Inside Lenz Network

GUEST: Yulil "Yuli" Alonso Garza

Mothers Against Gangs (MAG) is a coalition born out of the tragic killing of Martin Alberto Garza in the Imperial Valley of California. Yuli's first appearance on Shattered Lives Radio was mere months after the tragic gang killing of her son. She so lovingly described her son, her family, and the close knit community that has helped her through.

The MAG Coalition has been very active in fundraising and awareness in the Imperial Valley and beyond. Creating an atmosphere of harmony for troubled youth and their families, they seek to create a safety net for those kids who may fall through the cracks and become involved in gangs. Throughout the year since losing their son Martin, the Garza family and the entire community have united to develop their mission in Martin's memory.

If ever there were one woman who took on advocacy as a champion, it’s Anne Seymour. Shattered Lives is proud and honored to have her as a guest to share her vast knowledge of victim advocacy.

When crime or mass crisis happens, victims are unwillingly thrust into the limelight, adding yet more stress to their most wounded experiences, becoming victimized again. What resources are available to protect and shield victims from approaching media who are often inappropriate? How can the public change it’s appetite for instant access?

Anne Seymour will speak to the listeners about her experience with crisis response in Edmund, Oklahoma and Columbine, and how these mass tragedies are continuing to occur. What can we do about it? Anne Seymour will give fact based solutions. She will discuss how media is helping or hurting when crises happen and how social media has changed the landscape of where and how we get our facts, along with mis-information.

Guest: David LaBahn, CEO of The Association of Prosecuting Attorneys

Successful prosecutions are yet another step in the justice system that “that reflect a balance of punishment, compassion and concern for victims and community, including for offenders who are not citizens of the United States.”

Keeping the scales of justice balanced puts prosecutors in a unique position, keeping justice in mind and not just “the win” and closure of a case.

By utilizing the resources and programs offered through the Association of Prosecuting Attorneys, prosecutors can better understand their role and assist in creating safer communities free from crime.

The Association of Prosecuting Attorneys (APA) was founded as a national "think tank" to represent all prosecutors and provide additional resources such as training and technical assistance in an effort to develop proactive innovative prosecutorial practices that prevent crime, ensure equal justice and make our communities safer.
