this a bit with Matt Davis in Episode 3 as well). Medicine is still one of the fields where people with tattoos can face quite some stigma, especially as they move up the ranks, but what is it actually like?

Well since I am not a Dr. nor am I in medicine, I felt it best to enlist reinforcements, as always.
This time I am joined by the charismatic and very passionate Dr. John Brosious.
John is a surgeon with his own practice in Las Vegas, Nevada, and he has no end of success stories for his career, but it has not been without some worries along the way too.
But for more you will have to enjoy the episode and find out for yourself.

As always, there is love, laughter, deep discussion, and something to learn!

Please enjoy and share with your friends, family, pets, and anyone else into tattoos!

  • Painted People - Matt Lodder

Hello Inky Thinkers and welcome to the sixteenth episode of the podcast

This time I am diving into the annals of history, more specifically tattoo history, to take a look at why it may be of interest and import to know. As well as what it can tell us about tattooed people and tattoo culture.

Of course I am no historian and even as a sociologist, my knowledge on the subject can be lacking at times. So I am pleased and proud to inform you, that I have the honour of having the esteemed tattoo and art historian Dr. Matt Lodder on the podcast!
With Matt´s help, I am sure you will learn a lot and you should definitely check out his podcast (Beneath The Skin), if you develop an interest for tattoo history

As always, there is love, laughter, deep discussion, and something to learn!

Please enjoy and share with your friends, family, pets, and anyone else into tattoos!

  • The Next Generation - Carlie

Hello Inky Thinkers and welcome to the fifteenth episode of the podcast

This time I am diving into a different part of the tattoo world than what I have done before, partially because I am myself, perhaps, part of the now somewhat older generation fo tattoo lovers and people in the tattoo world.
Instead, in this episode we are looking at the younger generation of artists, the next gen (as fellow gamers or tech aficionados might say) and how they and their clientele use social media in a rather innovative way, as well as how the interactions between artists and clients might be changing in a rather positive way.

Of course I am not doing this on my own, as always I am joined by a wonderful guest.
This time, I am joined by the lovely Carlie, who is herself somewhat new in the tattoo industry, with a handful of years under her belt. But do not let her youth and still green status fool you, this young artist is wise beyond her years.
She has also taken the social media world somewhat by storm, and not by doing TikTok crazes or dances.

As always, there is love, laughter, deep discussion, and something to learn!

Please enjoy and share with your friends, family, pets, and anyone else into tattoos!

  • Inking the Spectrum - Paula Castle

Hello Inky Thinkers and welcome to the fourteenth episode of the podcast

Today we are diving into the topic of autism within the world of tattooing. Both what it is like to want tattoos as someone on the spectrum, but also what it is like to be an artist who is themselves on the spectrum (which both my guest and I suspect many more are, than might know it themselves).

Of course I am as always not doing this on my own, and this time around I had the absolute pleasure of interview Paula Castle, a renowned and well liked British tattoo artist, who herself is on the Spectrum. Paula was so awesome on this episode, opening up about her own journey and experiences, both as a tattoo artist and woman in the industry, but also as someone who was (as far too many women are, because of a lack of research) diagnosed late with autism herself.  Together we get into the topic at hand and much more in this episode, and it is quite the journey that I hope you will enjoy with us.

As always, there is love, laughter, deep discussion, and something to learn!

Please enjoy and share with your friends, family, pets, and anyone else into tattoos!

  • Inking the Self 2: Authenticity and Skin - Dr Michael Rees

Hello Inky Thinkers and welcome to the thirteenth episode.
Today we are continuing where we left off 10 episodes ago with Matt the Inked Shrink, at least in a sense. We are once again talking about tattoos and self-identity and continuing the sub-series "Inking the Self" this time with a focus on the work of Michael Rees and his awesome book "Tattooing in Contemporary Society" and namely a theory of Michael´s presented in the book, the so called "quest for authenticity"

Luckily, and as you may already have put together from what is written above, I am as always not doing this on my own. I am joined by Dr. Michael Rees himself, and together us two tattoo loving sociologists, get into a great and thought provoking discussion, about tattoos and what they mean to our sense of self and identity. This is a truly educational one, for those of you curious about the sociology of tattoos, what they mean for our identity/sense of self, as well as how we are perceived by others and how people interact with tattooed people.

There is love, laughter, deep discussion, and something to learn!

Please enjoy and share with your friends, family, pets, and anyone else into tattoos!

