Inside The Program

Join us in The Program this week to unpack the sordid and child abuse laden history of WWASP, or the World Wide Association of Specialty Programs. WWASP was an umbrella organization that ran a plethora of specialty programs throughout the world, but headquartered in Utah. These programs masqueraded as a last ditch resort for parents with unruly teenagers. The schools promised to whip their kids into shape...but instead subjected these children to abuse, neglect, and violated their most basic human rights. These are their stories.

Special guest and WWASP survivor, Haley Hedrick, gives an incredibly personal perspective on how she resisted the programming at the Academy at Ivy Ridge which resulted in her being continuously and violently restrained, she recounts her time in solitary confinement and the mental and emotional aftermath that she still lives with today, 15 years later.

In Episode 6, our anonymous guest recounts his experience of being sent to the WWASP facility Spring Creek Lodge in his early teens. Only 2 months later, he would then be transported to a similar program, the Liahona School….while having a bad trip on acid.

After graduating from this program, he would be sent back yet again, where he would witness the neglect of a student who died while in the care of Liahona.

Valerie Roman shares the incredible story of her fight to survive before, during, and after her stay at the WWASP facility, Spring Creek Lodge. Before ever attending the program, Valerie had suffered abuse at home and she gives us an up-close account of the mental anguish that occurred from being subjected to one abusive environment to the next, at Spring Creek Lodge, and how her journey in healing from these catastrophic events has led her to take her power back and break the trauma cycle by parenting her child with mindfulness, compassion, and intention.

Kristi, a survivor of RedCliff Ascent and the Family Foundation School, shares with us one of the most incredible stories yet. After enduring abuse in the home, and being made to believe that she was a full blown addict after only experimenting with weed, Kristi was sent to a wilderness program, but the 63 days she spent surviving off the land in Utah would not prepare her for the horrors she would experience at the Family Foundation School. After, successfully escaping the program, Kristi ran for her life and would stay in hiding until after she turned 18.
