Her voice mattered. Hevrin Khalaf existed loudly on behalf of all women and fought for women’s rights in Syria. “It was not just Hevrin her killers were targeting, it was everything she stood for as well; the strength, dignity, and equality of women.”

A post-mortem examination showed that the politician was dragged from her car and brutally assaulted before being shot more than 20 times.

Hevrin Khalaf only got to be 34 years old. I find it hard to grasp, the brave life of this woman who only became 34, four years younger than what I am myself at this writing moment. I think to understand her, we must also try to understand the country she was from, Syria, and the time she lived in, and what was before her, that coloured her choices in life.

We hear so much these days about the word privilege, privilege in fortune, white privilege, privileges in terms of gender. I consider myself a woman of great privilege. Not just because I am white, I recognise that is a privilege in itself, but also because of the demographics and geographics I was born into. Hevrin Khalaf was born into the opposite; a part of the world that was opaquely painted with conflict, terror, injustice, war, fear, inequality and a country that was torn by hate and greed within its own people. What makes a young woman fight so hard for injustice and inequality that she sacrifices her life?

Lisen's guest on the podcast this week is Nadine McNeil.

Originally from Jamaica, Nadine worked for many years for global organisations such as Head Logistics Specialist for UNICEF Indonesia and Chief Technical Services at United Nations, Central African Republic before following her calling as an entrepreneur and yoga teacher.

Lastly, Nadine has been residing in Bali for an extended time where she has been working as a yoga teacher at the largest and most recognised yoga studio in South East Asia, The Yoga Barn. Nadine also works as a public speaker, transformational coach for women and as a humanitarian. Her mission involves igniting others to create and dwell in infinite possibility, and share the tenets of yoga within communities where it has been largely inaccessible. 

She presents at international conferences such as the BaliSpirit Festival and the Caribbean Yoga Conference, leads corporate workshops at companies such as the Caribbean’s largest money market brokerage, JMMB, and teaches at yoga studios across the globe. She also implements a variety of programs, classes and workshops for underserved populations, with past projects in the United States, Jamaica, Haiti and Africa, contributing, for example, to organisations such as the Africa Yoga Project.

Nadine teaches an annual workshop retreat at Kripalu, is a director of the Jamaica Yoga Association and a Jade Yoga ambassador. She has written for several publications such as Mantra magazine, Elephant Journal and the Jakarta Post, and has been featured extensively in media around the world, including Television Jamaica, and most recently in Wanderlust’s online publication. 

Lisen and Nadine are working on developing a powerful program together for women which will be both an online offer as well as in-person retreat program to be launched in 2021.

In this first episode of Power of the Women podcast, I talk with Dr. Melati Wibawa, Surgical specialist at the Endrawati Cancer Center at Prima Medika Hospital in Denpasar, Bali. 

Dr. Melati is a woman who have followed her pursuit to heal others with bravery and strength. Few women in Indonesia receives an higher education, because as women you are supposed to get married early, and once married, dedicate all your time and energy to your husband and his family. When Balinese women get married, they move out of their family home and into their husbands family generational home. Within a year, you are expected to get pregnant, otherwise the community will think there is something wrong with you. And getting divorced is highly frowned upon. 

Dr. Melati got married at the age of 29, but after 3 years of marriage, filed for divorce and remarried a few years later. Her first husband demanded her to stop her education to become a housewife. Dr. Melati listened to herself. She knew she was unhappy and that she was destined to do more, to serve and heal others. Her brave heart led her to become one of the few female surgical specialists in Indonesia and she now also dedicate her time to women across the island of Bali who suffer from breast cancer, to support them and encourage them to seek medical help. Many people in Bali, especially in rural areas, believe that when women get breast cancer, it is their bad karma. The women get isolated from their families and community and are afraid to seek medical help. Dr. Melati is an advocate and volunteer for The Bali Pink Ribbon organisation and she devotes not just her expertise, but also her personal support. Many women across the island have survived breast cancer because of her work, and even though just in her early 30's, Dr. Melati is one brave woman that inspires to many others around her because of her gentle, yet powerful energy, mindset and heart. 

YOUR VOICE MATTERS!

Dr. Melati was the doctor who performed my surgery of removing a breast tumor earlier this fall, that is how we met. Her way of treating me as her patient made a challenging experience to something positive. It was one of the pivoting moments in my life, when I was reminded of the powerful effects our attitudes and mindsets have on each other.

I speak with Dr. Melati on the challenges women in Bali face, breast cancer awareness, the need and importance of embracing our feminine powers, and how the power of one woman's mindset can make a shift for others to dare to speak up.