    Guest: Dr. Michael Rees

  • From Kawaii to Katanas - Christian aka Nuke Milk

Hello Inky Thinkers and welcome to the twelfth episode of the podcast. This time we dive into the nerdy world of anime, videogame and pop culture tattoos, as well as the realities of what it takes to run niche studios, to be an only anime or pop culture artist and much more.

Of course I am not doing this on my own, as always I have invited on a cool guest, a man that looks the part as much as he walks to walk. The Kratos of the tattoo world, Christian aka Nuke Milk, who owns more than his fair share of anime and pop culture related tattoo enterprises (to use a broad category for the myriad of things he does), from equipment development to the actual tattooing, Nuke has done it all and with his background in marketing, he has quite the insight regarding what it takes to be a niche artist or running a niche tattoo convention etc. There is a lot of wisdom good advice and nerdery to be had in this episode.

As always, there is love, laughter, deep discussion, and something to learn!

Please enjoy and share with your friends, family, pets, and anyone else into tattoos!

  • Beyond the Gate 2 - Oba Jackson

Hello Inky Thinkers and welcome to the eleventh episode of the podcast.
It is time for episode 2 of the sub-series, "Beyond the Gate", this series is all about giving some much-needed attention, to marginalized groups and people, within the tattoo world.
This time, I am once again looking at being black in the tattoo industry, but with the addition of also being queer (more specifically a gay man).

I am of course not doing this on my own, and I have the fortune to be joined by the awesome Oba Jackson, a man who is fiercely proud of both his black and queer/gay identity and culture, as well as his incredible work as an artist and tattoo artist. Together Oba and I dive into some of the stigma and gatekeeping one can still face in the industry, when either being a POC or Queer, or indeed both.
We also discuss some of the positive changes that are occurring currently, as well as what Oba does to pay it forward and make a positive change through his own studio Push Tattoos, and much more.

There is love, laughter, deep discussion, and something to learn!

Please enjoy and share with your friends, family, pets, and anyone else into tattoos!

    Guest: Oba Jackson

  • Beyond the Gate 1 - Loveless Melvin

    Hello Inky Thinkers!

Welcome to the tenth episode of this podcast, this episode is indeed a special one. Not only does it kick off a new sub-series of the podcast called "Beyond the Gate" where we focus on marginalized groups in the tattoo world.
It also kicks off Black History Month on this podcast, happy black history month people.

Of course, I can´t do this alone, for reasons you may not need to be a sociologist to understand (little nerdy joke for you there).
But I am fortunate to have the awesome and insightful Melvin Todd, also known as Loveless Melvin, on the podcast this episode. He shares his own experiences and insights, of being a black tattoo artist in the US. Together we talk about everything, from Melvin´s own journey to becoming a tattoo artist, his own experience mentoring others who want to be tattoo artists, and what it meant to him to experience more black artists on the scene nowadays. We discuss what can be improved, what is going well, and also what some misconceptions are, regarding tattooing skin with more melanin, and much, much more.
Of course, we do not go on this journey of diversity and representation, without having some fun and laughs along the way, despite the gravity and importance of the topic.
Inspired by Melvin´s art there is also the odd comic book, pop-culture and videogame discussion, throughout the interview, but they too are not without relevance to the topic at hand.

There is love, laughter, deep discussion, and something to learn!

Please enjoy and share with your friends, family, pets, and anyone else into tattoos!

  • The Hexagon Man - Martin Dobson

    Hello Inky Thinkers!

Welcome to the Ninth episode of the Inky Thoughts Podcast

In this episode, I have invited Martin Dobson on the Podcast. A man who may be more well known for his tattoo collection, within the tattoo world especially, than anything else.
Many might now even know what his face looks like, but may recognise him for his tattoos, as Martin himself puts it.

Together we talk about what it is to collect tattoos, when can you consider yourself a collector? What makes a tattoo worth getting?
But perhaps most interestingly, we talk about Martin´s style of collecting, which he may or may not have been the first to ever do when he started, and which has since been imitated more than a few times by others, and what this means for Martin and collecting in general.

There is love, laughter, deep discussion, and something to learn!

Please enjoy and share with your friends, family, pets, and anyone else into tattoos!

    Guest: Martin Dobson

Welcome to the Eighth episode of the Inky Thoughts Podcast

In this episode, I take a closer look at what it is like to be a heavily tattooed woman, working a high-profile job in academia, as well as discuss psychology and tattoos.
Of course, I am not doing this on my own, I am joined by the awesome head of psychology at the University of Sunderland, Dr. Becci Owens
She not only loves tattoos, but knows her way around the academic world (in the UK), both regarding research surrounding tattoos (to some extent), as well as what to consider regarding tattoos and working in academia, and it is less prejudiced than you might expect...
