John L. Brooks, III, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Joslin Diabetes Center, talks about how the Joslin Diabetes Center researches, treats patients, and innovates all under one roof. As a 115 year old organization, Mr. Brooks explains how Joslin maintains a start-up mentality and its financial stability even though it is a mission based not-for-profit organization.
A well-known life sciences executive, Brooks assumed the President and Chief Executive Officer responsibilities in March 2011, having previously served as Chairman of the Joslin Board of Trustees. Mr. Brooks co-founded three life sciences companies including Insulet, which offers an insulin-pump system for people with type 1 diabetes. He has been principal of Healthcare Capital Consulting LLC, which advises early-stage life sciences companies, and a founder of Prism VentureWorks, which raised more than $1.25 billion in capital. Brooks has been Chief Executive Officer of Reflectance Medical, which offers technology for non-invasive monitoring of critically ill patients. He was also general manager at Pfizer/Valleylab, where he was responsible for Pfizer&'s Hospital Products Group’s minimally invasive surgery and new medical technologies business. As President/General Manager at Pfizer/Strato, he led the growth of a rapidly evolving vascular access medical device business. A native of Massachusetts, he holds an M.S. in Business and a B.B.A. cum laude from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
