Dr. Marty Makary is a surgical oncologist specializing in minimally-invasive pancreas surgery. At Johns Hopkins he has served as the endowed chair of gastrointestinal surgery, the director of surgical quality and safety and founding director of the Johns Hopkins Center For Surgical Outcomes Research and Clinical Trials. He currently serves as the chief of the Johns Hopkins Center for Islet Transplantation and Executive Director of Improving Wisely, a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation project to lower health care costs in the U.S. by creating measures of appropriateness in health care.
Dr. Makary is the creator of The Surgery Checklist, publishing its first description and subsequently served on the W.H.O. Safe Surgery Saves Lives committee and led the W.H.O. work group to create global measures of surgical quality. He has published over 200 scientific articles and is a leading voice for physicians, writing in The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek and TIME Magazine. Dr. Makary is The New York Times best-selling author of Unaccountable, a book about quality and price transparency in health care.
