  • Insights Into Teens: Episode 79 "Back to Remote Schooling"
This week we look at the challenges, concerns and changes to how school will work in the coming weeks amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic. What are schools doing to confront early surges in infections, what infrastructure is in place for remote learning, what impact will remote and hybrid learning solutions have on our children and when can we expect a return to some normalcy. We'll look specifically at what Madison's school is doing. The changing environment, evolving messaging and the recommendations coming down from the Federal Government, CDC and other respected organization. There's a lot of fear, anxiety and uncertainty about the risks of sending our kids back to school under these conditions and we'll talk about all of it this week.

IntroductionsWelcome to Insights Into Teens Episode 79: “Back to Remote Schooling.”I’m your host, Madison Whalen and my co-host, Joseph Whalen.
What will return to school look like during COVID-19https://www.unicef.org/coronavirus/what-will-return-school-during-covid-19-pandemic-lookhttps://uni.cf/3b7aVSI Life during this pandemic has been difficult for parents and children alike. The return to school is a very important step in our journey, but many parents and students have questions concerning this year. Here is some helpful information on that.
When and how school will reopen? We are slowly seeing an increasing number of children going back to school. 105 of a total of 134 countries (78%) have closed schools and have decided on a date to reopen their schools. 59 of those 105 countries have already reopened schools or plan to as of late August, 2020.Given the difficulty of the situation, countries are in different stages regarding how they reopen schools. When deciding whether to reopen schools, authorities should consider the benefits and risks across education, public health and socio-economic factors. The best interest of every child should be at the centre of these decisions, using the best available evidence.
Is it safe for my child to go back to school?Decisions on control measures in school closures and openings should be consistent with decisions on other physical distancing and public health response measures within the community. Generally schools are not opening in countries as an isolated action, but as part of a number of actions related to opening back the country,

When Disney announced their ambitious plans for an EPCOT overhaul, some of which has been scaled back due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they left out Journey Into Imagination With Figment from the discussion. Many fans were holding out hope that a refresh of the ride might come in a later phase of the EPCOT reimagining, but with Disney tightening the purse strings in the coming years as the travel industry rebounds from a global pandemic, any “phase two” or “phase three” EPCOT plans could be years, if not a decade or more into the future. That said, former Imagineer Tony Baxter recently brought up the idea of a Journey Into Imagination With Figment redo.Speaking at a TEA@USC event the other night (YouTube video since deleted), Baxter broached the subject of a Journey Into Imagination With Figment refresh saying, “I just wish we would do the ride over. I would come back out of retirement to do that ride over”.

This week we're talking about the various things that Madison did this summer in quarantine. COVID-19 has seen the normal summer vacation time period turned on it's head. With a summer filled with stay at home days it's proven challenging to keep Madison occupied and entertained. Without the usual weekend trips, vacations and outdoor activities to draw on we had to get creative with different projects, virtual camps and other things to keep her challenged, engaged and motivated. We'll discuss all of the things we've done to accomplish exactly that in this weeks episode.

  • Insights Into Tomorrow: Episode 8 "Voter Suppression"
We explore the controversial topic of voter suppression in this episode. We'll take a look at the various forms of voter suppression dating back to the founding of our country up until the present time. We'll investigate the various laws that on the surface were portrayed as a method of preserving the integrity of our voting system but in reality were tied to the ever present but rarely proven fear of voter fraud. We dive deep into the current voter suppression techniques employed today that are designed to manipulate, inconvenience and disenfranchise a large portion of the voting public. We'll discuss the corrupt, racist and anti-democratic motivations for such schemes and how they are eroding our political system. Finally we'll look to the future of voter suppression and the impact it will have on our country as a whole. All in an attempt to educate the voting public. Because if there's one thing politicians fear it's an informed, educated and motivate block of voters who are immune to the tried and true manipulative techniques that all politicians employ to gain themselves political office.

The videos gives the alternative titles and their reasoning and will leave you wondering if perhaps there wasn't a larger theme at play with the naming of the movies.Entertainment news this week is all about Disney's latest live action remake Mulan. In an unexpected change of policy speculated on in the podcast a few weeks ago Disney will be streaming the movie on Disney+ but with a catch. While that news was a welcome change of heart to most of us, one theater operator in France didn't take the news so well. We have that story and his reaction this week as well. We'll finish this week up with a bit of a reversal of roles in our Insightful Picks of the Week, with Michelle highlighting a documentary and Joe a surprising non-documentary pick this week.

But granting too much freedom is just as bad as giving too little.  Five Facts about Teenage Personal Freedomhttp://www.imom.com/the-five-facts-of-teenage-freedom/https://bit.ly/2DpU1BSFact #1: Freedom wields a greater influence than parents or peers.Over the years, many studies (and parents!) have asked whether parents or peers exert a bigger influence over kids’ behavior. Research suggests this question misses the main point. When freedom is added to the mix, it seems to far outstrip the influence of any person. Look at the astounding survey results.  Question: When you do something that your parents would disapprove of, what is the best description for the reason that you do it?
